Full disclosure: not really a liberal.

People already aren't allowed to come into our country illegally and are doing so at the lowest rate ever recorded. It's not a problem worth driving the deficit up by billions of dollars, which lets be honest, is how the thing will actually get paid for, if it ever does.

Illegal immigrants use state and federal services (trains, emergency rooms, gas/electricity, etc) but they don't pay tax money.

Estimates by Americans for Legal Immigration (ALIPAC) show that American taxpayer resources worth about $125 billion are stolen by illegal immigrants.

When people move into the US legally, they are put on a tax registry, and they can contribute to society. There's nothing wrong with immigration, only illegal immigration.

Yeah, that really sounds credible.

They're designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, BTW.

Out of what you mentioned, I've sure as hell never heard of gas or electricity being a publicly funded service, public transportation costs the same no matter who uses it. Emergency rooms are a different story, but they'll try very hard to make you pay before they give you anything for free.

According to the American Immigration council, illegal immigrants do pay taxes, including sales, property and income taxes, albeit not as much as they would if they were here legally. Part of this is just because they aren't earning as much as they would if they were here legally.

Because not many people do come in illegally. The cost of a relatively small number of illegal immigrants is much less than the cost of "the wall".

There are a large number of illegal immigrants. Pew Research Center estimates that that there are about 11.3 million illegal immigrants currently living in our country.

Illegal immigrants use state services, but don't pay taxes. By making immigrants come here legally, the taxpayer base increases, and the government can decrease taxes for everyone.

We have a net negative # of people crossing over the border.

it's expensive as hell. And we're not paying for it, and Mexico has made it pretty, pretty clear that there's no way they're paying for "that fucking wall." But let's assume that America just magically got a huge inheritance from a wealthy parent and could pay for the wall. Where the hell would we put it? The U.S.-Mexico border is about 2,000 miles. As George W. Bush's Secure Fence Act demonstrated, it's kinda tricky even building a fence along a 700-mile stretch of the border. You have to build through people's property, build around geography, oh, and "waive 36 laws to build the fence, including the Endangered Species Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, and the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act," Oliver said.

Okay, so, assuming it's financially and physically possible to build this glorious wall, would the thing even work? Nope! "Nearly half of all the unauthorized migrants now living in the United States entered the country legally through a port of entry such as an airport or a border crossing point using visas they then overstayed. A wall can't stop that," Oliver said. "That's like wearing a condom to protect from head lice. You could do that. But that's not really how you keep the thing you're worried about from happening."

Other sources show how illegal immigration has cost our country billions of dollars. Frankly, I'm not going to base my opinion on a John Oliver comedy sketch.

Neither of those sources state how they arrived at their estimates for the "cost of illegal immigration".

Both sources are anti immigration lobbying groups.

Also, the idea that illegal immigrants don't pay taxes is bull shit. They go to the store for a carton of milk, sales tax. They pay rent to their landlord, a portion of that covers the property tax.
