You're asking in the wrong place - reddit, and most online forums in general, carry the feeling that if you're not born/raised in Manchester, or even the UK for that matter, that you're somewhat less a fan.

Not having been to OT is different than being a foreign fan - if you've never been, I sincerely recommend going at least once in your life. It's an experience you'll never forget, and it makes your connection with the team that much sweeter.

In addition, you'll meet some of the fans that are there for every match (season ticket holders, stretty end, etc.) - every encounter I've had with them (despite being a foreign fan) has always been met with positivity and warmth. They're always friendly (for the most part), and of the few conversations I've had with local fans on this exact subject - they're happy, almost proud, to have such dedicated fans the world over.

TL;DR - reddit/online forums are a cesspool for "you're not a real fan" mentality. Fuck what anyone else has to say about who you support - you know how much you love the club, and that's all that matters.

I am born and raised in Manchester and I have no problems with foreign fans one bit.

I like it when they take ok board the local rivalries as well, like that one Man Utd fan in Malaysia I think, that went to a Liverpool pre season game in his Utd top and just sat there!! 😄😄😄

I am sure they tried to make him take it off and he was like nope fuck you all!! 😄😄😄

It's all a Utd love affair man!!

I will concede, though, that I don't think I'll ever be able to properly hate specific clubs as well as a Manc (Liverpool excluded, because they have so many fans here).

I wouldn't claim to have as good an understanding of the United/City rivalry as someone who was born/bred in Manchester. Those people would've gone to school with City supporters, would've seen them after every Derby, would've had to share the city with them despite a bad result - you just can't have that kind of experience here because... well let's face it, it's City and I don't live in Saudi Arabia. No fans to be found over here!

A difficult question, some are, some aren't.

All I ask as an English fan is that other fans try their damned hardest to watch the games, and keep up with news about the club. You can't be called a "plastic" or a "glory Hunter" if you show that you know what is going on IMO.

Most of the fans in other parts of the world are very dedicated staying up late at night or even waking up early to watch matches.

[–]BaelixNemanja, whooahhoohhohhhoh 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Agreed.

Although I think more than anything else, the amount of time you've spent supporting the club is your real "claim", as it is with any other facet of life. The software developer with 30 years experience is probably more respected/carries more favor than the new-hire.

Same applies to supporters of any sport - I wouldn't claim to be on the same level as someone who's supported United for 50+ years.

I don't. As long as people invest time and feelings into watching us play, they are good in my eyes. Learn the club's history, read up about us, watch the team play, celebrate, love and cry with the rest of us.

Being stuck in a different country is not your fault but at the same time if you're a fan who's never been to Old Trafford to catch a match, you've been missing out on what I feel is a very intimate connection with the club and fans. It is understandable that financial restraints along with other reasons may not make a trip possible, but do try to save up and visit at least once. It'll be an experience you'll not forget.

I completely agree. I'm not a million miles away (from Northern Ireland) but nobody is going to convince me that supporting United is purely down to the privilege of where you happened to be born or live - or in any other aspect of life for that matter.

I've been supporting United from across this little puddle for 22 years now.

[–]theGaffer_31[S] 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Wish everyone thought that, but fuck them ,i see no reason as to why i cannot support the club.

[–]wasabicoatedSchweinsteiger 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yet I've seen them wear American sports' team gear: baseball, basketball and even American football.

[–]danmaherRooney 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Depends on your actual reason for supporting the team. Personally it was because my brother supported them so I followed suit. If you support them just because they were successful maybe you need to reevaluate it.

American here, been called a glory hunter just because I'm an American. I grew up not liking soccer and making fun of my friends that played it. My best friend growing up was dutch and was a huge supporter of United. So as an 11 year old boy I would have been a bad friend if I didn't ridicule him for the things he liked. He told me to give it one season and I would love it. We bet $10 to see if I would like it or not. His family had satellite so we were able to watch some of the games. The year was 98/99...needless to say I fell in love. I lucked out that what peaked my interest in football was one of the greatest seasons United has ever had. I have been a fan since I was 11 and have been called a glory hunter by people who have been watching for the premiere league for 3 years. So I guess what I'm trying to say is there will forever be people calling any United fans glory hunters. Doesn't matter though we support the greatest club with the greatest history IMO. Let them hate us nothing changes based on fake internet points.

I don't think foreign supporters are at all less of fans than local supporters. You have the right to support the team as much as anyone else.

However, you are not the same as a local fan. No matter how much you may support United there isn't the same ingrained connection to the club through the history and actually regularly attending games.

I'm not a local fan either despite being English so I know I don't have that same real level of connection either. Foreign fans aren't less than English fans but neither are the same as local fans.

I've was born and raised in North London, granddad was from Salford and was a die hard supporter until the day he died. I used to get called a glory hunter but that was really only at school. I think people need to just stop caring so much about it to be honest.

I get it that on online forums and stuff people are abusive if your American and have only started supporting them in recent years, but it could be that you've probably started supporting them because of our clubs global advertisement in your region over recent years.

But overall if you enjoy watching the sport and United was the first team you've picked I really wouldn't care less if I was you.

I personally don't care I take everyone at face value, you're a fan of the club. Technically you are a "Glory Hunter" but I wouldn't consider you a lesser fan. Even though I was born in Manchester I never lived there long enough, I moved to France when I was 10 and then to London when I was 13 and i've been here ever since. Even with that I know im not as connected to the club as my uncle who got me into United and has been living in Manchester for the majority of his life.

What i have noticed and it does annoy me is when fans not even exclusively foreign, though in my experience more times than not do have opinions that show they aren't English and don't really care about United being an English club. They view United as a global business almost and would love it if United had 11 foreign players as long as we are winning.

If you're emotionally invested in your clubs success, no matter where you are then you're a fan. The difference between a local and international fan is that the local fans have the privilege of seeing them in person more often.

[–]daveorMartial 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Honestly doesn't matter - I was born and raised in Manchester until I went to University in Sheffield and then took a job in London 5-6 years ago. I've been in London since and several times I've mentioned that I live in London with a Man Utd flair on /r/soccer there's been comments about being plastic and the kind attitude that's like 'oh of course a Man Utd fan from London'.
Honestly don't care and it doesn't make a difference - if your mood rises and falls on matchdays based on the outcome of our games then that's what a fan is to me.

[–]Magnehtic 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Course not. I feel that you're allowed to support any team in the world as long as you're consistent. Just happening to be born in the UK doesn't mean you aren't allowed to follow a Spanish team and vice versa. People care too much about where you're from, why do you have to live/be born close to the team you watch and support?

Last time I missed a match was three Years ago due to work, and that includes pre-season. I pay a big monthly fee so I can watch prem games in HD. Constantly buying official merchandise.

Have read 5 different biographies related to the club and watched countless documentaries.

Recently started watching the youth games when available, watch all press conferences and interviews, constantly going through news and reddit.

I'm brazilian, United is my only team apart from the Brazilian NT, and I don't give a shit if someone thinks I'm a glory Hunter or whatever.

Edit: FB is cancer, I wouldn't take it seriously
