Jesus. I get the appeal of letting you zoom in, regarding a game like this, but why have the characters be scared? It's gross enough as is, so why add the addendum that the girls feel violated and threatened? The hell were they thinking?
[–]Tendehka[S] 27 points28 points29 points  (2 children)
The only thing I can think of is that whole "all women are innocent creatures who have no concept of sex" mentality that seems prevalent in Japanese products. And that's probably just me dealing in stereotypes while grasping at straws.
[–]AngryDM 9 points10 points11 points  (0 children)
"NYAAAAH! Ya-yamate!"
Creeps into that shit are afraid of women who actually like sex and consent to it.
[–]gogo_goblinGay fish 4 points5 points6 points  (0 children)
Is that why all the DOA gals just sort of awkwardly squirm like impatient toddlers?
[–]Heatth 15 points16 points17 points  (0 children)
My understanding is that Japan have a particularly unhealthy attitude towards sex. I believe Japanese women feel the need to act as if they don't want intimacy/sex even when they do. Basically a very widespread "no means yes" mentality.
[–]AngryDM 21 points22 points23 points  (10 children)
They don't just want wish-fulfillment VR sexbots.
They want victims.
[–]VogonPoetryLoverWarriors of Virtue Signalling 17 points18 points19 points  (8 children)

[–]AngryDM 26 points27 points28 points  (4 children)
Few things creep me out on Reddit more than "venting theory". I assume this shitty VR product insists all the girls are of legal age, but it definitely won't stop there.
Creeping on simulated non-consenting women and normalizing it through a "game" is creepy enough. But whenever some front-page Redditeur talks about how this "vents" their impulses and is a good thing, well, you can imagine how often I've seen the same thing said about child porn on Reddit.
[–]hailhydrofoil 12 points13 points14 points  (0 children)
As someone who is into to rape play, the venting theory is bullshit. If I haven't "performed" in a while I don't get the urge to suddenly assault someone. I just get a desire to "perform". It's honestly like any other desire really. The only reason people make up excuses like venting theory is because they're ashamed of their own kinks. As long as everyone is consenting and you're not hurting anyone you can get your freak on.
[–]Robjec 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
I would kind of doubt that this insists all the girls are of legal age, since their games to date have made it very clear that they are not. (anyone who isnn't legal just has their age removed/changed in English ports but never in the originals :p)
[–]AngryDM 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
I recall the earlier arcade versions years back before the beach volleyball shit started.
I swear they looked like adults back then.
[–]blingyhawk 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
I asked this once before in the same thread is there in origin to this meme.
[–]GoldPilot(⌐■_■) 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
It's basically a deconstruction of the idea that genuinely creepy behaviors and conversations are just "boys being boys."
Things like saying "I can't wait until she's 18" regarding an underage girl in a swimsuit. Gross comments and jokes and behaviors.
I guess at some point someone called it "healthy male sexuality," either unironically or as a joke, and the jape stuck.
[–]GoldPilot(⌐■_■) 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
That's a horrifying thought. I think I need an abyss staring break for today.
[–]hailhydrofoil 3 points4 points5 points  (1 child)
As someone into rape play, I find the appeal in the power and control you have over someone. Then there is also a certain rush you get when you play the bad guy. It's kinda like when you build a faulty rollercoaster on purpose in Rollercoaster Tycoon so you can see everyone fall to their deaths.
[–]GoldPilot(⌐■_■) 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Hm. I suppose that's fair.
[–]idolminds 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
I don't know how true this is, but if the girls were into it and encouraging the viewer then it would probably be considered more pornographic which would prevent them from releasing on consoles.
[–]AngryDM 7 points8 points9 points  (0 children)
What a fucked state of things that is: if the fictionalized waifus seem to enjoy the attention that's pornographic, but encouraging creeping and stalking them and making them visibly uncomfortable is totally OK!
[–]PinkamenarchyAsa B. Lackman -1 points0 points1 point  (9 children)
Because its not real.
[–]GoldPilot(⌐■_■) 6 points7 points8 points  (8 children)
