A better roof than I have on top of my house too.

Once you get to that over $2 million custom home level you start to see some seriously ugly shit. Pretty much every house on the market at that level needs to be gutted usually because of the terrible colors and finishes. Only in a multi million dollar custom home will you see dark green carpet and terrible floral wallpaper everywhere.

The bottles being stored upright is a powerful statement about the owner's knowledge of wine. The faux Tuscan cantina doubly so for his taste.

Yep, let's see just how many different architecture themes and styles that we can cram into one room.

Any good examples of this being tastefully done?

William Koch has a pretty nice cellar. But he had the stone imported from Austria, and I'd hazard guess his design is out of reach for all but 0.01%.

The "I'm rich with no taste and I went to Italy once" starter pack.

This is horrible, I think I've seen the place in person, it was in a "Street of Dreams" house in the Seattle area. My thoughts: 1) It looks dumb, subjective sure, but when has building a mock structure within a structure, let alone a residential structure, ever been a nice architectural feature? And the tuscan theme is over and done, even Olive Garden is remodeling to delete this style 2) This wastes floorspace that could be better used for a more opulent staircase, or just open space within the entry. Fancy staircase are difficult to go out of style, weird hermit house centered in the entryway though... 3)This serves no purpose, other than being a closet, why would you glorify a closet into a feature that cannot be unseen? 4) The argument that wine is so prized as to deserve this monstrosity fails for to reasons 1) It's gauche to show off (Considering seeing someone's ferrari when they answer the door) and 2) Under stairs is not good for wine, Ideal wine storage has low temp, 55°F, minimal temperature variation, Darkness, No Vibrations 5) And if the above reasons to tear this out didn't sway you, how are you ever going to clean the dust off the tiles? You can't walk on tile easily without breaking them, and there a million nooks and crannies to collect dust 6) The balusters at the top of the stairs over crowded. The builder did this because of the requirement to have no space within the guard system for a child to fall through, (4" by code) However, this can be accomplished with a simple black wright iron bar in the middle the cast concrete out. 7) What the hell is that at the top right of the picture? Is it an art piece? This is just horrible trash, and whoever built it should be embarrassed and buying up every picture of it to keep it away from the public

1) it looks dumb to you, if this is someone's home they may actually like it in which case, if they could afford to have it and they like it, then it's not really anyone's place to judge. Yes, the style may be outdated at this point, but we don't know when this picture was taken
2) Size of the house based on what we can see here, they can likely afford to spare the floor space without a worry, and not everyone cares for fancy staircases. This may also be by the back entry near the kitchen instead of the main entry so the smaller staircase would be more utilitarian than a primary staircase. 3) It serves it's purpose to hold wine, that appears to be what it was built for and therefore it is serving it's purpose
4) Who cares if it's gauche to show off, plenty of people do it and yes, there are plenty of people that love to show off their fancy cars as much as anything, and there is a very good chance that this room has its own separate climate controls to keep it at optimal temperatures.
5) there are plenty of cleaning tools for reaching awkward areas and anyone who can afford to have something like this in their home can likely afford a professional cleaner to tend to the dust
6) the choice of balusters was probably picked by the owner, not the builder and that goes right back to personal preferences, what one person finds ugly another may find beautiful
7) The top right is probably just an art piece

There is also a good chance that this is in fact an Olive Garden, especially when you look at the small entryway table and painting on the bottom left that is identical to pretty much every single Olive Garden I've ever seen, and the fact that several bottles of wine are stored upright instead of on its side indicating that it is quickly used instead of aging over an extended period of time. The hand railing on the stairs is also more in line with a commercial building than a personal home.

All that said, you sound like a pretentious ass that seems to think your taste in architecture is somehow superior when in fact, it's just personal preference. And judging the style of something that may well have been built when the Tuscan theme was very popular is just arrogant. You don't like it, that's fine, no need to be a jerk about it.

Is this a little flashy? Absolutely. But I'd still enjoy putting a chair in there, closing the door and enjoying a tipple.

I think this is awesome, I don't get people calling this tacky.
