That stream was an embarrassing mess, this mediocre announcement just tops it all off. Especially shitty of them to take off Megaton edition from Steam for this new release with a ridiculous price. But at this point shitty business isn't really anything new for Gearbox.

What a shame.

Man Gearbox is really freaking scummy.

Yep. After they fucked up Colonial Marines, I refuse to buy anything from them

Do you have a link to the stream?

Found it: https://www.twitch.tv/gearboxsoftware/v/87224479

If they hadn't taken Megaton away I'd feel a bit better. It seems like a lot of people are content to shit on it, but I'd like to play a (good) new episode for DN3D with re-recorded dialogue from Jon St. John.

But really, charging $20 for this just seems weird. It would have been a better idea to do it as a big update to Megaton Edition and then put the game on sale (but not a deep a sale as usual). I'd pay $5 for such an update in a heartbeat but $20 is a bit much.

Don't know what you're referring to with the stream though (and the one below seems to just be about BL3).

Titan Quest just updated their game, kept the old game, and gave the new edition free to people who already owned Titan Quest.

Yeah I mean... For some people just having something that's been touched by Levelord is a big deal. I mean, yeah. It's a big deal. He's been out of industry, content on never doing anything ever again. I mean, maybe he lost his touch a little, maybe it's all just a name in the first place, but still. It's pretty cool.

Somethings I don't understand would be the new graphics? I mean, I guess they just mean like, hi res, and lighting stuff? What's the point of being able to switch back and forth if it's still the same sprites?

Also I'm not 100% clear if they got Jon St. John to rerecord every line, including the ones from the original game, or just do ones for the new episode? I think it's for the originals too, but not sure.

The problem is that it's providing nothing the community hasn't achieved multiple times over the past 20 years. The texture pack looks obnoxious and this just comes off as the Duke Nukem IP being a cash stream for a developer that's already on broken ice.

Actually there are some higher quality mods out there like forever2013 and a mod that actually used polygonal models!

Especially shitty of them to take off Megaton edition

Didn't I see a link in the 'leak' about this remaster that pretty much detailed how Gearbox was attempting to avoid paying royalties to someone who worked on the old version?

That's not all folks! GOG has completely forgotten what Duke Nukem is!

Exactly. Nothing they're providing couldn't have been achieved through Megaton Edition or texture mods.

Why the hell did the leak have to be true? $20 for a shitty-looking remaster with new voice lines that sound like they were recorded with absolutely no inspiration. Thanks Randy...

Well at least my leak destroyed the hype before you got excited for nothing :/

I wish they just made something like a dn3d2, like actual polygons and maybe something that can't be played on an n64.

Mentioning N64, I'd like to see the additional areas and weapons from the N64 version implemented to the PC version, It's one I remember pretty well apart from some awful random censoring, it made more sense to "save" the babes too. (But why were they changed into babies oh my god).

If I already own the Megaton Edition, whats the incentive to buy this?

To show Gearbox there's interest in a new Duke game

Who am I kidding the money would go towards Borderlands 3

There is interest in a new Duke game.

There is no interest in a Duke game created by this company of scam artists and con men.

Give ole' Duke to Devolver Digital and it would literally print money.

Flying Wild Hog would reboot Duke into justice, Interceptor Entertainment I doubt would make anything great, but at least still somewhat faithful to the original. This old Duke3D remake in CryEngine looks great by the way, damn you Gearbox.

Flying Wild Hog would be PERFECT for the job.

It would be fantastic if they eventually end up making reboots for Blood and DN3D so that we have the legendary build engine trio with glorious modern day graphics.

There was news about a Blood remake a few weeks ago.

I missed it, it seems. Who is developing it? I can't seem to find any info about it.

Aren't they though not the developer themselves, they would have to find people other than Croteam who could make a good fps crazy game which might take a while and something tells me gearbox won't be selling duke for cheap.

Devolver has a relationship with Flying Wild Hog, but you're definitely right on the 2nd part.

Worse it would probably go toward some bad licensed product's DLC.

[–]Kayy- 5

They're adding a new campaign with 8 new maps. Each map apparently has unique new music composed by Lee Jackson. They also had St. John re-record Duke's lines with higher quality equipment, I guess. I don't see much point to buying this personally...

If they had at least bought up the high resolution texture pack and included it with the game I'd be slightly less mad

The high resolution texture pack looks terrible.

As a mod release it's all well and good, but releasing something like that is laughable idea.

Now, if they had come up with a high resolution texture pack that actually looked tasteful and coherent, I'd be behind that.

I honestly hope and pray that Gearbox goes bankrupt and shuts down within the next 5 years after watching that stream. How fucking embarrassing

Kills me that duke is owned by that wank stain of a company :(

[–]Maltbrew [

Don't you mean the next 5 minutes? :P

Fuck Gearbox and all their shit games.

Megaton Edition was removed for this? Dang.

New maps, new lighting, new voice work. Is that worth another $20?

[–]Xet 16

Wait they actually removed the ability to purchase the old version? That's pretty shitty. What if you just want to buy and play it in its original form?

You can't buy Megaton edition anymore, nor can you buy the original version of Duke Nukem 3D (which I think was removed even earlier, since Megaton includes it anyway along with the upgraded voxel-models version).

This new release is basically designed to replace Megaton edition; what isn't clear at the moment is whether or not the expansion packs are included (Duke it out in DC, Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach, and Duke: Nuclear Winter) which were all included in the Megaton edition. It doesn't seem like they are included, which sucks - it doesn't explicitly say they aren't included but it doesn't say they are, either.

This new version does let you play the original form of the original game though.

