Why is it specifically Rooney being scapegoated for our attacking efforts during the match? (self.reddevils)

I was at the game and I hadn't seen this subs reaction till now but wow.

The only attackers that played better than him are the ones who were subbed on. Zlatan, Mata, Martial all had worse games overall. Heck even Pogba was very poor. But people have collectively pinned the blame on Rooney. In fact I'd argue that Rooney was our only starting attacker who didn't have a bad game overall.

It feels like both r/soccer and r/reddevils made up their minds when he turned into Sanogo for around 2 minutes and gave the ball away 3 times in that time period. Then blocked out everything he did before and after that. Being the pessimist I am, when I saw him do it I immediately assumed he'd continue all game and I'd be in for a shitshow. But it seemed to stop there.

IIRC, didn't he perfectly set up both Zlatan and Martial too?

At least I can think of think of moments were Mata and Pogba had their brilliance that people could use to justify their performance. Even though I'd disagree. I understand that an argument could still be made supporting them. But Zlatan and Martial did nothing right. Zlatan spent 90 mins having the ball bounce off him over and over again. I can't think of a single talking point I can use to praise them.

I know it can't be completely performance related because no way can watch that game and select him as the one who needs to leave the XI based off it. Even ignoring today, Martial has been worse than him all season. So what has gotten people so angry this game? Or is bashing Rooney post-match protocol at this point? It almost feels like some users were annoyed that he got an assist. I know a guy in the stands behind me was.

Happens to many other players too. People seem to pick one player they don't like before the match. Then use confirmation bias to reinforce opinions.

Also in other highlights look at how Mata, Mhkitaryan are trying one twos and through balls and put Rooney in the same spots and he's miscontrolling it and taking it backwards before passing it outside again. No link up play with his striker at all.

It's more or less because we have a better potential line up, probably, if he didn't play. Mata in the hole and Mkhitaryan starting on the wing would probably be better. It's not as much not liking him, obviously he's a massive legend, but we've had him forced into the team for a season and a half basically, and significant aspects of his game are fading/have faded.

He'll do good stuff every now and then, flashes of the old Rooney, but every time Mkhitaryan comes on he looks like an absolute monster of a player, so it feels a bit like Rooney's there for political reasons when clearly we've got a player that either pretty clearly outperforms Rooney at 10, or Mata on the wing, being benched.

It's because he isn't one of our best 11 players. So shockingly people don't want him in our lineup? I fucking love Rooney. 3rd favorite United player after CR and Van Nistlerooy but we have better lineups without him right now.

Nobody wants to admit golden boy Martial has been wank in every game and won't admit when Zlatan is worse than Rooney because he's new Cantona to reignite our season, it's easier to shit on Rooney and pander to the upvotes of the idiots who only cherry pick the bad stuff he does.

It's not like Zlatan's scored 4 goals already this season or anything, or that people are admitting Martial's been wank but he's going through poor form and a troubling personal situation. Rooney's had good, even great moments over the last 3 seasons but he's also had fucking terrible games and moments where he's killed off promising attacks due to his touch and decision making.

Zlatan's in his first season with us, Rooney's not. I feel like you're missing the point? Rooney's provided goals and assists yes, but he's also provided terrible games that should've seen him taken off, as any other player would've.
