Self expression. I'm a football fan first and United second (as should everyone).

It's the only sport that every game you can watch something different over the course of 90 minutes.

Originally it meant belonging, with the club, the team and the fans. It meant joy when we won and grief when we lost.

As I've got older it means pain. The realisation came when United were, from memory, 6-0 up against Roma (in UCL) with 30 minutes left. I was in metaphorical agony, dreading a Roma comeback. When De Rossi scored, I experienced actual pain and I knew I was taking it all far too seriously. Still love it though.
