Carrick wouldn't have been able to handle the tempo today. Way too fast for him.

Carrick was never about his pace. It was his composure, defensive positioning and passing ability. He was very much needed to control the game, and help us transition better from midfield to attack.

No way Carrick is suited for this derby, Fernando and Fernandinho are too fast for him.

He might play on Thursday in the cup.

City's midfield would run Carrick into the ground today

All of you who think you need only pace to play football must not realise how absurd that is. Carrick is a very special talent. He shouldn't have started but to have him not even on the bench when there was plenty of room for him is mental. If Carrick is on the pitch, he can take set pieces, meaning Rooney can get into the box and actually help us threaten their defence. We simply didn't threaten them today unless it was Rashford running at them. Carrick could play deep with Herrera next to him and the back line staying a bit deeper as well. Let him have the ball and play it deep into their 18 year box and let our attackers attack. He could have come on for the invisible Pogba. I know many of you will not like that because the video games told you otherwise but it would have changed our entire attack to have Rooney up the pitch, with Rashford and Fellani pushing in Beijing Zlatan

Team selection wasn't the issue. It was our defensive mindset in the first half. Only player truly off the pace was Mkhitaryan.

Team selection was one of the problems though, even Mourinho assumed it. Mkhitaryan and Lingard were sleeping in the first half

Yea... Lingard average. Mkhitaryan, truly awful.

Our tactics were definitely a problem in the first half. Our two in midfield got run around because neither are defensive minded players and we didn't have a plan to deal with De Bruyne in the hole.

Ehhh. I boil it down to individual errors tbh. City's advanced 4-3-3 will always create chances on a defensive 4-3-3, I'm sure Mourinho knew that. It's Bailly and Blind for the first goal. I can't blame Blind for the second.

Individual errors aren't the reason for being completely outplayed for 35-40 minutes. If we were going to sit back then we should have set up to do so and started Rashford up front and played three in midfield. It's hard to counter when you have no pace up front and your midfield two can't risk going forward knowing they'll leave the back four exposed.

We can't counter when we let 2 in though. The goals were not tactical, but individual.

We should have played more possession, that's for sure.

When you are under pressure for a whole half mistakes will be made. Yeah the first goal was bad but they had plenty of chances and the second was not any individual mistake.

Of course it was the issue we had Fellaini basically single handed my trying to defend in midfield vs a Guardiola side.

I said in the summer than Pogba can't defend well enough to play in a 2 and that was damn clear today.

Should never have gone 4-2-3-1 with Pogba and Rooney through the middle vs a Pep side
