Call the CC company explain the situation and dispute the charge. CC company will very likely reverse the charge. Behind the scenes, they will reverse the charge from the attendant and penalize/cancel/investigate the attendant if they want.

its likely that this isn't the first time, either.

Bar supervisor here. This is the correct answer.

If it's through Bank of America, you don't even need to call. Log into your credit card account, expand the transaction by clicking the little arrow button, and at the bottom of the expanded box will be a "dispute this transaction" link.

yes call your bank and dispute it.

also call the owner/manager of the establishment and make sure they know their employees are scum bags

I haven't lived anywhere that I'd encounter bathroom attendants in years, but aren't they employed by the establishment where the bathroom is located? I'd want to talk to them and the attendant first. That said, it seems odd that he would take a cc on what I imagine is a personal square account. In my experience, tips earned have to be reported for tax purposes.

Just curious, it seems strange to me.

I think some are employed by the establishment.

And some actually pay the establishment for permission to be in there. And then all of the fancy soap and towels and lotions are provided by the attendant. Kind of like "renting a chair" as a hair stylist in a busy salon.

We had them back in the day. We didn't pay them nor did they pay us. They just kept the bathroom cleaned. The guy that owned the bathroom cleaning business would get paid by taking half their tips. He would provide all their supplies for them. He had like 6 locations at different clubs in the area.

Bathroom cleaning or bathroom attending?

I thought bathroom attendants just stood there and handed you soap/towel/mints/etc... I didn't think they actually cleaned the bathroom itself.

in some places it's one and the same. It evolved from a guy literally taking care of the bathrooms. A nice clean bathroom was considered valuable enough to warrant tips.

Over time it's become "let me hand you a towel and then hold out my hand for a tip"

Pretty sure 92% of the time they just attend, but then 5 minutes every hour they make sure there aren't paper towels on the floor or whatever.

I encountered a bathroom attendant at a dingy music venue once. He was definitely there to make sure there wasn't any shady stuff happening in the restrooms.

bathroom butlers are typically the shadiest people in the bathroom

In thailand, the attendant will give you a massage while you use the urinal. Not just shoulders either. They will crack your back, neck, and ears too.

Ours did . That was essentially their payment for using our club. And if you have ever been in the business you know how bad the bathrooms are at the end of the night. The guy that ran the attendants also owned a janitorial service so it fit in well with his other business.

Honestly I see them at the dirtiest shadiest bars near me, where the bathrooms have fucking decals and writing over every stall. They don't clean shit around here...

I swear, some of them just walk in and don't really even seem like they should be there. I've seen some shady guy just roll into a pub with his carry on roller and set up shop. He popped his tip bowl down and started shooting soap into people's hands.

I really really hate it. I just want to pee and wash my hands. I don't need any help.

It really is one of the most awkward transactions going.

You're only expected to tip if you use any of their products. Just getting soap and a towel is a free service. Don't feel bad about that.

[–]Keepem [

They never asked for a tip the first few times, so I thought the stuff was from the establishment and free. I would help myself. I eventually saw someone give a tip though. I felt awkward going to the bathroom after that.

Soap is automatically dispensed and so are towels. I really don't see why he needs to help me with that... Guy is literally waiving his hands in front of the auto dispenser to hand people towels...

And I don't get "tipping" for using their products. Isn't that just a purchase?

Ah. That makes more sense then.

I tip pretty well but will never tip someone to take a piss. This practice is the tackiest dogshit I've ever seen and I feel precisely 0% guilty about not participating.

Absolutely let the restaurant know that this happened so maybe they'll keep the panhandlers outside.

Arguably, the attendant was taking the piss...

All the ones I've seen have a wide array of nice colognes that you can use, but then it's pretty strongly implied that you'll be "tipping them". That's the only time I'd tip one

Yep. I only tip if I use something they brought in themselves.

[–]WHOLE_LOTTA_WAMPUM [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

It depends, if the guy is willing to step up and aim it for me, I'd probably give him some change.

But most bathroom assistants nowadays and too fucking lazy to even play with your balls, let alone fully fondle my fiddle.

I wear the freshest clothes, eat at the chillest restaurants and hang out with the hottest guys, so I always tip people.

