I'm trying to place the voice actor. Is it possible that it's David Gant, the guy that voiced Aldia? Hard to tell, because his VA in DS2 had a lot of weird modulation to it.

He also did Oswald of Carim. I'm listening to both to see if it sounds like there's a connection.

EDIT: Listened to a bunch of Oswald and Aldia. I don't think it's him. David Gant sort of has this characteristic "lift" to his voice on a lot of words that's missing from anything said in the trailer. Listen to how he says "assistance" in this clip: https://youtu.be/nxtfnIOx0k4?t=54

Either way, I'm really hoping Aldia makes an appearance. He's one of the most interesting characters in Souls (and definitely the most interesting from DS2).

Voice actor sounds like Ludleth.

What if the Painted world and Drangleic are the same place. Both have crow people and bad weather.

His voice reminds me of the poor soul that introduced Ludwig the Accursed, listening to the trailer and the intro for Ludwig makes them sound similar but I'm not 100% certain.

Pretty sure it's Ingward

[–]ChettlarWalmart. Lose Souls. Die better. 4

Ingward's is way more high pitched and twingy

I was thinking the trailer really reminded me of Aldia's keep & that forlorn mention ugh. Really hoping he's involved, the hype is real.

inb4 he's the final boss

Irks me that you imply links based on the use of the word forlorn... It's a normal English word. It's like... If one of the characters said "that Greirat fellow sure is mild-mannered " and people started saying "omg Greirat and Pate are related! " Know what I mean?

It's not just the word forlorn...if you watch the video there's the musical connection at the exact moment he says it.

Also, the Forlorn armor set in DS2 is all about the fact that they don't have a home.

Now they drift into other worlds, ever in search of a home. But without self, one has neither beginning nor end, and so the Forlorn have only to wander.

And in the trailer:

If you are like us, another forlorn soul, with no place to call your own...

It's not crazy to see a connection.

Really good point that I didn't think of.

"unkindle one, if you're like us, another forlorn soul with no place to call your own, than show mylady flame"

I'm sure this is a clear hint to the painted world, although i don't get the flame part. Maybe i just missunderstood this line.

Is it ludleth's voice? I wasn't sure. But if it is it could be related to a firekeeper who's champion never linked the flame, a la dark firelink. Suuuuuuper speculative.

[–]MoarDakkaGoodSirA proper moundin'. 0

Thought it looked like she was frozen, or behind an ice wall.

You've still made no connection that doesn't rely entirely on the word forlorn. Forlorn and "no place to call your own" are practically synonymous. It's as redundant as saying "you sad soul, you're really unhappy"

The Forlorn Soul stuff is a fairly obvious reference to the Corvians, who are always described as "Forlorn souls guided by heretical storytellers."

But that is in itself somewhat of an Aldia connection, since the Sable Church seems to worship Velka and has both a philosophy similar to Aldia's and turns people into weird root-monsters filled with black flame similar to Aldia.

The Sable Church's philosophy is more in-line with Vendrick's ideals. Vendrick believed that a true monarch should embrace Light and Dark while Aldia wished to renounce both.

For what it's worth, the Corvians are very strongly implied to be tied to the Painted World and Priscilla. If the Painted World is where things frightening/dangerous to the gods are locked away, it's not unreasonable to think Aldia could be put there as well.

How would you even get him there?

[–]Yusaris_of_Londor 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

He's tied to the flame, so he can appear at any place with a bonfire.

Same way Priscilla, the undead dragon and the crow demons ended up there, I guess. The mechanics by which Priscilla was locked away were never explained, just that she was and why.

Speculation used as evidence. Only actual reference to canon is the quote... Not convincing

I can provide you some more evidence if you like. What part are you disputing, the connection of the Sable Church to Aldia, the Sable Church to the Corvians or the Corvians to the DLC?

Sable church to just about anything because the only characters having come from Londor are Yuria and the pilgrims. Pus of man to aldia because they are not tree-like at all... And there's no black flame to be seen. The sable church and the corvians might have a connection if we baselessly assume their heretical faith is that which the sable church preaches.

? I didn't connect the Pus of Men to Aldia, I connected the Pilgrim Butterflies, which are yes, a flying mass of roots filled with Black flame, like Aldia.

And the Sable Church probably worships Velka because Yuria's set is modelled after a raven.

Also we have a tree hollow (IE, a partly-transformed Pilgrim) in this screenshot in the DLC:

http://assets.rpgsite.net/images/images/000/048/121/original/DarkSouls3DLC4_(1).jpg

Yes but those are everywhere in the base game. Look around the high wall bonfire.

They're only in Lothric, where the hollow pilgrims are going.

Partly transformed pilgrim my ass. The pilgrim butterflies don't resemble roots at all, they're fleshy. And the conclusion that the sable church worships Velka is so baseless I actually laughed out loud. Jumping to conclusions on the legs of a cricket, my friend.

Sorry, but the way the branches on all the hollow trees point directly up is way too similar to the Pilgrim Butterflies for it to be a coincidence.

