Destiny, a FPS with RPG and MMO characteristics (even though it isn't exactly) made by the "Halo" developers Bungie, has gotten many a player hooked in either it's gameplay, lore, characters, etc. When it was teased and revealed as the game Bungie was working on all those years ago, /r/Destinythegame was made. (Not to be confused with /r/destiny).
With one of my favorite subreddit designs and CSS, there is much to discover.
Going by this, let's get to some of the awesomeness this sub has in store.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you came to moderating this sub.
/u/NorseFenrir I'm Norse. I was never much of a redditor before getting into Destiny (although I made my account back around the TwitchPlaysPokemon days), but I found /r/DestinyTheGame and liked the community, so I hung around, participated and helped out where I could. Just over a year ago, the team approached me to join. I jumped at the chance to get involved more with the community (although if they keep wishing me a happy birthday, I may grow to regret it).
/u/MetalGilSolid Name's Gil. While I had a Reddit account for while (I created it to ask a question on /r/ps4, and barely went on reddit ever again), I only really started browsing thanks to /r/DestinyTheGame. Eventually, due to my love of riddles and puzzles, I started posting my own Destiny themed riddles on the sub, which started to take off. About a year ago, the mods asked if I'd like a position on the team, along with /u/aaron-il-mentor and /u/NorseFenrir (Happy birthday Norse!), and naturally, I jumped at the opportunity.
/u/MisterWoodhouse I'm Woodhouse. I've been on reddit for a little over 5 years now, but this is my second account, due to an unfortunate doxxing incident. I came to moderate DTG as a result of my work on reddit's premiere Destiny RNG rage subreddit, /r/DidntGetMyGjallarhorn, in the /new queue of DTG, and as the host of DestinyReddit LIVE!, our recurring Reddit Live simulcast show for Bungie's Twitch stream reveals.
/u/Fuzzle_hc Fuzzle here, when I first stumbled upon Reddit I was an old Halo fan that was looking forward to Bungie's new game Destiny. I heard good things about this Destiny Reddit and decided to check it out for discussion on this just announced and mysterious game. While I found Reddit to be an unintuitive mess I stuck around for the great discussions and speculation in this (back then) small community. After a while of being active here I applied to be a moderator and the rest is history.
/u/thirdegree I'm thirdegree! I joined DTG to help out /u/D0cR3d on his army of bots that keep this sub up and running. I started playing destiny shortly after that, and I love it!
/u/redka243 I'm redkain243 or /u/redka243. I became addicted to this sub shortly after getting the game and becoming addicted to it. I helped people a lot in mentor monday and wrote a bunch of helpful guides and the mod team noticed at one point and invited me to join. Have been having a blast ever since.
Most people know of the disappointing launch for Destiny, so how has it evolved since then?
/u/NorseFenrir It's virtually a different game. The rocky launch was understandable. The core framework of the game was there, with really satisfying mechanics, but there just wasn't much to do, and exploiting the game was more fruitful than playing it (RIP Lootcave). Thankfully Bungie has listened to the feedback over time and the game has got better and better, with The Taken King Expansion basically being the game many feel Destiny should have been when it launched. It's certainly right up there now.
/u/MetalGilSolid The one thing I can say about Bungie is this: they listen. Destiny had so many complains at launch (and new ones cropping up at each update), and plenty of them get addressed. Destiny is no longer a game with a bland campaign and one end game activity. At this points, there's loads to do, and I can't imagine anyone getting bored, especially if they have friends to play with.
/u/MisterWoodhouse Year 2 has been like an entirely new game. The Taken King fixed a ton of problems that players faced in Year 1, while also adding some great content and oodles of gear.
/u/Fuzzle_hc I used to be in a love/hate relationship with Destiny (as many others). The gunplay felt amazing but everything else was unrewarding and kind of hollow. It pained me to see the potential Bungie had with this game but I was cautiously optimistic that they can expand and enhance the experience. 2 years later I can confidently say that Bungie exceeded my expectations with constant updates, occasional new content batches and a great sense for building a community.
/u/thirdegree I honestly couldn't tell you, I didn't play for Y1 or most of TTK for that matter.
/u/redka243 Destiny is a much better game than it was at launch. There is a lot more to do, more and better story content, much more and better PVP with private matches coming soon.
Favorite Exotic weapon and armor, go!
