Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says rival Democrat Hillary Clinton would be laughed at by Russian President Vladimir Putin. (Sept. 6) AP

Donald Trump got the backing of 88 retired U.S. generals and admirals Tuesday.

“It is a great honor to have such amazing support from so many distinguished retired military leaders,” Trump said in a statement. “Keeping our nation safe and leading our armed forces is the most important responsibility of the presidency.”

The list of admirals and generals who signed the letter includes four 4-star and 14 3-star flag officers.

Trump has made veterans affairs a central theme of his campaign. However, he got into hot water this summer after insulting the family of a fallen soldier.
