To start, I'm not Swedish, so I'm coming at this from an American perspective. The Swedes should do whatever makes the most sense from their own cultural perspective.

But as an American, I'm not a fan of strict quotas like this. I'm not against diversity or inclusion, but I think that private companies should be allowed to elevate the most qualified people to their boards of directors. And if there are more qualified men than women, then the answer is to boost up women from the bottom so that they develop the skills and experience to sit on the board based upon their own merits, not to mandate their inclusion.

In my experience, one of the side effects of quotas is that it makes people feel as if the people being elevated (women, here) are less qualified than they really are, because they assume that women are just on the board because of this rule, not because they deserve to be. I think in the long term, stuff like this could backfire. I would rather see efforts to make corporate structure more family friendly, which would help everyone and allow more women to reach higher positions.

And one day, will they make a mandate that 40% of the board must be comprised of men if, for example, women had more heads at the table?

It seems to me that if this is true, then consisrency requires that they be fined for having less than 40% representation in their labour force. For example, construction companies should be required to have 40% female construction workers so that women are forced to be strong, free and independent.

I'm not really sure there are enough women even interested in that line of work to fill 40% of a construction company's ranks.

No. Neither am I. What do you think follows?

If I were a woman, I would always wonder if I was there because of my skills/effort/drive etc., or if I was just handed a juicy plum because of a bit of popular legislation. I think it would be soul crushing, if that were the case. And BTW... NO disrespect to women who have succeeded in the business world. I have known a few, and I know they've earned it. Nuff' said!

Moreover it can exclude men who both want, and are good at, the role, potentially with a woman who is the inferior candidate. This is even more likely with such a large chunk in such a short time frame.

Good point. And here is some thing else to think about... Investors in these companies are hoping for the best results. Not based on gender, hair color, or foot size. Yet they are at the mercy of government regulations.

My main concern would be that people would reach a higher position in a company for the wrong reasons. Not saying this doesn't already happen, but rules like these can be used as excuses

Stupid!

Will they face penalties if they fail to have 40% male representation on their boards?

[–]Diecastcrazy 7ポイント8ポイント  (1子コメント)

Most likely not.

Of course not, that would be sexist

I'd like to know who came up with the idea of gender quotas, so I can hit them a slap.

It's the very definition of discrimination.

"Well, Mr. ____ you certainly do have a wonderful resume and decades of experience which would make you perfect for this job. However, we're already at 60% male here so unfortunately we are going to have to reject your application."

Funny thing is at work just yesterday I was doing up some applicant rejection / feedback emails and had to try find a way to say constructive but where possible positive things. I can just see it now, having my job made so much easier, just having to write "sorry, we've got enough men working here". Fantastic stuff
