Time to play Memphis instead of Martial? (self.reddevils)

Martial seems off and this move might fire him up to fight for his place,also i'd like to see how Memphis performs under Josè.

People are really overblowing the Martial situation as well. He still terrorises the fullback and keeps the LCB/LB pinned deep which is why if you look at any heatmap we have an acre of space on that flank between the midfield and defensive line.

The entire first half our best chances were created by Martial.

Mata's half as dangerous as him but if he makes one good play he gets praised as some sort of Messiah. Yet the moment we brought him off we instantly came alive.

I'm not having a go at Mata but people are really overblowing criticism of Martial so they can push their Memphis agenda.

For the derby I'd say Martial is still a much safer choice than Memphis. If Martial doesn't play I'd prefer Rashford seeing as he scored in the last one

Lingard and Rashford should both be ahead of Memphis.

From the looks of it Young's also ahead of him in the pecking order.

No. Martial was decent I thought in the opening 2 games, was way off against Hull though so I can see the argument to drop him. Memphis is well down the pecking order though. Either Mkhitaryan on the left with Mata right, or Rashford left and Mkhitaryan right, or switching to a 4-3-3 and putting Herrera in the middle with Rooney wide. There's a lot of options before Memphis comes into play for a big game. Especially the manchester derby.

Edit: Also lingard who always scores in big games. Wouldn't be surprised at all to see both Lingard and Mkhitaryan start against City in place of Martial/Mata. Mourinho will probably keep Rashford as an impact sub.

Martial was decent I thought in the opening 2 games

He was very wasteful in both games, especially vs Southampton. Got played into great chances multiple times and completely wasted it.

Martial has been playing fine. Against hull he had no one to run at because of the amount of players behind the ball and the static defense. Jose is happy with him, here's what he said:

"When a team is not playing particularly great and is at an average level, then someone comes to the top. Last season, no Martial meant no three points,” said Mourinho, when asked about Anthony at his pre-match press conference.

“This season we've had no Martial goals and three victories. The team is okay; other players are scoring goals. I think he is performing more than okay and I wouldn't expect more than that at this stage.”

Mourinho also stressed that anyone wishing to judge the French forward should remember his shortened preparation period following Euro 2016. Despite this, Martial has still posed a threat down the left flank and the boss clearly has no concerns about the man signed from Monaco a year ago.

"He’s had no pre-season and was the last person apart from Pogba to join the squad," Mourinho pointed out. “Some guys take more time but I think he is doing fine and he will have a normal season, which for a guy of his quality is a good season. I think he will do well this year.”

Look at his positions on the video, this has every touch of his ball, most of of the time his position was on wings, we didnt play a 4-4-2, we played the same formation just the 3 behind Ibra were fluid and changed their positions all the time, u can see here Rooney on the center at time, u can Mkhi as a number 10, u can see Rashford on both wings, even Mourinho on the post match interview said the same thing, we didnt play one way we played different ways of attacks.

Mkhi, Lingard, Young are all ahead of Depay at LW. So too are Rooney, Rashford, Pogba. Maybe even Mata and Shaw.

I think Memphis is ready for a shot in the first team- but not in the derby. If anybody replaces Martial there it should be Rashford. Miki also should play but he'll probably start on the other wing. We need pace to hit them on the break and Mata's roaming playmaker style will not suit the game at all.

To get back to the question though, no. I think Martial should have one more shot. Memphis and Young haven't played enough minutes to be thrown into a huge game like this, although Young's experience might mean he can slot in without issues. Rashford isn't really a winger although he could probably do a job there. So stick with Martial for now.

I'm not opposed to Martial getting dropped for a game or a few but I'd rather see Mkhitaryan and/or Rashford come in and start before Memphis.

Memphis probably needs to work his way back up from Europa League/League Cup games.

Certainly he shouldn't start vs City.

All of Lingard, Micky, Rash and even Young should be ahead of Memphis. They've all taken their chances and shown they deserve more minutes. He hasn't.

I've been so keen for this to happen. Martial is clearly being affected by his personal life. Or maybe he's just not up to match fitness but either way his quality in the final 3rd has been poor. Memphis is one of the most talented players we have and is hated on because he didn't live up to the huge expectation last season under a confidence killing manager. But what I know will happen is what Rio Ferdinand disgustingly suggested was to play Rashford lw instead. I say disgusting because he only suggested it to shoehorn rooneys position at 10 when we all know Rashford is a central player/striker. People saying Rashford was playing left wing both didn't listen to what jose said after the game or watch the game properly. Rasford played as a striker up front with ibra while Rooney was pushed on to the left. If you would rather Rooney there instead of Memphis there is something really wrong with you.
