Dystopia! Conspiracy! Cyberpunk! Choice!
All the makings of one hell of a classic. All the makings of Deus Ex.
Deus Ex is....well, it's hard to describe Deus Ex. Is it an action game? A stealth game? A dystopian thriller? maybe it's all of those. Maybe it's none of those. At its heart, it's an immersive sim. A cyberpunk adventure like no other packed with an unprecedented level of reactivity, player acknowledgment and detail; complimented by amazing choice based gameplay and profound philosophy.
Deus Ex released in 2000 and took the world by storm, being one of the first games to heavily emphasize player agency over being an observant; pushed along one path. Combined with a slick aesthetic, an amazing soundtrack and self satirical yet intricately profound story line, Deus Ex was an instant sensation.
A sequel was made that shall not be named, and it wasn't until 2011 that the series was under the spotlight once more, with Deus Ex: Human Revolution; a prequel that grasped the fundamentals of what made the original so memorable, implementing them into a modern design philosophy with the same focus on choice and thought provoking storytelling and themes. The result was a successful final product; worthy of the series' prestige.
And it is only natural that such a game series would garner such a big following. Uncovering conspiracies for an impressive seven years now; the Deus Ex sub is home to all kinds of varied content with a healthy mix of humor, discussion and criticism. And what with the release of the series' latest Deus Ex: Mankind Divided [spoilers: its good. really good] there is certainly no shortage of meaningful discussion and activity.
By that of course, I mean 3 minutes of Adam Jensen pulling off the safety dance. But it wouldn't be Deus Ex if the wit wasn't underpinned with meaningful political discussion and some good ol' conspiracy
And now, for a little one-on-one with a part of the sub's Council of Five.
Q1: What can you tell us about yourself and your relationship with the Deus Ex franchise?
enderpanda: I've always been fascinated with dystopian futures and man 's relationship to technology. To me Deus Ex represents one of the best depictions/explorations of those themes.
Q2: Deus Ex is a treasured name in the industry, but the community, compared to some other big franchises isn't actually that big. Why do you think that is?
enderpanda: Possibly because it's such a niche genre. Similar to something like art films, DE games take quite a bit of patience to appreciate - they aren't for everyone.
Q3: What's your favorite thing about the subreddit?
enderpanda: The fantastic community. They are very good about policing themselves and rarely require intervention from the mods.
Q4: There were so many mixed feelings and doubts leading up to Human Revolution's release, was there alot of ''tension'' within the sub, for lack of better term?
enderpanda: A little bit of apprehension, but I think it was mostly excitement and anticipation to see what a company would do with a new release after so many years (and relief when it turned out to be great).
Q5: Compared to the lead up to Human Revolution, how was the lead up to Mankind Divided?
enderpanda: Definitely less hype (which seems to be almost on purpose by Eidos Montreal - they seem to realize that too much hype can be a bad thing cough No Man's sky cough), but part of that I think comes from people knowing that they will almost certainly do a great job.
Q6: Did you ask for this?
enderpanda: I did! :)
And on that note, I leave you with an absolute gem of a moment
