The case for Chris Smallkng (self.reddevils)

I am a Blind fan but I feel that in a game where we were never going to retain possession, the benefits of playing Blind were neutralized and I actually feel that we would not have conceded one goal or so with Smalling on the field. The physicality of both Smalling and Bailly would have taken its toll on City, Bailly wouldn't have to exhaust himself and go for every header off open field plays, and Smalling is excellent at closing down fast and marking tightly as we saw with his great season last year. This is besides the point but we should have opted for a Fellaini Blind Pogba midfield, with Blind having so much experience at CB now I feel like he would be an excellent ball-winning defensive midfielder, almost like a Stopper role, which I feel like we needed in this derby but that's just my opinion.

I understand what Blind offers, he's a smart player with and without the ball but is Smalling just going to be relegated to the bench? He was one of our captains last year and I'm sure he is a big voice communication wise in sorting out the defense and midfield.

I think blind in the back line offers a balance that we might not get from a smalling and bailey combo where its aggressive and physical. I would like to see blind playing a holding role in front of them two though especially when Valencia and shaw push up.

Both Carrick and Ander play the holding role better than Blind.

It's more situational, blind is better defensively than carrick and Herrera and I would have blind in that role to close down someone like Ozil or Oscar and leave the 2CB free.

I'm not agreeing one way or the other.. but Blind has improved a lot, especially defensively, since the last time he played CDM for us. His experience and development over the last year or so would definitely stand to him playing in that role in front of the two CBs.

Although I am in agreement regarding Smalling, I personally would have considered dropping Bailly to the bench (now hear me out Bailly fans & down voters). Of course he has had an amazing start to his career and wasn't named POTM for no reason, however In a game like that I think you need the experience of past to call upon as its truly underrated in a game of that magnitude, which both Blind & Smalling have

Though Eric was a little too rash in his challenging and ball winning early on, gave some cheap fouls away & of course missed the key header which led to the goal. Blind was not without fault either but by the end of the game Bailly was dead on his feet and I think the occasion got to him a bit.

Imagine being able to call upon Bailly in a game like that (had we been leading) to come on late and sure things up, he's an absolute rock.

Food for thought anyway.

City's forwards, particularly De Bruyne, were all over him. I think Blind is a very good player, but I still don't think he can be a first choice centre back. The game where I really made my mind up was against Swansea last year (I think we lost 2-1). Gomis was all over Blind, because he was just bigger and stronger.

We've had games in the past where Vidic has been torn apart by Torres, or Rio by Messi, but that's understandable. Gomis isn't exactly a top player.
