Waterproof Testing Noke U-lock
Hello everyone. It's been a little while since our last update and we thought you might like to know what we've been working on. As you know, the first round of tooling completed a few weeks ago. This allows us to torture test the design and make some tweaks to the tooling so we end up with perfect parts and a perfect finished product.
Designing a product on the computer is precise and exact. The final product tends to reflect what's on the computer, but the first tooled parts often don't quite match that perfection. If you haven't been involved in the progression from T1 tools to final tools, you may not know what's involved in that process. I'll give a simple explanation here.
If the drawing on the computer is for a flat plastic part, the steel tool will be created with a void in the shape of the flat plastic part. Pretty obvious. The tool is then put into an injection molding machine to make its first part. This sample is referred to as the T0 or T1 sample. The next sample is called the T2 sample, etc. It can often take a few samples before the part is perfect.
To make this part in the tool, plastic is heated, injected into the mold under very high pressure, then it is cooled and removed from the injection molding machine. In a perfect world, the part is in the exact same shape as it is in the computer model. In the real world, the way the plastic is heated and flows into the void and subsequently cooled results in a slightly imperfect finished shape. To fix the imperfection, the tool can be changed by altering the size of the void in strategic areas, or by changing the texture of the mold and resulting part, moving injection points, etc. All of these things take some time to design, tool, and test again.
This same process occurs on the seals and gaskets as well. Once the parts are near perfect, they are assembled so waterproof testing can begin. We started this a few weeks ago. As with the rest of the tooling process, some tweaks are required. As an example, on the computer, when we put screws into a flat edge with a gasket between two parts, everything is perfect. But, in the real world, where there is tightness right around two screws, there may be a slight relief between the two screws resulting in an area where water can sneak its way inside. We make more slight alterations to the tooling until everything seals perfectly each and every time. It's a tedious process but it's absolutely necessary to ensure a product that will withstand the elements.
I've spliced together some video of the testing to give you a sense for how this works. To be sure the seal is as strong as possible, we don't put our parts in water to see if water gets inside. That's actually pretty easy to accomplish. It is how the final product is tested by the ratings agencies, but it is not as as foolproof as the testing we are doing. We test by assembling everything then pumping air inside the part while it is submerged in water. If we see bubbles, we know where to improve the seal. The part is not ready until we can pump a few pounds of air pressure inside the part without bubbles appearing.
Take a look at the video to see what this testing looks like as well as a test of the locking assembly.
We are about done now and will begin getting all the parts together so we can start assembly in a few more weeks. It's getting very exciting. Thanks again for all your patience and support.
Thanks,
The Noke Team

We will be providing an update within the next few days, we appreciate your patience. Some of you have expressed wanting to get a refund, we're sorry if you're no longer able to wait for the U-Lock but we understand. If you email us at support@noke.com we can get you taken care of.
Stay tuned for the update. Thank you all.

Be taken for a ride ?
Peter Binner on August 21
As last update is months ahead - any valid expectation of delivery timelines?
Bart Driessen on August 17
I'm looking really forward to receive the lock. I think we can clearly see now that you had a problem managing this project. I'm not going for a refund, but I think receiving something extra in our packages would be really good compensation for the waiting.
FŪZ Designs Creator on August 16
Jorgen, I promise we are close to getting this in your hands. And our Kickstarter backers will be receiving this first before any of our website pre-orders. Mass production should be smooth since we made sure all the parts are 100%. Thank you very much for being optimistic and patient.
Jørgen Frøysadal on August 15
Love the the feeling of "it will arrive soon" I get from reading your updates - keep it up!
Luckily there is no such thing as an end to a bike season - gonna put the lock to the test of Norwegian winters :-D
FŪZ Designs Creator on August 12
Bjorn & Hiten, the product will be completed this year. I apologize that you has lost faith in us delivering a product, but this is just not the case. The U-Lock will be completed and there is no "giving up", I promise. If you can no longer wait for the U-Lock please contact us at support@noke.com and we can provide a refund to you.
We do thank you for being patient up to this point, along with the other thousands of backers. We hope that you will love the U-Lock once you receive it. We are extremely close to completing this campaign.
Hiten Dalal on August 9
Noke Team, as frustrated backers, can you give us an estimate when this item will ship? Your updates are fine, but they don't address the ship date. We need to know a date we can count on. We already lost this bike season. Are we going to get the locks in 2016? This is extremely disappointing.
Bjorn Andersen on August 9
Guys, you have had 16 months to get this ready. If you can't deliver the product in 16 months, I'm beginning to doubt that you can do it in 18, 20, or 24 months. Or ever. Is there a final deadline for giving up and repaying funds?

