So here is how it could have played out:

  • Hi AFL mods, Sports mods here. we need a hand with something. Can you please help us deal with issues on our sub?
  • Hi sports mods. Sure, no probs. FYI, it is coming into the biggest month of the year for our sport... maybe our common interest might help out here.
  • Sure no probs.... leave it with us.
  • Hey /r/AFL. Its the Sports mods here. Sorry, what's going on really doesn't fit in with our sub, but we would really love to work things out. So here is an olive branch from us to you guys. We got you some shiny new flairs, and would love to see some great content from you guys leading up to your Grand Final, but in return we just ask you respect that as a serious sub you cut the circlejerk out.
  • /r/AFL community - Just as long as "Fuck Hawthorn" is not counted as circlejerk, we are cool with that!

So here is how it played out:

  • Hey... I have absolutely no leverage over you at all, and need to appeal to your good will, but give me a fucking favor.
  • Sure no probs, let me look into it.
  • Guess what. As a fellow mod, I know that the mods have zero control over their sub's members other than to use their influence, but I'm going to make sure our interaction basically spites all of your users into responding with a fuck you.
  • Er...
  • Guess what! I just followed through on my over the top nuclear threat. Because going the nuclear response as a first resort, and then making a threat when you now truly have burnt every single one of your bargaining chips while completely spiting everyone into action who might not already be involved, and making 100% sure anybody who potentially might be on their side turns against them, is text book on how to make an effective threat.

Funny part about all this is that if they had of come at it with an olive branch, the way /r/AFL works I strongly suspect it could have very quickly been brought around.

Guy is a genius. Really nice touch of bitching about Xenopobia at the end when mid way through he basically gave a big giant fuck you to the explanation that the behavior is literally a reflection of Australian culture.

Like I don't give a shit about her either but damn at least I don't abrasively assert things about gender science I know nothing about, while pretending to not care at all.

I got warned for attacking other users and got banned when I arced up at the mods in mod mail for being totally cool with the hate, even though hateful comments are supposed to be against the rules. Whatevs.

Bloody hell they're taking away our right to tell the truth now?

It's honestly such a childish reaction.

r/Sports is so American biased that it's incredibly cringey.

Solid thread btw. Really shows off the situation is great detail.

I've not quite been able to put a finger on why I'm not a fan of /r/sports the subreddit. It's strange, because I'm not sure there's a sport on Earth I won't watch if given the opportunity, and even taking into account the huge American bias on there (which, after all, is understandable) it's still something I'd be interested in theoretically. In real life though, I find /r/sports less of an attractive proposition to discuss multiple different sports than /r/theocho.

My closest guess is that it's such a 'jack of all trades, master of none' situation. There's no sport discussion on there that wouldn't be better discussed in its dedicated subreddit. Also as a secondary reason, the potential variance in knowledge between users is huge, much more so than any other single sport sub. In any other sports sub, you can assume that the other user at very least knows the groundworks of the game (or, to go off on an /r/theocho tangent again, as much as you do. In other words, nothing) and has an interest in it. Can't do that in /r/sports, where you get easily googleable questions about the simplest facets of the game mixed in with attempted complex analysis and everything ends up messy.

Also I think I develop a nervous twitch every time I wander into the rare soccer thread there and inevitably read without fail someone talking about how amazing LeBron James would be as a soccer player because he's really athletic. Or something. Yeah, that might be it actually.

Do people seriously think James could just walk onto a field and dominate?

Some of them do, but the majority like to work themselves into strange hypotheticals in which LeBron James is somehow trained from birth to play football with coaches comparable to European ones, amongst many other what ifs.

I once shared a really good goal from Messi over there and got like 1000 upvotes or something, nice response. But the comment section had loads of people arguing about the offside rule and if the goal was legal. To everyone who has ever watched or played a little bit of football that was never a debate, clearly the goal wasn't offside. But those fuckers wouldn't give up, just stop arguing if you clearly don't know anything about the subject you're talking about.

It wasn't just the discussion about the offside rule that bothered me. The users in the thread often wrote about stuff with such authority that if I knew nothing about football I would've easily been fooled and thought that they were experts in the field. It was like walking in on a bunch of twelve year olds talking about politics. They want the others to think that they have all the answers and they try to talk all proper but as an outsider with a bit of knowledge you quickly realise that everyone is pretending and are repeating stuff that they have overheard someone else say that they though sounded smart without ever understanding the full context.

LeBron would be a top football player. NFL athletes are better than Rugby athletes. Etc etc.

American website American biases.

See, I don't mind the idea that the NFL can produce more top class athletes than rugby can produce - not necessarily outright better athletes, but more of them, in the sense that rugby can produce one Jonah Lomu in ten years whereas the US can produce Randy Moss, Calvin Johnson and Adrian Peterson in that same time frame. The college system is perfectly set up to recognise, develop and churn out athletic talent. That makes sense.

