We looked ten times better once Alli went to the #10 position. If Rooney is going to be allowed to drop that deep, just play him ahead of Dier or Henderson in the first place because we don't need all three.

Kane has been shit since the end of last season, I went to the England vs Russia game in Marseille and he was by far the worse player I've seen live. He performed like a random fan would have

Rashford is playing for the youth team but still we have brutal pace on the wings and a clunky Kane in the middle. Vardy with Sterling and Antonio would be sheer annihilation.

John Stones was higher up the pitch than Rooney was on a good number of occasions. Not Rooney's fault if he was told by Big Sam to occupy a deeper role, though you have to wonder if he was meant to be a more deep lying playmaker, why Sterling and Lallana didn't cut inside into the space more often to help him out. Kane being awful was the biggest reason why we couldn't get anything done until the 95th minute though.

He was alright. Some good diagonals to be expected and did more right than wrong, even if he didn't set anything alight.

I think he did more wrong than right simply because he spent most of the time between his two centre backs. A couple of nice passes don't excuse that.

And I don't agree that he spent "most of his time" between the two centre backs. He played on the left of a midfield three for 75% of the game and then played a deeper role to accommodate Alli when he came on, but England had the ball so much he was constantly in the Slovakia half anyway.

We had the ball so much that our centre backs were constantly in the Slovakia half. Rooney came deep far too often to be a link between defence and midfield and as a result we had no link between midfield and attack. Everything had to go out wide from deep, and then our wide players had to wait for everyone else to get themselves up the field, and by then all they could do was lump the ball in to the box. Rooney was a big part of that problem.

It was a typical Rooney performance. No different to anything he's done this season. If you think he's been playing well then it was a good performance, if you think he's been playing badly then it was a poor performance.
