I think that auto -1 we get these days, is just part of reddit's vote blurring algorithm. I think they switched it up a couple weeks ago, and now it can auto subtract one or more right off the back.

You are right, this isn't proof of a botnet itself, but it is proof that the script can be attached to a simple botnet for vote manipulation. This is just proof of massive votegaming using a script.

I think it can be equally as dangerous to underestimate their intelligence. Very little people in the real world have any idea what /sub/the_donald is and most of those that do think it is satire. I really don't think that there would be any real backlash other than a garbage shitpost storm for a day like when /sub/fatpeoplehate was banned and a nasty article from breitbart, who nobody really cares about. I just don't see reddit losing on advertising or appearing unfair. In fact I'm sure the Trump ads would remain.

I'm not under-estimating Trump supporters simply because I disagree with them. In fact, this is the first time in my 25 years as a voting-age American where I've honestly thought supporters for the other side were less intelligent than me. Sure, I've joked about it in the past but plenty of very smart people voted for Bush, Dole, Bush Jr, McCain, Romney...

Yes, it's usually tactically wise to assume your opponent is at least as intelligent as you are. In Trump's case I truly think it's more accurate to assume his American supporters are mental lightweights. The polls and stats even support it.

I doubt there's any great way to see when they started executing it, but, there might be.

1a. Find users who upvote a lot in /sub/t_d

1b. Examine the script to see what time interval between upvotes it uses.

2. Scan accounts identified in 1a for strings of upvotes with the interval identified in 1b.

3. Look for the earliest of these strings of upvotes, that's when it started to get popular among T_D users. (Identifying the actual very first implementation would involve skipping 1a and applying 2 to all Reddit accounts.)

It is crazy how far they can bury their heads in the sand. They really think that /sub/politics went towards Hillary after the convention, not because people preferred her message, but because of manipulation that needs 'balancing.' How convenient that the polls that mirrored that shift were also 'biased' and needing 'balancing.' So much denial.

Aside from automatically tagging people, this has nothing to do with RES. Banning it would break one feature (which could easily be replaced) and the rest would keep working.

Also, because RES is a client-side thing, it's pretty much impossible to ban unless reddit becomes a flash or java applet.

I think they might already have this; it could have been part of what they did with the front page algorithm a while ago. From an administration standpoint it's not necessarily a bad idea to detect wrongdoing and then instead of completely banning and hiding things, just cordon off the detected crap so it doesn't deface the public face of the site; this way the people doing the vote manipulation still feel like they're getting away with something and might not feel the need to step up the creativity of their hackery and vandalism as soon.

But I'm pretty much just talking through my hat here.

I think they have it running only during certain times of day. I've noticed while going through our moderation queue that certain submission get instantly downvoted during the middle of the night.