Dude, having nasty piss puddles all over the bathroom seat and a countertop covered in soap drippings and water splashes is gross. If there's a bathroom attendant taking the time to actually clean up and keep the bathroom impeccable after every use, I think they deserve a tip.

They are there mainly to keep the bathroom clean and make sure nothing shady is going on. I would never tip them if I just took a piss and washed my hands, however they usually have gum/mints/cologne and occasionally I'll grab some mints or a pack of gum and throw a buck in the basket.

I used my cc to give a $2 tip to a bathroom attendant

You did what now? Jesus Christ

The bathroom attendant took visa? Man, this world is getting outrageous.

Call visa, dispute it, they'll fix it.

They'll also revoke his account if it happens more than a couple of times.

Call visa

You meant call the card issuer (BOA). No offense but can't believe this is top comment.

I tried calling visa and they didnt answer

I mean call whatever number is on the back of your card.

I believe it depends on the bank. I deal directly with my bank with any card issues. My girlfriend however deals with visa when she has issues.

Call the number on the back of the card.

A couple days ago a bum asked me if I had a card when I told him I didn't carry cash.

Don't tell them you don't carry cash. Tell them I'm not giving you money. They can't dispute that.

I was waiting for a ferry one day and a homeless person asked me for food. I am a complete sucker for this, given that we used to have to go to the food bank when I was growing up. It's also where I volunteered for a while. I happened to have one of those half cans of Pringles in my backpack and offered it to the lady. She said she just wanted cash so she could go get McDonald's. That's not how this works, lady.

Yeah, that was the next phrase out of my mouth. I'll volunteer money and time for organizations I think do a good job, but I'll never hand out money on the street.

I'll volunteer money and time for organizations I think do a good job

No offence to you, but 99% of people who say this volunteer neither time nor money to any charities.

People should just admit they don't give to charity and get on with their lives.

Back in college (2008ish) when square was pretty new, I got tricked by a guy slanging $5 bibles in front of the library in the middle of campus. Classic "but, if you had cash you would donate right?" line, and of course I said I would, then he busted out his little card reader. Straight up got me.

"I was lying. Have a nice day."

I feel ya man. I was the same way. Stopped caring and those situations have been way easier ever since.

Yes, but that's when you say "Sorry, I won't use my credit card anywhere that there isn't a valid SSL certificate."

Which is why you should ignore them entirely. No eye contact, no acknowledgement that they're even there.

I generally do. They weren't in a place I'd expect homeless people and I got caught off guard.

Seriously. Next thing you know the guy will be taking AMEX.

That's a scummy thing to do. As other users said, file a dispute with your credit card company, and simultaneously you might want to send a note to the bathroom attendant's company. Chances are if he's doing this to you, he's done it to others.

i try to never use the bathroom attendant if i can help it. the bathroom is the last place i want to have an interaction or transaction and ive been able to successfully do all that's needed in a bathroom without assistance for years. it doesnt make a bathroom classy, it makes it a pain. so i try to avoid the service (and therefore the tip) at all costs. i certainly wouldnt use my card for it. cash or "sorry, no cash"

Man do people need to be more careful with their credit/debit cards.

You're going to hand a bathroom attendant your credit card, and then walk away without confirming the transaction has finished?

"Do I need to sign anything with my finger"

"Nah you're good, we're all done"

"Okay could I see the screen to just make sure?"

I guess I'm less inherently trusting than the average person, but handing my CC to a bathroom attendant for a tip seems just.. absurd.

[–]_ALLLLRIGHTY_THEN 8ポイント9ポイント  (7子コメント)

People tip bathroom attendants? TIL

As soon as I walk into a bathroom that has an attendant, I instantly decide never to return to that establishment.

Same thing goes for grocery stores that have a new charity table setup outside their store every time I go there. I just want to buy groceries. I don't want to be harassed for change. I've never fucking heard of your charity and I don't just give money away to charities I've never heard of before.

Grocery store charities are scams too. They vacuum money via bloated "administrative costs"

You arent being forced to pay anything to them. If you are going to avoid a place because you cant ignore a charity table or attendant in a bathroom then you probably have a bit of a stick up your ass.

I don't frequent shady clubs and walmarts. If that's having a stick up your ass, then sign me up.