/u/NorseFenrir Favourite weapon: Definitely Invective. I've gotten a lot of mileage out of that bad boy, and who doesn't love a weapon that regens its own ammo? As for armour, it has to be the Armamentarium. Life's not complete unless you're throwing all the grenades.
/u/MetalGilSolid The weapon might be my trusty MIDA Multi-Tool. It keeps me agile, gives me a radar, and the sound it makes when firing is quite satisfying. As for armor, that's a tough one, but I've always been quite fond of Helm of Saint-14. The thought of watching enemies stumble around blindly in my bubble while I say hello with my fists gets me up in the morning.
/u/MisterWoodhouse Favorite Exotic weapon right now is the Telesto. I have so much fun with that thing, especially with a modifier combo involving Void Burn, Specialist, and/or Airborne. Favorite Exotic armor is definitely Obsidian Mind, even though I no longer main my Warlock. It's a blast to run triple Obsidian Mind Voidwalkers in Heroic Strikes with friends.
/u/Fuzzle_hc Raze Lighter is my Gjallarhorn on a stick, it's hard to unequip it. Young Ahamkara's Spine for trip mine shenanigans in PvP and Bones of Eao for that quadruple jump in PvE (Basically anything with Ahamkara Bones).
/u/thirdegree MIDA multi tool without question. Armor - I'm definitely a fan of Apotheosis Veil.
/u/redka243 The helm of saint 14 and the Gjallarhorn. Both are enormous gamechangers and incredibly iconic and have amazing lore attached to them.
What do you enjoy most about Destiny?
/u/NorseFenrir The Raid content. It's fun and challenging and can be frustrating, but there's nothing more fun in Destiny than grabbing 5 friends and blasting some aliens in the face while you laugh and joke at each other's fuck-ups. Close second is the Crucible (multiplayer pvp) for the same reasons.
/u/MetalGilSolid Besides being a fun game in general? I'd say the social aspect. I used to be into single player games for more than multiplayer (barring some exceptions), but now it's a lot more balanced. Destiny has led me to making new friends all of the world (even meeting some in person), and I think it's pretty cool that a game can do that.
/u/MisterWoodhouse I love the gunplay. Combat in Destiny just feels right to me. Other shooters come close to feeling right, but they either end up too "floaty" or too "stiff" for my tastes.
/u/Fuzzle_hc That it's a world I love to be in along with everyone else. There is this great sense of community in Destiny that really is something special, it is elevated by the hopeful game world in which we take back the solar system together.
/u/thirdegree Everything feels so smooth. I've never really liked first person shooters when I've tried them before, but destiny manages to really nail the gameplay, to the point that I even enjoy pvp. No matter how hilariously bad I am at it!
/u/redka243 The invesment game aspect and the RPG feel to it. I've never played or enjoyed any FPS before this game and i love it. It scratches an itch that no other game does for me. I love that there's always something i can do to become more powerful right now or better prepare myself for the future. The variety of guns and how good they feel to shoot is amazing. I love that the game is never "over". No matter how many times i do an activity, there's something new i get out of it each time because playing with other players makes it always a new experience. I feel like destiny is what mass effect could be like if the story never ended and you could play with friends instead of playing alone and it had pvp too.
What are you looking forward to most in Rise of Iron?
/u/NorseFenrir Wolves. Lots of wolves. Plus, there's a new set of Titan armour which looks badass, complete with a Skyrim-esque horned helmet, which I can't wait to get my hands on. I'm also liking the idea of the Arthurian-inspired Lore stuff they've hinted at, so that should be cool.
/u/MetalGilSolid Private Matchmaking, for sure. Playing alongside my friends is fun, but giving them a shotgun to the face is even more fun.
/u/MisterWoodhouse I'm really looking forward to exploring the Plaguelands! Patrol is my favorite game mode in Destiny because I get to explore, race around on my Sparrow, and try new things out on enemies without the restrictions of rigid objectives.
/u/Fuzzle_hc I am really looking forward to the new patrol area "Plague Lands" and uncovering its secrets. Also figuring out the Raid blind with 6 friends is the best coop experience in gaming to date.
/u/thirdegree New raids! PvE has always been my thing and I'll always look forward to new big bosses to kill and new loot to get.