OH. Well this changes things.
Guys. Games aren't real. We can all go home. Criticism is meaningless. For years, it's been defended as real, but it ain't, so we're all good, yo.
[–]PinkamenarchyAsa B. Lackman comment score below threshold-11 points-10 points-9 points  (7 children)
It isnt real. Things don't have to be real. Sometimes we need to have fake shit that has shit that doesnt or shouldnt happen in real life in video games as escapism and stuff.
[–]GoldPilot(⌐■_■) 10 points11 points12 points  (5 children)
That doesn't excuse it from appraisal and critique. Reality isn't equivalent to merit. Ideology isn't strictly "real," but it effects how we live and act.
If we shy away from analyzing escapism on the grounds that characters and actions aren't real, then not only do we lose our ability to thumbs down problematic works, but we devalue our enjoyment of the spectacular.
Sorry for being rude, but the argument you're making isn't new, nor is it particularly sound. Can you honestly say a game has never troubled you or excited your imagination, on the grounds that it's a work of fiction?
[–]PinkamenarchyAsa B. Lackman comment score below threshold-7 points-6 points-5 points  (4 children)
I have liked video games, yes. But people play games to do things that they can't do in real life. That's why violent video games exist, and the US isn't Mad Max.
[–]GoldPilot(⌐■_■) 9 points10 points11 points  (3 children)
I'm not arguing that violent video-games make people violent, nor am I arguing that a video-game featuring sexual harassment will cause sexual harassment.
I'm saying that it's very troubling to see a AAA games studio prioritizing the addition of ogling unwilling women via a virtual reality headset, and the merits of that artistic decision should be openly discussed.
To say "it isn't real" adds nothing. It's cynical, and in the grand scheme of things, it's rather intellectually dishonest.
Nothing is "just" anything, and any creative work should be up for discussion. If you want to defend Dead or Alive Xtreme 3's inclusion of the VR mechanic, then I'm all ears. But frankly, dismissing it on the grounds of being "fake" isn't even worth discussion.
[–]adwzr3 0 points1 point2 points  (2 children)
I'm saying that it's very troubling to see a AAA games studio prioritizing the addition of violently beating a buy with a bat via a virtual reality headset, and the merits of that artistic decision should be openly discussed.
[–]Hashmircould've been getting cucked on the moon by now 3 points4 points5 points  (1 child)
Sure, why not? Assuming you have an actual example in mind and aren't just throwing out hypotheticals in a woefully misguided attempt at catching people in some sort of hypocrisy, a major studio's prioritization of visceral violence as a new experience enabled by VR technology absolutely warrants discussion.
So, do you actually intend to start that discussion, as the author of the linked Kotaku article has done for DoAX3, or are you just pretending to care so you can act like the only reason we're talking about depictions of nonconsensual sexualization is that we're, like, total prudes?
[–]adwzr3 -1 points0 points1 point  (0 children)
There is only one sentence in this entire comment with only three fucking words that I couldn't have responded with "your words not mine" in response to a comment of my mine which didn't even contain any opinions what so ever. It simply made analogy. WTF
Okay so I'll respond to the only sentence that wasn't completely loaded with bullshit in your comment
Sure, Why Not?
That's fine. But why does this sub spend far far more time with criticizing games with sexy content as opposed to game with violent content? Games with violent content is much more widespread
[–]tracertong322 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Yes, but we learn from games just like we learn from stories and television and movies and everything else wetheryou think you're learning from them or not. I don't believe that products like this should be banned but they should be criticized.
[–]flammabled 17 points18 points19 points  (5 children)
I got a month ban from GAF for arguing the game was for jerking off in a thread.
having it turn into a literal rape sim is strangely vindicating.
No wait, fucking disgusting
On posting that to GAF, it was followed by a load of people defending it, saying it's not assault (amongst others agreeing)
[–]RhaganaDoomslayerTit Ninja 7 points8 points9 points  (2 children)

I have read that thread.
Someone with an anime avatar has made a literal and unironic "baka gaijin you wouldn't understand" post and no one called them out on it: for a moment I thought I had time traveled back to 2004 or something.