If you use their products, you are supposed to. You don't have to use their products though.

It gets awkward when their "product" includes the only soap and paper towels in the bathroom, however. I mean. I'll still stiff him, but I'll don't feel great about it.

Call the credit card company. They'll dispute your charge, put the money right back into your account until it's settled and then get back to you telling you it's fine. I do this all the time something sketchy happens on one of my cards

A bit of insider knowledge regarding credit card disputes... every financial institution has a "not worth the time" monetary amount that they will just discharge instead of going through a dispute process which can go on for months. There is a lot of back and forth involving disputes between cardholder, bank, and merchant, and for small amounts the financial institution just eats it. In my analysis I calculated that to be $112.43 considering the cost of my loss prevention employees, the time it takes, the opportunity costs, etc. So as a blanket practice I instructed the staff to just eat it if it's under 112 and move on. In some cases, even if it was over $112 I'd eat it anyway because I just knew it was going to be a PITA.

Your amount is so low that your bank/issuer will just eat that amount, I'm sure.

What is a bathroom attendant? I've actually never heard of this

When you go to a restroom at a restaurant or whatever, there's a guy who stands by the sink and hands you paper towels/a towel to dry your hands with and then gives you a spritz of cologne if you want.

First off - use a credit card not a debit card. Due to how the law is written your protection is much greater when you use a credit card.

I would first dispute the transaction with square. If that does not result in an outcome to your satisfaction or it gets close to 30 days from the charge I would dispute the transaction with your card issuer.

Not just how the law is written, but also the logistics. With a debit card it's your money. With a credit card it's the bank's money. Guess which of those they're going to try harder to get back?

I did use a credit card.

When the transaction finalized on my bank account

makes it sound otherwise, but good news, with a credit card you have up to 60 days from the first statement with the error to dispute the transaction with the card issuer.

    [–]anyones_ghost27 [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Lots of my credit card charges show up first as "pending" charges, especially at places like gas stations and restaurants. Then a day or two later they show as "finalized."

I have no idea how no one has said this yet, but you most likely got scammed. Anytime someone has a credit card reader in a situation that seems unusual, you should assume you are being scammed. I had a guy come up to me in a park once and talk to me and say he really thought I should read this book he had, and he gave it to me, and then asked if I could make a small donation to his organization to cover the cost, and whipped out a reader, asking for $10. NO!

As pointed out, bathroom attendants are paid by the establishment, and while they are allowed to accept tips, these would be cash tips, usually $1. The fact he had a card reader is a huge red flag. And what is also possible: he wasn't actually a bathroom attendant. He was posing as one, to grab $40 here and there from people. And sure, you'll be able to dispute your charge, because you used a CC. But anyone who used debit? Possibly out of luck. And more likely than not, he cleaned out the account as soon as he could and no one will get their money back.

not sure how to resolve your issue, but LPT always ask the square merchant for a text or email copy of your receipt of purchase.

When I've used Square, they don't usually allow you to leave a tip of more than 100% of the bill. I tried to once when I got free ice cream at an ice cream shop, and the tip field maxed out at 100%.

Anyway, call your credit card. They should be reasonable when you explain it.

Fuck bathroom attendants, fucking artifact from the Swinging 20's where I guess they were commonplace.

Its important to realize that square is made for normal transactions, this was a TIP so what he did was fill out the 2 dollar as the "fee" and then when you walked away he added a number to the tip line..

Go back to where he's at, and then make him give you $882 or you'll call the cops.

Curious about where you live to be honest. I've never seen paying bathrooms in North America, and certainly not places where you can tip the pee lady with a credit card.

After living in the US for 4 years disputing the tips for several times on posted transactions, or a strange amount appearing on a pending transaction because the bank added 20% extra on pending transactions, I really hope the US would adopt the chip and pin ASAP, like Canada.

In Canada, the server enters the amount, then we enter the exact amount / percentage we want to tips on the machine. We know the exact amount we will be paying right before my authorization. No more disputes. The entire process is smoother that I don't need to pick up my calculator

Bathroom attendant with a square card swiper? That just sounds like a bad attempt at scamming. Why would you tip an attendant with a card separate from your restaurant/hotel/etc ?
