Development Update: New release timeline

We've got an important development update from IGA this week, and we wanted to make sure the backers were the first to hear it. In short: To ensure the game meets his quality standards, IGA is bringing on additional developers and has moved his estimate for the game's release back to the first half of 2018. Here's more information, directly from IGA:

The last thing I want to do is keep our backers waiting, but after receiving such incredible support, I feel responsible for delivering the best product I possibly can. Again, I offer my sincerest apologies.

All of us on the campaign and development sides of the team are looking forward to playing the finished game as soon as we can, but as IGA says, we also want this game to be "done right the first time."

We'll continue to keep you updated on the development process every step of the way. (In fact, the next regularly scheduled update, featuring some songs and commentary from Michiru Yamane, is just about ready to go. And as IGA mentioned, you can expect more news about the development process as soon as it's available.)

Thanks again for all you've done to make such an exciting project possible.

Take your time Iga. We all want this to be as special as possible. If it requires a delay that is fine. We trust you Iga and you have our support!

No rush man. I know money is finite but please don't feel any pressure from us. We just want you to make the best game you possibly can.

We believe in you Iga! Keep up the good work, waiting is a small price to pay for a new classic :) "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad" ( Shigeru Miyamoto)

Take your time to do it right and do it without killing yourselves. Whatever problems arise, it's fine and normal. So best of luck!

    5. Carlos Oporto 25 minutes ago

This was expected. I never thought that this huge game was going to get completed in just 18 months. Keep up the great work and take your time to make a great game.

I concur with the general sentiment! Take the time you need, I would rather have a fantastic game a little later than I expected than a mediocre game rushed to production!

Take the time you need to do it right. But, do it right if you are taking the time.

So a timely Wii U version is just out of the question then, huh?

    9. Brent Taylor about 1 hour ago

I'm actually a bit relieved. I didn't want this game to be out before it was truly ready and got all the love it deserves. Everyone should remember that the initial March 2017 date was a placeholder required by Kickstarter for the original 800k project, and after raising well over 5.5 million, the game got WAY, WAY bigger. I think everyone in the know expected this, and again, I'm glad to hear the time will be put in :D

    10. Robert Hencke about 1 hour ago

Please, take the time you need to get it done to your satisfaction. :)

To Iga and all the developers I would like to say, that there is no problem, I rather wait for a wonderful game, that getting a half finish one. I waited a lot for a new game from you guys, so I can wait a little more, so keep the good work.

By outright saying 'Hey, we think it'll take longer then expected' you're doing more for your trustworthiness then releasing a crappy product, running off, or going silent. You're known as good devs, and we can be patient, don't worry about deciding to take extra time to polish it up.

Don't worry y'all, considering you've already delivered on that fine E3 demo, I trust the wait will be worth it. :)

I think it was expected to have a delay like this so I have no problem with it. My question would be, given the new release date and Wii U practically being discontinued by half 2017, can the game be on NX rather than Wii U?

Blizzard used to answer questions of release dates with "when it's done." I trust you, IGA... until you give me a reason not to.

    16. NekuroRS about 2 hours ago

That was actually expected since the complexity on guessing an initial release date, and say what that is good news, it means Iga wants to make the game as good as he can.

I believe we all want a true Iga quality game, one that we will remember forever as a legend, and delays are no issue. So far the development updates have been great, and your efforts are definitely appreciated. This game needs to go out with a BANG, so I can continue throwing money at you when sequels are announced/released!

Looking forward to the update by Yamane!

thanks for the headups, but no need to say sorry. Make the great spirit successor to my beloved SotN.

I understand but am still disappointed with this announcement. You are asking us to endure the entirely of Mighty No. 9's delays upfront with little promised in return other than a dedication to quality. More transparency into development going forward would be appreciated as well as a second demo in under a year's time, especially for console players (including consoles that are about to become obsolete).

No need to apologize on my end. If your team has the funding and the budget to do what you need to do, then by all means do it. So long as Bloodstained sticks true to its roots (and by all appearances from the E3 demo, this is the case) and what made those games so beloved and development isn't overworked and/or underfunded, I have no qualms. :)

    22. America Green about 2 hours ago

Thanks for such advanced warning! I was thinking a release by 2017 was a little over-ambitious, so this new estimated release seems much more reasonable.

I would rather wait for a good game complete than get a rush game with lots of bugs.

You take your time and thank IGA and your team. Keep up the good fight.

    24. Kevin Bender about 2 hours ago

I'm glad that the playable demo was released prior to this announcement, as it's easier to have faith in Iga and his team given how solid everything was up to that point in the demo. I'm sure that the end project will be better for it, so I'm fine with a delay as long as Iga sets our expectations for the delayed release accordingly and does it right the first time (as opposed to resorting to the almost comical string of multiple delays of MN9).

    25. Warren Rehman about 2 hours ago

Take the time you need, appreciate your dedication to quality.

    26. Derek Dean Rumpler about 2 hours ago

Do what you need to do but I hope you consider porting to other platforms and offering us options for those platforms. For example, I'd love to play this on NX. :-)

    27. Fernando Zúñiga about 2 hours ago

As long as we don't get a repeat of Mighty No.9. Please do your best.

    29. Sebastien Anchikoski about 3 hours ago

Honestly, I expected this. If you think about all the bonus content we unlocked through stretch goals, the game has increased far beyond the original estimates...(around 5 million dollars beyond :P)

I think the vast majority of backers understand why you decided to delay the release. We understand that you are passionate about this, and it seems to us that this isnt just about making a quick buck on our nostalgia. Take your time in making the game. If it allows you to improve the game and create your magnum opus, then we are willing to wait.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and The Witcher III are just two examples of games that were pushed back so the teams working on them could perfect them.

Shigeru miyamoto said "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad." So I have absolutly no problem waiting. I (we) completly thrust your judgement and your vision. Even if you delay it another time, i prefer feel that its a whole game than a rushed one.

No big surprise. I expect games to be delayed. As long as the end product rocks, more time is good.

    36. Justin about 3 hours ago

Thank you for the update on how things are progressing and I'd like to express my full support for putting quality over expediency. Take the time you need to actualize the vision presented during the kickstarter. I'll be happy to wait for that finished project :)

I'd wait till 2025 for this game

    38. Christopher Lewis about 3 hours ago

This is 100% fine with me. I'd rather wait for a finished game rather than get it earlier and be disappointed.

This post from Steve on Jan 25th explained how Kickstarter requires every project to estimate a delivery date. This "delay" is no surprise to me.

Ok. An additional 1 year plus of development time. Please make it great. And get ready to sign until your arm drops. No signature print please! Must be from your own hands. =]

I have no complaints about the delay. The Miyamoto quote others have posted is right on point, though I also like this one: "Good cooking takes time. If you are made to wait, it is to serve you better, and to please you." (Fred Brooks, The Mythical Man-Month, quoting a French restaurant menu)

I also appreciate that IGA and the team are up-front about development progress with their backers, as opposed to some Kickstarters which seem to treat pledges as nothing more than overpriced preorders...

    44. Pedro Nogueiras about 3 hours ago

Take all the time you need, I'm sure it will be a great game this way.

That's a pretty large delay, but I guess a single large delay now (fingers crossed) is better than ten small delays over the next year.

The Demo was amazing! If you need more time with it, take it. Settle on what you think would make for the best end result.

I'd love to get this game earlier. But I'd prefer, as many other seems to agree, to have a game that works and has all the love and attention Iga and crew can give.

Take your time, IGA! =) We trust you!