What doesn't make sense is just deciding that a great basketball player would make a great football player because he's big and athletic. That cheeses me off to no end. It probably is due to the situation being viewed through American lenses, given the greater premium on athleticism that's prevalent in sports like American Football and Basketball over there, but it cheeses me off nonetheless.

Also, fancy seeing you here!

[–]MimesAreShiteshitpost, shitpost into the dying of the light [

The thing is LeBron James is, what, 6'10"? I can't think of any outfield players that tall, ever. A few 6'8" ones but that's it.

edit: i miscalculated, he is 6'8". So pretty much the maximum height of outfield players.

Exactly. A normal person would presume that's because it's simply less useful to be that tall in the sport and that football rewards athletes which are towards the middle of the size spectrum. These special fellas, however, decide that that simply means that it indicates that LeBron James would be even more dominant. Because height is, as Stefan Maierhofer proved, truly the ultimate authority in the game of association football.

[–]MimesAreShiteshitpost, shitpost into the dying of the light [

They probably think Messi would be twice as good if he was a foot taller.

James might make a decent keeper, mind. Dunno what his reflexes are like but I assume he's quite good with his hands.

That's actually the one concession I'm willing to make in this case. I fully believe he could well be a fantastic goalkeeper. A man of that frame, with that athleticism, but without the need to be quite so technically skilled (by comparison)? Wholly believable he could have been a truly gifted 'keeper.

Indeed

45%

I see 48%, but regardless, #2 is around 9%, showing a massive drop off, and Australia is at what, 3%?

So, a 94/6 ratio split between US and AUS.

DAE think it's weird that Americans default to American culture on a website made by Americans hosted in America on an American TLD? Outrageous.

No-one's arguing that US is the single largest demographic, but that doesn't mean that it's somehow American dominated.

Americans defaulting to American culture is fine, but that doesn't mean that everyone else, the majority of the users, should default to it as well. Nothing's wrong with /r/uspolitics and /r/usnews.

Dude, .com is not a US TLD. I know the technicalities behind it, but anything not ending in .us is indistinguishable from international.

A coach was murdered, the players had a moments silence in his memory, and r/sports trolled the fuck out of it and no one got in trouble.

Conversely, we make some jokes about rugby carefully skirting Poe's Law, and we manage to get an entire sport delisted from the sub.

So during the West Indies v Australia Cricket Test at the MCG during the end of last year an MCC (Melbourne Cricket Club) member posted a picture of a very unique urinal in the r/cricket match thread.

He was prompted to post the unique urinal that overlooked the whole ground to r/sports. I decided to travel over to that very same thread and started to explain to users the history of the ground and that specific toilet.

In that thread I used a colloquial Aussie term of endearment on an Australian r/cricket frequenter. I called him a cunt. The r/sports mods obviously were flagged to my comment by the swearing, and I was promptly banned.

I tried to explain to that mod that term wasn't being used to vilify the user, and that we knew each-other, and was in jest. I posted our conversation on r/cricket saying how funny it was that our sense of humour that we take for granted was enough to get me banned in another sub.

He then permabanned me claiming I was brigading. Was good fun.

Americans just don't get sports or how banter works.

A mate of mine was told off for chanting at a football match in the states, it's sad.

In America if someone gives you shit at a sporting event you give it right back not post on reddit whining about it.

Seriously. This isn't an American thing, it's a neckbeard thing. I bet the sports mods have never even played any sports since mandatory PE in 5th grade.

[–]YesThisIsDrake"Monogamy is a tool of the Jew" [

You don't chant in America. You drink. If it's football you yell out how you'd coach. If it's baseball you talk to that person next to you about everything except the game you're watching.

Got half way through reading that and thought "I know this story" then checked the username. 'Twas good times.

how dare you link a comment with me in it! This is prime xenophobia right here!

[–]Calimie [

I don't think I've ever seen a more stupid mod than that one from Sports. To threaten having the admins ban the whole sub is quite something.

The admins do have that power...but they only use it extreme circumstances, and only if the mods fail to act on warnings by the admins over the unacceptable behaviour by their users.

To say the /r/sports mod is reaching is an insult to reachers all over the world.

[–]Calimie [

Oh, sure they can. But why would they do so here when it took them forever to ban actual toxic and dangerous subreddits?

They can't do it anyway. Brigading involves a subreddit where it's actively encouraging users to spam another sub. Because the actual mods of /r/AFL discouraged brigading, and it was entirely the free will of some users, all they can do is have /r/sports ban them from the subreddit, maybe ban their accounts if they were in a shitty mood. They have no grounds to actually ban /r/afl itself, unless they ignored their own rules.

