0' City get us underway! They're attacking the Stretford End for the first half. United in red, City in blue.

5' Both teams are pressing high whenever the other team has the ball. City with more possession in the opening minutes though and have been putting some dangerous balls into the box.

7' Pogba with the first strike of the game. Rooney with a cross-field ball to Mkhitaryan who then lays it off to Pogba but his shot from around 30 yards out goes about a foot over the bar.

9' Bailly gives away a free kick in a dangerous position after clattering into De Bruyne. Kolarov and KdB to take...

9' Kolarov hits it but it's yards over the bar.

13' Our passing and control hasn't been up to par so far in the game. Mkhitaryan, Rooney, and Lingard are all looking sloppy on the ball.

14' MANCHESTER CITY GOAL De Bruyne scores and it's way too easy. Kolarov hits the ball long and Iheanacho wins the header in front of Bailly, and KdB darts in ahead of a napping Blind and slots it past De Gea one-on-one. No chance.

18' United have their first corner of the game. Rooney swings it in high and City get their head to it.

21' City are dictating the tempo and attacking flow of the game and United can't really get the ball clear.

25' United counter quickly with Rooney spreading the ball wide to Mkhitaryan on the wing but his whipped cross hits the first man and is out for a throw.

25' Rooney is getting a warning from Clattenburg for diving into challenges and is just being told to calm down a bit. Rooney also got into a bit of a tiff with Guardiola who was keeping the ball away from him at a throw-in.

27' Mkhitaryan is played through from the back by Blind but is whistled for offside so his penalty appeal against Bravo won't come to anything.

35' MANCHESTER CITY GOAL De Bruyne drops both Blind and Lingard in the box and his left footed shot rolls past De Gea and is off the post but it falls back to Iheanacho who slots home.

40' United can't get anything going right now.

40' MANCHESTER CITY YELLOW CARD Silva dives in and gets a yellow for taking Valencia down. Otamendi also dove in but the foul was already given by then.

45+1' Rooney capitalises on a defensive mistake and swings a ball to the far post for Ibrahimovic but he can't get the power behind the header and Bravo catches easily.

45+2' Ibrahimovic should've scored! Lingard does well to tee off Ibrahimovic and there's no-one in goal but Stones on the line and Ibra can only muster a left-footed dribbler that is easily cleared!

45' United kick off the second half attacking the Stretford End. Multiple United changes.

45' Not sure how we're going to lineup this half but it's looking like Rooney on the right and Rashford on the left. Pogba, Fellaini, and Herrera are all going to be rotating around the 10 role.

46' Rashford starts brightly already and he drops Sagna before chipping the ball into Ibrahimovic but the shot flies over the bar.

47' Another ball from Rooney to Ibrahimovic but his volley flies over the bar again.

50' MANCHESTER UNITED YELLOW CARD Ibrahimovic nips at Otamendi's ankles and gets a booking.

51' MANCHESTER UNITED YELLOW CARD Fellaini with a questionable booking for having his arm hit Kolarov in the face. Definitely wasn't intentional.

52' MANCHESTER CITY SUBSTITUTION Fernando ON || Iheanacho OFF

55' Bravo with more attempts to dribble out of his own box and he's almost punished for it as he clashes with Rooney. Not a penalty but not very smart from Bravo.

57' Rooney and Valencia counter attack and the latter tries to get a cross in but the ball hits Otamendi on the arm and it's no penalty. Clattenberg waves away more protests.

59' MANCHESTER CITY SUBSTITUTION Sane ON || Sterling OFF

65' Fellaini wins a long ball and Ibrahimovic is on the end of it but his volley is once again too high to trouble Bravo.

69' UNITED HAVE THE BALL IN THE NET BUT IT'S DISALLOWED! Rashford uses his pace to counter and his shot at goal deflects off Ibrahimovic who is in an offside position and the flag goes up.

71' DAVE SAVES! De Gea makes a stunning save from a City corner! Otamendi is also a diving cunt isn't he? Goes down rolling at the drop of a hat.

74' CITY HIT THE POST AGAIN! Sane feeds De Bruyne through on the City counter and he hits the post and it rolls behind for a goal kick...

77' Rooney fouls Fernandinho in a dangerous position and it's De Bruyne over it again. Much like the first half...