More expensive with less content than the Megaton Edition, rips off the EDuke32 Polymer renderer, marketed as a 'remaster' when the only thing new is some light points, Jon St. John sounds bored out of his mind, and they continue to market it with their terrible attempts at /comedy/. Go and look at http://www.dukenukem.com/ and scroll to the bottom where it says in big letters 'I WANT THE D - PRE-ORDER NOW!'. They're clearly continuing to drag this franchise through the mud.

Surely I can't be the only person who remembers Duke in the 90s through to the early 2000s when he was the 'Ultimate Alien Ass-Kicker' and 'babes' and comedy were only small elements of the franchise before Pitchford blew it out of proportion with Duke Nukem Forever, which I'll have to say before anyone calls me out and say it was 3D Realms work - which it wasn't, was actually written by two inexperienced writers around the most completed parts of the game under the direction of Gearbox Software and Randy Pitchford in order to shovel the game out as quickly as they could from the cobbled together elements of what 3D Realms were working on that were the most complete, they never finished the game they just threw together what was done.

Anyone remember the original Duke3D, Zero Hour, Time To Kill, Manhattan Project when Duke was a bad-ass first and the tongue in cheek elements and the one-liners were supplementary to that? What about the E3 2001 trailer for Duke Nukem Forever that looked absolutely bad-ass? I miss that Duke.

The positives here are: new maps by Levelord/Allen Blum, new music by Lee Jackson, and uh, that's it..I'll pick it up on sale because I'm interested in the new maps but if you watched the PAX live stream Randy basically talked out of his ass the entire time 'WE GOT THE OLD DUKE TEAM BACK!' Oh, you did?! Where's Todd Replogle? Keith Schuler? Chuck Jones? George Broussard? Scott Miller? Fuck off, Randy. You have Allen Blum who already works for you anyway, Levelord - who I'm actually surprised you got to return as he's a fantastic level designer, Lee Jackson - who's a great music composer but wasn't the sole person who did the sound for the game, and one map that was sort of designed by Pitchford himself. You've got four people, two of which work for Gearbox, out of over a dozen. The maps will be good for sure as they've got the talent behind them, but it's still under the direction of someone who has no idea how the franchise worked in the past and who seemingly basses everything off of the Balls of Steel ventrillo harassment video as far as direction for the franchise and character go.

If they made a real effort they would have put out a compilation including the new episode in addition to the console titles that never made their way to any other platforms that they have the rights to, 3D Realms/Interceptor had plans to port them over even going as far as saying they had recovered the source code for Time To Kill, and that they had all the rights to the games. Gearbox could have even done a remake in UE4, but no. We get a re-release with LESS content than the previous releases, at $20 with a new episode.

Straight up I'm excited for the new maps, I really am, because Levelord and Allen Blum are great level designers. Hell, even supported by tracks by Lee Jackson! Cool! But really, take a step back and have a little perspective. The biggest criticisms to Duke Nukem Forever were the direction the franchise went in and how the character changed into a dick joke spouting jackass. Duke Nukem can still be something cool, but under the direction of Pitchford I have my doubts. Give it to a group of fans that have the passion, the EDuke32 guys have their own company called Voidpoint and I hear that a couple of them are even working on that FPS prequel to Bombshell in the BUILD engine - give it to them! Why not let Interceptor finish their UE3 remake of Duke Nukem 3D? They've been drooling over the franchise for ages and even bought out 3D Realms! Work on it yourselves with the old heads of 3DR as advisers or producers to help direct the character! Just do something that isn't continuing to throw the franchise over a barrel and destroy it's former glory because that's exactly what's happening. You're retroactively destroying the great games that were released in the past.

Will get this re-release on sale, oh by the way thanks for taking down Megaton Edition and the releases on GoG and releasing this for double the price with less content. Maybe you could give the former owners a discount or something, that'd show you care a little bit. Oh, and if anyone was wondering why Pitchford keeps claiming he was part of the original team his actual contribution was working on the Plutonium Pak expansion at the small capacity of assisting on the development on a couple of maps - he never designed anything and left after about a year. You know who else was 'part of the original team'? The janitor who worked there and the guy that delivered packages. So, basically, he's full of shit. Bring back the real Duke.

Every time some new Duke-related bit of media comes out, it's always garbage. I wish these Duke refreshes would focus on the thing that made the original D3D so great — the game design — as opposed to Duke's vulgarity. I miss the crazy weapons, the varied enemy roster, the twisting hub-style maps, the abundant secrets, the terrifying boss and miniboss fights. It was the perfect 90's shooter. Give the franchise to someone like Flying Wild Hog or Interceptor and let them run with it.

At least some of the original team is back with this update. But it's still just a level pack for a 20-year-old game.

I'd suggest EVERYBODY to spend your money elsewhere, such as Shadow Warrior 2 which releases 2 days after this money grubbing scheme.

[–]Maltbrew [

The problem is though, you shouldn't have to comment this! People should be smart enough to either pirate this just to check it out or not at all because it's like you said, a money grubbing scheme.

People should've been wary of Gearbox the second they bought the Duke IP and pushed DN Forever once more.

Though personally for me the warning lights flashed a little earlier since I really didn't like Borderlands.

[–]Bamith 7

This is kind of stupid for the most part... Very terribly done. Gearbox is a bit of a train wreck when it comes to managing it's community, this was a potential chance for them to look good in front of people rather than be "Those guys that fucked up the Aliens game and lied to everyone".

If they were going to take the Megaton edition off Steam and GoG, still be nicer to keep it for posterity, they should have waited until this game released, kept to at least close to the same price, AND made this completely free for people who already own the Megaton edition, something like how Titan Quest recently did. That would have netted them MAJOR PR points.

...Wow. This just keeps getting better and better, isn't it?