I do love how you don't actually try to dispute the Velka-Sable Church connection. Maybe you could try actually explaining why Yuria would wear robes designed after a crow? Especially since the Sable Church has access to Vow of Silence, which was very specifically a Velka miracle.

The Sable Church has strong canonically confirmed ties to Kaathe. There would have to be a strong connection between Kaathe and Velka. If there were any connection between Kaathe and Velka, we'd know by now. In addition, a connection to crows does not necessarily imply a link to Velka. We trade items with crows in every game, for example.

Did you watch the video OP linked? There might be other links to the forlorn besides just the word.

When I first watched the trailer the word did little more than remind me, I wasn't going to start speculating because exactly of what you said, it's a normal English word. But context is also important.

Know what's another normal English word that is used to identify recurring characters?

Crestfallen.

So I guess if Anri ever said that he/she is feeling crestfallen would that suggest some kind of lore link???!!11 :o Amazing.

Well actually yes ha. At this point in the franchise the use of that particular word would totally have implications. "Oh you thought Hawkwood was your crestfallen warrior? Wrong losers, it was your waifu all along! Trollsoft wins again!"

Well yeah. FROM is very precise with its dialog. If they used a word that was associated with a specific character, it's probably not by accident.

I disagree. If every adjective they used meant they can never use it again on another character, they'd quickly run out of words they can use. I believe you're giving this word prejudice because it's unfamiliar to you.

it irks me that you think forlorn is a normal english word? how many times have you used it in you lifespan? ;) j/k

I would say it's a normal word if you like to read a lot, but spoken aloud not many people say it.

it's a very old fashioned word, meaning sad or hopeless, words come in and out of fashion all of the time, like you using irk, someone else might use the more common annoy, but fifty years ago irk was perfectly normal, 100 years ago it was I find it irksome

but forlorn is a weird choice nonetheless because of it's connotations, there is a forlorn hope [one with no chance of happening] which is also the first charge against a seige where the frontrunners were expected to be slaughtered. It also means forsaken, abandoned, lost and desperate

It seems plausible that, if we are revisiting the Painted World in some form, Aldia would be there, considering it was used to lock away things threatening to the gods.

Plus at the start of the trailer the tree is covered in small lights that are very similar to the fire bugs in the DS2 trailer.

The "forlorn" part is most likely a reference to the Corvians.

This seems like it might be coincidental but since there's other instances of this like Spoiler:, maybe you're on to something. Nice find.

At this point it would be more surprising if they accidentally did this.

They've had other meaningless instances of this, like Sif's theme in Ludwig's, but those are two different series so it's not on the same level.

I would be shocked if it didn't have some meaning here.

Other examples could include the themes of Cleric Beast and Laurence, as well as Aldrich and Gwyndolin. So it's definitely possible. So maybe we fight aldia or something other character related to him

Red herring m8 Miyazaki fucking ya

I don't think you have much sway in declaring that. While the musical layover is correct, you haven't said anything about the theory or the casual use of the chords (if there is one, I'm not the music guy). But especially when it's literally four notes, I don't think you've really presented "irrefutable" proof that there's a connection beyond theming.

I don't think anything Miyazaki does is an accident...

[–]XeriehGwyndolin is my waifu 19

I really hope Aldia shows up, he was one of my favourite characters from ds2

From the forlorn set of Dark Souls 2

Born of Aldia's obsession with the First Sin, the Forlorn lost both their corporeal form and a world to call their own. Now they drift into other worlds, ever in search of a home. But without self, one has neither beginning nor end, and so the Forlorn have only to wander.

Edit: Formatting

That has A LOT of similarity to the trailer transcript.

"Unkindled one. If you are like us, another forlorn soul with no place to call your own, then show my lady flame."

Jesus, proof that Souls people are the most keen investigators out there. Nice find man you always seem to impress me.

The piano does sound similar. It's certainly possible, it was done before in Soul of Cinder's second phase. Or maybe the composer just felt like using the same key signature and progression lol.

As for the voice, it sounds different from aldia

The beginning part sounds alot like nashandras theme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjaYBPlHiu8

[–]NifaxizziGet out of my forest. 2

I was about to say "well that probably isnt that rare of a chord progression" nd then i realized you were actually talking about a leitmotiff.

Then yes ofc, nice find, in a very "silent" game like Dark Souls melodies usually mean a lot. Reason why gwyn's theme hits you like a truck when it originally plays, and then again when it plays in the second form of the soul of cinder fight.

good ear! While the two excerpts your presented certainly are within the same key and style, ONLY the first two notes are identical. :)

I transcribed the two excerpts for you:
1 Arandiel
2 Aldia

In case you don't read notation the Arandiel excerpt is "F, E, Bb, A, Bb, Gb" and the Aldia excerpt is "F, E, G, Db"

edit: A later part of the Ariandel intro soundtrack (at 0:40 in the Bamco trailer) features a more identical variation of the Aldia theme, although embellished, which proves the composer has certainly used the Aldia theme for this Ariandel trailer soundtrack.