[–]AngryDM 11 points12 points13 points  (2 children)
Expect heaps and heaps of sexual harassment and outright sexual assault from the first multiplayer VR offerings, as influenced and preceded by this garbage.
[–]RhaganaDoomslayerTit Ninja 11 points12 points13 points  (1 child)
You mean like this, where in order to get the girl who's blocking you from making baskets is to throw basketballs at her face, breasts, and vagina!? And bonus, the player can - of course - grope her. And look how she responds to that.
[–]AngryDM 7 points8 points9 points  (0 children)
Riskiest click of the day.
Still, thank god for Jim.
[–]KingWumpus 5 points6 points7 points  (6 children)
What I find really weird and off-putting about all this is that my only first-hand experience with the franchise is the 2006 movie and I genuinely, unashamedly think it's a good movie. It's shallow and pandering, yes, but it had a not-serious tone and energy to it that carried it. All the characters felt like they can and will beat the shit out of anybody that gets in their personal space. Not only that, they all had distinct personalities and motivations. The snippets I saw from Dead or Alive V seemed to suggest that is how the series usually is.
Seeing that get turned into this weird thing where all the women act the same, mostly look the same, and are giving all the body language of disgust and discomfort without taking any action to stop the player from violating their personal space is heartbreaking.
[–]Tendehka[S] 4 points5 points6 points  (5 children)
Dead or Alive is the fighting game (that I think is reasonably defunct?). Dead or Alive Xtreme is the pandering boobysim.
[–]KingWumpus 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
I know it's a spinoff, but that doesn't really excuse them doing a total 180 on the characters.
[–]P--S 1 point2 points3 points  (2 children)
Yeah, it's still around. DoA5 Last Round is the current revision, with both a retail version (which you can find for less than $19.99) and a free-to-play version. There's plenty of DLC costumes, and one of the last season passes was $92.99. Yes, ninety two dollars and ninety nine cents.
Also, Tomonobu Itagaki, the original creator of the series, left Team Ninja some time ago and had no input on the latest versions.
[–]Tendehka[S] 1 point2 points3 points  (1 child)
Good to know. And that's ridiculous- I very passively follow the FGC, and I can't remember the last time I heard about the series.
[–]Robjec 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
well since they made a fighting game where one of their selling points was you can control peoples boobs, it ummm didn't take as well for most gamers. Turns out people care more about the fighting aspect of their fighting games.

I have fantasies. What man doesn't? And some of them are definitely "Sexually confident female character as written by a horny man" fantasies.
However, I can confidently say that in NONE of them, not one, is the female scared or uncomfortable. Number one because it's just not appealing and number two because that's fucking disturbing. I just don't understand this type of fantasy. Well, I do, but I don't understand how the people who have it sleep at night.

I dunno, frankly these days I'm beginning to think that maybe we'd all just be better off if we stayed out of each other's way and just keep to ourselves.
And yet you're saying it's bad to have a sexual fantasy wherein I keep to myself.
        Little bit contradictory there.
[–]IrishishThe social justice is coming from INSIDE THE HOUSE 6 points7 points8 points  (0 children)
I wildly disagree with your take on sex and overpopulation and fantasies being "bad" and originally clicked "reply" just to snarkily argue with you, but...
I personally feel like a morally better person after reducing my interactions with other people even if it's left me depressed and hating myself all the time.
...now I just wanna know if you're okay. Why has reducing your interactions with people made you morally better? What benefit is there to an action that leaves you sad and angry at yourself?
        [–]Meedina☭☭Cultural Marxist☭☭ 6 points7 points8 points  (0 children)
There's no overpopulation problem we have more than enough food to feed everyone since half of what we produce is thrown in the garbadge. Same goes for polution if america and china lived like ethiopia we wouldn't have this issue.
The problem is not that there's too many people, in fact first world countries need immigration to keep afloat because of its aging population and low birthrates.
So we don't have an overpopulation problem we have a wealth distribution problem, all the ressources belong to a few richs and these rich people to protect their interest hire lobbyists to continue to lobby for industries that destroy our planet.
Honestly there's no shame in being asexual but telling people that their sexual attraction is "gross" comes out douchy.

        [–]AngryDM -1 points0 points1 point  (2 children)
You aren't directly affected, don't have to run the risk of being creeped on in real-life, so consumer products that normalize that behavior are not your concern.
Thus you got yours. You can successfully not care. Congratulations.
        [–]gogo_goblinGay fish 1 point2 points3 points  (1 child)
What makes you think I'm not creeped on in real life? Like, I had to quit my last job due to sexual harassment.
And none of use are directly affected by a bunch of emotionally stunted troglodytes jerking themselves raw to infantilized vr puppets (in the privacy of their own lairs), nor can we stop them from doing it, so why get so invested?
        [–]AngryDM -1 points0 points1 point  (0 children)