Remi and Jean, There is no bad news to give. My CEO is currently in China making sure this development is moving forward and mass production is smooth. Thank you for your patience. Once he is back I'm positive we'll have a solid update to give.
Josh, we will be sending out another survey once we start mass production to gather any updates addresses and provide a way to get more locks at our Kickstarter pricing.
Jean Pierre Kellams on July 30
As the delays pile up, the lack of communication is reflecting poorly on your company. To be more blunt, if you are afraid of giving us bad news, the silence is bad enough.
Josh Webb on July 27
You mentioned sending out a new survey, as shipping time approaches. Will that survey allow us to purchase more add-ons, at the same (or better ;-)) discount as before?
Rémi Crisp Monier on July 25
7 weeks laters... No more news!! WTF is your problem??
i think your project is a dream, it will never finalized!
what do we do? wait 1 year again?
i'm really hungry dude..

Hi Noke Team,
you know, it has been another month since your last update. Please, don't keep us hanging - we're trying hard to go this way with you ;-) But we are all eager to get the lock soon, this bike season is soon over ^^
Cheers,
Jan.

Brian, your fob will ship with your U-Lock and any other add-ons you have.
Espen, we will be sending out a new survey but you can also email us at support@noke.com with your new shipping address. Thank you
Espen Bago on July 11
I'll be moving to a new adress (same city) this weekend, and therefore need to update the shipping address for the lock+fob - where can I update this?
Brian Catton on July 6
I ordered a fob with my u-lock, will it ship at the same time as the lock?
FŪZ Designs Creator on June 24
Brian, I apologize this was not done already! We will get the shipment split for you and get your padlock shipped out. I will follow up with you the beginning of next week. Thank you.
Brian Van Peski on June 21
If we ordered Noke padlocks as add-ons, are those going to ship to us before the u-lock? I'd love to use the padlock now instead of having to wait until it ships alongside the u-lock.
FŪZ Designs Creator on June 14
Wolfgang, we definitely will. There will be various tests done on the Noke U-Lock. Just to avoid any confusion however, the Noke U-Lock is not supposed to be "water proof" but rather water resistance. This doesn't mean that it will fail during any type of weather, but we would not recommending fully submersing the Noke U-Lock.
Our padlock gained an IP66 rating. Which means that dust cannot get into the lock and you can take a high pressure water sprayer to it at all angles. We want the same, if not higher rating for our U-Lock.
Our locks will come with 1-year manufacture warranty. If the lock fails because of weather, we will get you taken care of.

Good queries Wolfgang G.

