So true! Absolutely brilliant point!

This isn't a question looking for advice on how to avoid street harassment...but thanks to all the advice to 'stay off the street,' 'put hair up in a ponytail,' and 'buy wired headphones,' you might consider pitching this magazine.

I don't think this post is suggesting wireless headphones are an inherently bad thing, just that as the industry evolves, it has consequences that go beyond technology. It's not resisting change, it's a discussion how those of us who go on the street, leave our hair down, and maybe even want wireless headphones navigate those side effects of a new reality and how our everyday choices are impacted or not by a shift in technology.

How exactly are headphones your first line of defense?

Catcallers strive on attention. Headphones = their passing comment isn't heard, so they don't make it.

I don't like listening to music when walking around, but I've found that sticking headphones in when walking downtown cuts down on random ass comments (white girl living in Chile, there are streets that I walk down that I literally can't avoid being harassed.)

I guess you are talking about cat calls? I always felt like headphones make you more vulnerable to a crime. A thief can sneak up on you and plan his attack if he thinks you arn't aware.

I'm talking about street harassment. It's a well-known and frequently discussed topic.

[–]brokensinc [スコア非表示]  (2子コメント)

And I'm talking crime prevention. Thieves regularly target people with headphones in and talking on their phone.

This seems like a rather specific problem that has workarounds.

But they haven't phased out wired headphones. They include wired headphones/earbuds with the iPhone 7 and they include an adaptor for 3rd party wired headphones.

Yes, I know. But as we push toward the ubiquity of cord headphones, my question is one of visibility and street harassment. Specifically: do you use visible headphones to help ward off street harassment? Would you specifically not use wireless headphones because of street harassment?

The cord may be gone but there's still two bright white pieces of plastic that will be visible in your ears.

[–]readysetrico[S] 1ポイント2ポイント  (5子コメント)

Maybe with yours, but certainly not with my hair.

[–]Flask_of_Amontillado 1ポイント2ポイント  (4子コメント)

Are you not capable of tucking your hair behind your ears or putting it into a ponytail?

[–]readysetrico[S] -2ポイント-1ポイント  (3子コメント)

Medium length and curly af? Sorry, that doesn't work. It's fun to entertain the idea of wearing my hair a specific way in order to ward off street harassment. Maybe I can change the way I dress, too!

No need to be passive aggressive. I was genuinely trying to help you with a solution.

[–]readysetrico[S] [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

So when I told you "not with my hair" but you questioned that fact and suggested my inability to tuck/ponytail it - that was meant to be helpful? No need to be passive aggressive!

This whole OP is about how you purposely accessorize to ward off street harassment, it's not a huge stretch to suggest you wear your hair differently. Or just buy a different phone

Why wouldn't you just use either the Lightning headphones (which it comes with) or the adapter that lets you use ANY headphones (which it comes with)? Since it is unlikely that Apple would remove their lightning input from their phones anytime in the future you should not worry about having to use wireless headphones. I will probably never switch to wireless headphones and enjoy that Apple has given me a DAC system in my phone, it will improve audio and be less sesceptible to interference. I was hoping your argument would have something valid in it but bottom line you will STILL will be able to use your wired headphones. So buy whatever phone you want and don't get spun up over something that has zero effect over the problem you have presented.

This isn't about the ability to purchase or use wired headphones. It's about the fact that wired headphones are a line of defense for myself and I assume many others. As one of the major phone manufacturers shifts away from them, it is a relevant point worth bringing up. Will a person always be able to find a pair of wired headphones in this world? Of course. But will this change the manufacturers we choose or how we feel moving down the street without them? Worthy of discussion.

So? Do you think bluetooth headphones are invisible? They are not.

[–]readysetrico[S] [スコア非表示]  (2子コメント)

I don't think bluetooth headphones are invisible. What's your experience with using them vs. wired headphones and street harassment?

[–]kareez [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Well wireless headphones look the same way as wired one... so the experience is exactly the same unless the cord is 5 inch thick orange rope with words "dont talk to me" written on it.

You said yourself in the OP that visible headphones are your first line of defense against street harassment. Bluetooth headphones are not all invisible. So you either think that they are invisible, or you think that the only pair you can wear with the new iPhone is the Airpods they provide. Get any of the many pairs of traditional Bluetooth headphones available on the market; no one will accidentally think you're not wearing headphones if you're walking around in these: http://i.imgur.com/fcASO2X.jpg
