Yes, to log in, just like WhatsApp. But unlike WhatsApp you can run telegram on desktop without needing to be online on phone at the same time.

i dont mind if google comes to know my PC browsing history.

but via mobile apps my entire bank, personal data is available. and yes i do not use any google account on my phone.
