I got permabanned lol. I assumed they just removed the comments, seems a bit less ironic if they're just permabanning everyone.

It was a joke. /u/nigwantskfc tried to change it back, but was threatened by other mods of the sub that if he did (or removed their permissions) that they would SWAT and/or dox him. It's a pretty dire situation right now, and I don't see it turning around any time soon.

Yes, and it's honestly an improvement on the comments that were there before. Now, instead of every comment thread being an argument over whether the gif was or not shitty, people who aren't retarded can at least get a laugh out of people taking the internet way, WAY too seriously as they flip out over the fact that they can't comment, even though the only thing they're ever commenting about is how they can't comment.