The front page of /r/sports has now been absolutely flooded with AFL shitposts.

looks like they are getting deleted though, they aren't showing up on new anymore

I have to say, some of your comments on there have made my night.

You'll get banned soon, but I admire everything you've done on there.

It was like the whole subreddit became a match thread.

[–]chubbyurmar/AFL needs your support in this tough time [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

I can't explain how much i wanted to join in

The thin skinned mod accused r/AFL of brigading, but I'm not sure if he knew what brigading looked like.

(Not endorsing this by the way, but I'll probably get banned from the sub all the same merely for posting here)

Edit: Just realised that all the upvotes to the side might suggest that I do endorse it... oh well make your own mind up I guess

I have never upvoted so much AFL in my life.

[–]chubbyurmar/AFL needs your support in this tough time [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

I love that our rivalry is unimportant for a little while

Banned person here. While I don't think my actions justified a permanent ban, I can respect that moderating a default subreddit is hard work and they were getting sick of shitposters in AFL threads. However, the head mod has badly handled this situation.

[–]Tabnam [

Oh my God, finally drama that involves a subreddit I post to. This must be what New Zealanders felt like the two times their country made international news in the last 50 years

To the person who reported this: it's fine if someone from the linked drama comes here to SRD. The issue is when it's the other way around. Thanks for looking out.

Hi boy, thanks for making a very important statement about the issues about /r/AFL I, an american would like to thank you for taking part and trying to advertise /r/sports, but unfortunately Australians are banned.

Fuck you

[–]Durfsurn [

tsk tsk thin skin /s

[–]MarcoHanYTJUSTICE FOR /R/AFL [

We are not "thin skinned" or "pansies" or "cunts"

This is what happens when you don't grow up on dairy farms

[–]chubbyurmar/AFL needs your support in this tough time [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

It is also acceptable to grow up around dairy farms

While I'm not as AFL inclined as most of my fellow countrymen - I seriously and genuinly believe Gridiron is a superior sport, and will banter with any cunt that says otherwise - the way the /r/AFL people are dealing with the /r/sports tosser-mod right now is bringing tears to my eyes.

You cunts are legends.

[–]MarcoHanYTJUSTICE FOR /R/AFL [

I, an american thank you for your for the compliment

[–]EggCouncilCreeperI like my popcorn extra-salty [

About time they got caught out for this shit, too. The mod team can be bloody cancerous over there.

Bloody thin-skinned pansy American cunts...

Well I thought we were being funny. As always a subreddit mod lets all the minimal power he has go to his head and ruins the fun.

Some of the ban worthy comments I made on the night.

Uber arrived yet?

Funny you mentioned, I just clicked on the ad to install Uber because my bus route was closed. Unfortunately still not here :(

[–]Bluelegs [

So the admins of /r/sports are bitching and moaning about 'brigading' and ban people for 'trolling' when all those users have done is post a comment on a completely separate subreddit?

They call it a 'minor annoyance' and then proceed to look for people to ban.

r/sports is so stupid. If they fixed the flares in the first place this wouldn't have happened. In australia, there are people who actually take offense to Afl being called rugby. NFL gets called football when it is a spin off from rugby, not soccer. This shows incredible naivety from r/sports, and the refusal to fix it shows idiocracy.

and taking AFL of the pro sports list! taht's stupid. Why ban the sport when a few internet trolls start talking trash. /sports, you brought this backlash upon yourselves. Stupid american wimps that feel the need to have full body armour every time you play sport, and you're the ones acting concussed. Get to the real world.

Hey no need to bag other sports while making your point. I'm Australian and I fkn LOVE American football, and I came to love it from my Aussie rules obsessed background because of people on the internet being nice about my ignorance, and from being willing to learn about the strange different ways of football.

That was /r/NFL, a well modded sports sub that isn't without its flaws, but it's about a million times better than /r/sports.

[–]EggCouncilCreeperI like my popcorn extra-salty [

NFL gets called football when it is a spin off from rugby, not soccer.

To be fair, both Rugby codes are a form of football.

Rugby Football Union

Rugby Football League

Tbf rugby is short for "rugby football", it being the variety of football that developed at Rugby School.

r/sports just banning their entire front page of AFL posts hahahha

Whoo! /r/AFL drama! We out here!

Geelong vs Hawthorn was just about the best final I've seen outside of a GF btw except maybe Collingwood vs West Coast in 2002.

This is so stupid it makes me head hurt...

They've removed the list of sports on the sidebar entirely.

[–]MarcoHanYTJUSTICE FOR /R/AFL [

Theres still a list of sports at the top of the subreddit, yesterday we were listed under "Pro Sports" Today, we're no where to be seen