Is nobody concerned that Rooney played awful. There was a time where he had acres of space to turn into and attack, yet he just dropped it back 20 yards. He should be good enough to realize to turn regardless of communication. Side note: Herrera was excellent when he came on. Was absolutely everywhere, and I think he should start with Blind and Pogba once Smalling is back in a 4-3-3.

If anyone is keeping score (and I'm sure they are) it's definitely Pep 1, Jose 0. Pep had his team spot on for today.

Jose said he'd prefer Aguero playing so he'd know how to set up which says a lot. I don't think Pep was quite as worried about United's attack and was just more interested in their own strengths.

There was no fluidity at all with United. Players were losing the ball everywhere. Rooney's brain isn't up to the pace of the game at times and it's costing him possession every game. If Ibra gets a chance he'll take it but he's not going to run defenders ragged for the most of the game. Lingard was the wrong choice. Mikhi probably showed the general public why Mourinho has been slow to introduce him.

Mourinho has such a great record against big teams so it was disappointing to see us being walked all over by City at home. Work to be done.

We gave them way too much space. De Bruyne must have bamboozled as to how he was able to find open pockets so often. Rooney and Zlatan are too slow to work together. He needs Moore from the wide men today. It was just such a shame after a positive start. Rooney needs to sort himself out or Jose needs to drop him. He supposed to be our #10 but he's just so off the boil. Pogba had moments of greatness and then fell off the boil. Blind got found out a bit today.

But hey ho into the Europa League. 😵

It was not Blind, it was Bailly's fault. Who would leave a striker to attack a header in their own half without a challenge. Bailly is avg, and Blind too in this match. Valencia has to improve on the crossing quality. I know he works hard and keeps the wingers in check, his crosses are not consistent. Team played really good in second half, apart from the KDB's shot inside post(fortunate it didnt go in). All in all, Jose knows how to beat Pep, and it's one of the biggest factors to sign him. I have confidence in him, and we are going give a good fight for title this season.

Great game for the neutral to watch. Jose will know he got the line up wrong. Lingard couldn't possibly be fit enough to start such a big game and even if he was,he is light years behind rashford and martial.

I like fellaini. I really do. I've always backed him and played in the right way he is a concern for the opposition. But today he wasn't mobile enough in 1st half when de bruyne was free all the time. In big games schneiderlin has to start. More mobile and just as tidy on the ball.

Pogba got harsh lesson today. He showed flashes of brilliance but too often got caught quickly on the ball. Premier league football is much quicker than serie A and he will take time to adjust. He wasn't awful by any means but lot of improvement needed.

Smalling should come back in after today. That 1st goal was a horror show. Maybe he'll start the next game.

Bravo is a donkey. I said it when barca signed him and i'll say it again. At barca it was masked over. He was rarely under pressure in the air and has all the time in the world in the ball. In this league he will be bombarded after this game. It happened de Gea and you can bet every free kick and corner for rest of season will be down his throat and players piling in. Every back pass will be chased down. Hart is an average GK but he rarely took chances on the ball. Bravo made every wrong decision available today and is lucky he didn't cost his team more goals. He will cost city plenty of points this season.

All in all apart from lingard starting and that 1st 37 minutes,it was edge of the seat stuff between 2 heavyweights going toe to toe. Fair play to city on the result but united response after going 2 down gives us plenty to cheer for going forward. Instead of sitting back worried of losing more goals united went all out attack and could've got more than 1.

Good game of football at the end of the day. Big reality check for the players going into a busy month. If we can replicate that second half, we can beat any team in the league. A switch to 4-3-3 might be on the cards. Also, Rashford deserves to start on Thursday.

Kudos to Pep and the City players actually gave it their all and seemed in the game. We didn't step up. Its disappointing to see that an 18 year old is the most dangerous looking player on the pitch in a team full of players with years of experience. Very disappointing loss.

Rooney wasn't brilliant, pogba wasn't great. Everyone was pretty bad apart from the defense and De Gea. Wayne cannot be our go-to guy anymore. Ander and Juan should've started, or anyone that wouldn't have let City run all over us for thirty minutes(which doesn't let you say it was close when you spend a third of the match mercilessly helpless). Mihki was double teamed but should've made a better effort, anybody know why Lingard started ahead of Martial? And sorry, just pissed off

Also, wasn't Miki a bit iffy too? Either still partially injured, or just back from a minor injury. He also hadn't started a single game for us before today, and Mou thought that the Manchester derby was the best time for him to start?