Hi FÜZ Designs,
I hope you also do other tests to verify if it is waterproof.
The pressure test you did has a major flaw: the compressed air presses the gaskets against their housing, so they make a good fit. If you remove the pressure from the inside, they might not snuggle into these anymore, and some water might leak in.
Water can also creep in very slowly. You must throw it in the water for some days and then open it and see if there is any moisture inside, using these liquid contact indicators (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_contact_indicator).
Also you need to test more than one production sample.
Just in case: If the lock stops working because of water damage, and I can't open it anymore, what could I do? And what will you do?
FŪZ Designs Creator on June 9
Karlheinz, thank you for the feedback. As it gets closer to the end of the month we should have more solid dates in regards to when the first batch will be completed, how many will be made in each batch, and when we can begin shipping.
We do want to make one thing clear: We will be shipping to all of our Kickstarter backers first before anyone else gets a U-Lock.
As a lot of you know, we have been taking pre-orders on our site for some time now. We made the mistake of attempting to send out all of our Kickstarter and Pre-orders at the same time on the Padlock campaign and honestly, it was a mess. We will not be making this same mistake twice so I promise the shipping will be a much smoother and painless process. We'll be able to address mis-shipments/returned deliveries sooner and make sure you're taken care of.
Another issue that we had was where backers would move but we never got an updated address, the padlock was shipped to the wrong address and it caused issues. To remedy this, we will be sending out a NEW backerkit survey to make sure we have all backers up to date address and U-Lock choices.
Again, if you have any questions whatsoever please email us at support@noke.com
Thank you again.

Thanks for your comment and clarification on the expected shipping date, Noke team. I, personally, am happy with receving the best possible lock later than I wanted.

Hello Everyone. Thank you for your patience in waiting for the U-Lock. We understand that sometimes it can be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but we are almost done with the project.
We also understand that some of our backers are upset over the delay in shipping, while other backers are fine with the delay because of the benefits that come with the improvements made. These decision to postpone shipping to make a change are never easy because it's a double edged sword. I'm sure if you were in our shoes, you would have made the same decisions.
Why do we make these decisions? Because we care about our backers and our customers. We could have release this lock months ago as it was. Then made the improvements to release an updated and improved U-lock around this time. Since we wanted all of our customers, especially our backers to receive something worth their pledge, we decided to make the improvements and postpone delivery.
In regards to shipping times we are not going to estimate at this time. As you can see from previous estimates it created a false sense of promise and expectations. We want to avoid any frustration by saying it will be released on X date when it may not be released on X date.
As the update states, "We are about done now and will begin getting all the parts together so we can start assembly in a few more weeks." We are planned to begin mass production towards the end of this month and all of you will be receiving your U-Locks shortly. There are no more delays.
Thank you again for your patience and understanding. Please let us know if you have any questions by emailing us at support@noke.com.
Bob McDougall on June 8
Agree with others who commented about the lack of info included in this update! WHEN are you shipping this product? Can you at least address the elephant in the room and talk about delivery?
Joris Aerts on June 8
How is this considered an update?! This could be a wikipedia update on generic tooling...
"We are about done now and will begin getting all the parts together so we can start assembly in a few more weeks." What does that mean? A few more weeks? And than how many more weeks before final testing can start? and than packaging can start? And then preparing for shipping? and than shipping?
I have been very patient and I understand that delays are more the rule than exception at kickstarter but at least be transparent instead of these pieces of text that don't tell us anything.
Anna Borzak on June 8
I's also would love to know when we receive this lock. It was a gift for my brother's birthday...which was well a YEAR AGO!!! This is really irritating. I would love to getmy money back!

It's great to have a detailed update like this! But you forgot the most important part for us : the updated timeline! When are we gonna receive the product?
Nicholas Payton on June 7
Good Show! I appreciate seeing a bit of what is going on internally and appreciate the extent to which you are verifying and honing this hardware. Backing Kickstarter projects is, for me, almost as much about seeing things I believe should exist become real as it is actually owing those things. I am not going to be making a bike lock any time soon, so you get to provide that vicarious satisfaction in having a thing done right. Keep the data coming, it is appreciated.
Robert Carey on June 7
Your latest update and video, was it done for your backers or for YOU ? The update didn't really tell us much, except what we already know.... We don't have a lock, it's long overdue, and we really have no idea of when it might show up. Your lock is your dream, that we bought into..... And that's all it is at this point... a dream.
Joe Areejunthawat on June 7
its my right decision to make a refund :]
Tim Sandifer on June 7
This has taken too long to get the product finished and out. I'm concerned we have a looser on our hands! I don't feel very smart for backing this product.....