/u/redka243 The new radar! It looks like its lower on the screen in Rise of Iron than in the current game which means I might actually be able to see it while remote playing on my vita if the "connection is not ideal" icon appears at the top-left of the screen. I play on my vita about 90% of the time and this would be huge. Otherwise the new raids, the new gear, and more vault space (not confirmed but hopefully its coming soon).
For some fun, what's your Guardian's backstory?
/u/NorseFenrir Fenrir-13, an Exo Defender Titan. A former Striker, his Ghost advised him to find a new vocation after he threw himself off a cliff a few too many times. He tried Sunbreaker, only to find that he would knock himself out with his returning Hammer of Sol. Eventually Ghost gave up and just made him choose Defender - he can't hurt himself too much with a wall between him and the outside world.
/u/MetalGilSolid Since the backstories aren't exactly extensive, I'll give the short version for all 3: My Awoken Hunter is a wise and adaptive thinker, never rushing into any situation. My Exo Titan has a bit of a mean streak, and while not stupid, is reckless and all about the action. My Human Warlock is a bit naive and new to defending the world, but he's eager to help and has a lot of potential.
/u/MisterWoodhouse My main right now is a Sunbreaker Titan. Being known as "The Banhammer" on reddit, I was instantly attracted to that subclass when The Taken King released. My Sunbreaker likes to hit things with the Banhammer of Sol :)
/u/Fuzzle_hc My Hunter was killed when he tried to flee from Earth during the Collapse which ended humanity's Golden Age. He and many others lost their trust in the Traveler and fled Earth hoping that the Darkness wouldn't pursue them. After the Traveler made his last stand on Earth the Darkness turned their many heads towards his fleet of human ships and destroyed it in an instant. This was the birth of the Awoken as the survivors of this incident where changed forever wavering between Light and Dark. My Hunter's ship entered Earth's atmosphere after the attack and the impact ended what little life was left in him. Hundreds of years later he was brought back from the Dead as a Guardian of the Light to protect what is left of Humanity.
/u/thirdegree Thirdegree... I kill things. I'm also not very good at backstory :D
/u/redka243 I have no idea. Its not really something i think about. I made a human male titan initially because titan sounded fun. I've always enjoyed the warrior class in RPGS. Then i made an awoken warlock to try out space magic. Finally i made an exo hunter to round out the bunch but i ended up deleting it and making a human hunter later because i identify with humans and awoken more than exos.
Finally, anything you'd like to tell potential subscribers?
/u/NorseFenrir We're not salty all the time! As much as we sometimes get a rep on the sub for negativity, it's born from a love of the game and a desire to see it grow and improve. Frankly, it's one of the best gaming communities I've been a part of, raising huge sums for charity, paying tribute to players who've passed away and generally just supporting each other and helping their fellow players. It really is a community rather than just a forum.
/u/MetalGilSolid Don't let the occasional salt get to you, folks, at the end of the day, we're here to help and to talk about all things Destiny. Stay here and you'll learn to recognize a lot of names, because truth be told, we're an actual community. (Oh, and please, read the rules. It makes everyone's lives easier. Oh, and it's Norse's birthday today, go wish him well!).
/u/MisterWoodhouse There's a reason why DTG is considered one of the best gaming communities on the site and it's not because we have awesome mods (even though we do). It's because our subscribers are incredible. We're like an enormous family. We fight, we make up, we get excited for holidays (August 14th, anyone?), and, most importantly, we help our own. I've made a lot of great friends though this subreddit, more than any other subreddit to date, and being a mod here has truly changed my life. It's a magical place... and we have alien blood too.
/u/Fuzzle_hc I don't consider myself as a redditor, I consider myself as a member of /r/DestinyTheGame. The sense of community and people willing to help each other out is blowing my mind every day and that's why I stuck around for so long.
/u/thirdegree The community here is one of the best on reddit. There's plenty of room for silly jokes, serious discussion, circlejerking, salt, and everything in between! In the end we all love the game, and that's more than enough to keep a common thread between all of us.
/u/redka243 DTG really is a fun place. One of the best things about our sub is the ability to filter content. If you love a certain type of post (guides, SGA), you can filter to see only those, or if you don't like a certain type of post (media, suggestions, etc), you can filter them out to not see those. My enjoyment and knowledge of the game has been infinitely multiplied by my enjoyment of the sub.
That's all she wrote.
