Sadly there is little your friend can do other than move to an area he is unlikely to have these people in his circle and start fresh. He would have a hard time proving libel as there is a difference between charges being dropped and being found not guilty. Also would add it would probably tarnish his reputation more to shine the light on what he wishes would go away.

Depending on how much of a buddy he is, perhaps offer to go with him somewhere new for the fresh start. Then you two could share expenses and costs.

This is the curse of social stigma. Which doesn't really exist for females anymore since the slut label is now in vogue.

The above poster has the best solution if he doesn't want to deal with it.

If I were him I wouldn't give two shits what other people think. Just do your job and do it well. Be reliable.

He's just gotta focus on the job nothing else when at work.

And yeah no way the libel suit would take seeing as how it is all hearsay. Obviously maybe he should consider talking to a lawyer. Especially if he has some kind of evidence.

But in reality I think he is better off busting his tail at the job and not worrying about his stupid co-workers.

Sorry yer buddy has to deal with this junk.

Hearsay is an out of court statement offered to prove the truth of the matter asserted, except that statements by a party opponent is defined as not hearsay. So the statements of people talking about him allegedly raping someone wouldn't be hearsay. For one thing, they would be the party opponents. For another, he wouldn't offer their statements to prove that he raped someone. Strictly as an evidentiary matter, it is conceivable that he could win a case, depending on what was actually said. Truth is a defense to defamation, and it gets really technical. If someone said, "I heard that guy raped somebody" and they did, in fact hear that, then the statement is true, even if it can be absolutely proved he didn't rape anyone. So it would involve finding out exactly what words were used, only to then open the door to the other side to present whatever evidence they could to try and prove he was a rapist. This could get really bad, and I think your advice is sound, regardless of whether he could win a defamation case.