This is kind of shocking if it's true and not just a coincidence. Earlier in the subreddit, Japanese speakers/readers broke it down that the Japanese ingame description of soul stream in DS3 was NOT referring to Aldia.

Aldia's Japanese name is (researcher of the first sin), while the ingame description of soul stream in DS3 in japanese refers to "first of the scholars", which is pointing to the Pontiff.

Plus, there's a pontiff statue (same unique flame blade he uses in the boss fight). Also the Pontiff's clothes are really similar to the scholars in the archives.

We've kind of confirmed Aldia has no importance to DS3, but now this find shows up again..it's kind of a stretch though. Or it could just be harping on themes of Aldia's message (don't light the fire, Velka + londor + Sable Church).

Good find man. Aldia is one of my all time favorite souls characters- a connection would be fucking amazing. Something you might have missed- the very opening scene of the trailer is the unkindled walking through the snow past a tree which has tiny flames burning at the end of it's branches. Being that aldia is a sort of flaming tree, I doubt that was accidental.

The trees look like the flying Pilgrim Butterflies from the castle, just more regressed. The ones in the very first area of the castle look like an even more regressed form.

[–]Abyss_walkingLook Good. Get Good. Dark Souls 2

I heard Nashandra's theme at the start.

EDIT: Rewatching it, it definitely sounds like a mix of Nashandra and Aldia themes. I love both of those tracks <3

Gotta agree, it's too similar to be a coincidence. Im wondering if Aldia will have ties to Velka, Goddess of Sin, or if theories regarding Karlas description as a "child of the dark", are literal.

[–]ReggiarditoProvide Thee Succ 1

I hope so. Aldia was one of my favorite parts of DS2 lore so to see him forgotten like the primordial serpents were just breaks my heart.

Also, the word drop of 'forlorn' and it sounded like the narrator could have been old man Aldizzle

[–]arkage_is_pay2win 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Just the trailer itself gave me SotFS and Aldia vibes, but it was just a hunch. Now it looks like there's some concrete evidence, too. I really doubt they would do something like this without reason.

And THANK GOD, Dark Souls 2 had a lot of interesting lore in it that I felt From really missed out on in Dark Souls 3, and I really hope they expand upon it in this DLC.

[–]Dark_TlalocAbysswalker 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

The music in general also reminded me very much of a similar motif to Sulyvahn's (which might be in keeping with the general feel of the trailer). I was definitely reminded of Aldia in the beginning, and have been hoping he'd make an appearance somewhere in DS3.

[–]HelloFr1endMoonlight in the Abyss 1

I got Sulyvahn vibes too.

[–]HoodedSwordsman40/30/40/10/25/30/60/15/10 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

im hoping Sin will be a better mechanic in the DLC if this is true

[–]Haxyl 0

Couldn't agree more, and definitely when you look back at the Soul of Cinder theme which is a revamp/revisit of Gwyn's theme in DS1. So the music note relation theory seems very plausible

I hope he is involved imply on the basis that I enjoy Aldia as a character, however I highly doubt he will be involved in this upcoming DLC. That's all I can really say about this. We'll find out when it launched in 2 months or when someone leaks the content.

YEAH! Give us ALDIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think that the guy with the lordvessel is Bearer of the Curse (from the second game)

How so? The only Lordvessel known to exist in Drangleic is busted into pieces in the Majula mansion. That, and it would make no sense for it to be the Bearer of the Curse.

Lmao the start sounds similar to nashandra's theme as well.

"Extremely convincing involvement of Nashandra in Ashes of Ariandel"

Given the blatant ariamis allusions, the forlorn word choice is likely more closely related to the corvians who are described as "forlorn souls". In fact the dialogue itself seems practically ripped from the storyteller staff description.

I can't imagine how aldia would fit in a velka/painted world themed dlc and this is pretty sure painted world themed (place for unwanted souls, crow boss, wooden bridge in front of a cliff with the buildings in a good state).

[–]KallyWallyFor hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee. 5

Yeah, seriously. How would the Scholar of the First Sin have anything to do with the Goddess of Sin? That's way too much of a stretch.

ds2 never made the connection between aldia and velka. Scholar of the first sin refers to the creation of the chaos flame and isn't linked to velkas sin-hunting-system (in my opinion).

You are totally wrong man. The First Sin refers to the linking of the Fire by Gwyn. And Aldia as the scholar studies it, and is trying to find a third option a way out of the binnary choice. Beyond the scope of light, beyond the reach of dark.

Chaos Flame is the source of demons and was created by Witch of Izalith, when she tried to recreate/link the First Flame.

and that's why aldia has a fire/root theme, his creations are found at the sinner boss and his interest in the witch of izalith.

I'm sure that trying to recreat the first flame and creating the chaos flmae, setting demons free is a sin. It happened before the fire linking buisness.

Ds2 still makes no connection between velka and aldia.
