For what it's worth, I want to create a space to talk about some issues that have been on my mind. All opinions are welcome.
I've noticed a dissonance between the way my friends and I talk about this season of Rupaul's Drag Race and the way the majority of this subreddit talk about it, and I find that fascinating. My major qualms are this:
1) The majority of this sub seem to take more pleasure in tearing a queen down than in building a queen up.
2) I'm concerned about this sub's level of cultural awareness.
Specifically, I am referring to the reactions expressed towards Alaska vs. Katya in the last episode. To me, Alaska was everything: during snatch game, on the runway, during the lip-synch, in the confessionals, in the werk-room. She's flawless. I don't see her as "unenthusiastic", rather, she's a boss-ass bitch and carries herself that way. She's Sigourney Weaver in Working Girl.
And I don't mean to hate on Katya, because I honestly love Katya. I'm sorry, though, but her Bjork was unoriginal, uninspired, and frankly pretty lame. Bjork is a true artist and to make jokes that are essentially "Bjork is a weirdo and we should laugh at her!" seems very basic to me. It seems like a hetero-normative attitude to "the other" and I'm not here for that (not to sound too obnoxiously tumblr).
I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed this divide between Alaska-fans and Katya-fans? Or rather, this divide between "yasss" and "ew"? Do you think this is related to age? Other factors at play?
Thoughts? Opinions? Love ya, ya fucking bitches.