I know Mou said that he can't wait for September so he can start playing everyone, but I assumed he meant the players who haven't been getting game time. I thought Jesse and Miki would start against Feyenoord, and the only change he'd make to the squad for this game was Smalling, and maybe changing Rooney for a midfielder behind Pogba and Fellaini.

I'm struggling to work out why he played the side he did, and just sat off city for so long in the first half. It's disappointing and i've been so positive this season so far.

We dominated the 2nd half because they let us. They had the game won at half time, and Pep went in that dressing room with a smile on his face saying "boiz it's 2-0 at Old Trafford, lets waste time and play to defend the inevitable onslaught that united will come out with". If Bravo wasn't a donk the score would have been 2-0 still at full time.

This. You could obviously tell they were timewasting. We came out to a great second half, but about 10 minutes in they got it back, slowed it down. Otamendi dived like a fucking olympian, and faked injuries, and Bravo took his sweet time to get the ball for a goal kick.

Neutral here (though I like following Pep's teams).

It doesn't seem that way though, IMO. Pep was going for more goals in the second half but City was pretty much startled when Utd start pressing like a motherfucker, and was fortunate not to concede another goal during that time.

Pep made subs and changes that nullify Utd's threats 10 mins later tho, but City clearly still had their hands full with the heavy pressing that Utd employed even after the subs, which as pointed out, resulted in plenty of last ditch tackles and plenty of "just hoof it up the field moments" by City.

The take away from this game is that Utd has demonstrated that it is possible to beat City via pressing, at least for now. They ain't no barca/bayern... yet. And Utd is definitely going to be very dangerous for all teams this season, if Mou set Utd players to press like in the second half.

People are going to have selective memories and say city wiped the floor with us but that was only in the first half. Second half we were taking the initiative and city were playing on the counter. So many city players lunging to make last minute blocks or tackles in the second half. Clattenberg made more calls favorable to city than us... Just look at the number of yellows. And people on r/soccer saying Pogba played like shit... Did you see how many times he got past players only to be tripped?

Great game. Rashford should have started. City shat their pants looking at his pace. Wrong time to gamble with Lingard. We started the second half really strong, knew it would end with a loss when no goal came. But 10/10 for effort. Have a distinct feeling we'll come back really strong from this, unlike the crazy descending spiral of last year's losses. And yeah. Rooney needs to be benched, until he ups his game by 10-20%

I'm sorry but rooney was terrible today. Usually I find a way to back him but today he was awful. That tackle on bravo was scandalous. Bravo made bad decision. Put city under pressure. Otamendi was in trouble and rooney decides to lunge at bravo and gave city opportunity to waste 90secs near end of the game. He should know better.

If you are going to criticize Rooney for a moment at the end of the game, then fair enough. But first half it was all Rooney and I'd argue that Rooney was the one player truly ready for the intensity and importance of today's derby. Derbies are going to get heated and I'd rather see fighting spirit than to lose meekly with our tails between our legs. If you want to talk time wasting, city made numerous cynical tackles in the end to waste time.

I'm not criticising him just for that. In 1st half he lost so much ball. He ran around fouling and to me he had lost his head. He carted too much and it was detrimental to his performance. I love passion but it has to be used right. Yes city time wasted numerous times and fair play to them for doing it and getting away with it. But giving them the opportunity to waste 90 secs for your own stupidity while they were under serious pressure is just being a clown. He should know far better than that and kicked out prob out of frustration at being so out of the game

Good points. I only disagree to say Rooney played very well first half and just good in the second. He did foul quite a bit in the second half. As to losing the ball first half, all our players couldn't hold or make a pass; it was a city blitzkrieg and Rooney arguably was the best at trying to keep possession and get the ball out of pressure from the city pressing.

IMO I don't think he did. He wasted just as much as he kept it. He got around and mouthed off at ref and could've and should've been booked much earlier. Thought he was well off the pace today and I usually defend him but he was lucky not to be subbed at half time

That terrible first half performance cost us, disappointed with the result but people are going to make out that they're the far superior team when that really isn't the case.

We missed so many easy chances that the result could have easily been a lot different.

I must say Neville as usual is unbearable to listen to during United games, I hate it when he commentates on our games because he tries too hard to come across as a neutral.

Not sure how exactly that could have been one of the best ever first half performances he has ever seen.

Time to avoid all media until the next game because as usual people are going to overreact and have a meltdown based on only the 4th game of the season.
