A TOAST To Scientology

John 3:19-21

And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Amidst the world of speeches and speechmakers, motivational speakers and orators Toastmasters International presides as the place to learn the game. http://www.toastmasters.org/

Founded by Dr. Ralph Smedley, an August 2001 press release stated, "Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking skills through a worldwide network of clubs. The organization currently has nearly 180,000 members in 9,000 clubs in 70 countries. Since its founding nearly 77 years ago in October 1924, the organization has helped some four million men and women give presentations with poise and confidence"

From the Toastmasters Biography of Ralph Smedley

"...Toastmasters was the brainchild of a Midwesterner named Ralph C. Smedley. In 1903, after graduating from Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois, Smedley took a job as director of education for the local Young Men's Christian Association. Realizing that the older boys who visited the YMCA needed training in communication, he began a public speaking club.

Smedley called his group, "The Toastmasters Club" because the activities resembled a banquet with toasts and after-dinner speakers... Smedley's club blossomed, but soon he was promoted to general secretary of the YMCA and transferred to Freeport, Illinois...Smedley must have despaired of ever seeing his creation blossom into a self-sustaining organization. "I observed a tendency among my fellow secretaries at the YMCA to regard The Toastmasters Club as a sort of peculiarity -- an idiosyncrasy of mine," he later said. "Perhaps it was not altogether orthodox as a 'Y' activity."...

Finally, the YMCA director arrived in Santa Ana. Once more he organized a Toastmasters club, holding the first meeting in the Santa Ana YMCA basement on October 22, 1924. ... Men from neighboring communities sought out the group and liked what they saw. Smedley was quick to help them organize their own Toastmasters clubs. The new clubs were united in a federation designed to coordinate their activities and ensure uniform methods.

In 1932, the federation was incorporated as Toastmasters International, following the establishment of a club in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada. Districts were created later, as the number of clubs increased.

For many years, Smedley held the position of general secretary of the Santa Ana YMCA, handling finances, fund raising, program planning, membership matters and the supervision of a number of YMCA employees. In addition, he served as liaison for the local and national YMCA organizations.

Somehow Smedley managed to find time to spread the gospel about Toastmasters, serving as its executive secretary and editor of The Toastmaster magazine, while also maintaining his busy YMCA schedule...

International Growth
By 1941, Smedley realized that Toastmasters needed his full-time attention. He resigned from the YMCA...."

The YMCA was discussed in our article, Wycliffe Bible Translators, John Mott & Rockefeller Connections. In it we are reminded of John Mott's role in the YMCA, which trail of related organizations lead to the formation of the ecumenical World Council of Churches.

"John Mott, a Freemason and revered by many, was the link to Cam Townsend's modernism and Rockefeller. After hearing and speaking personally with C. T. Studd, one of the "Cambridge Seven" who later worked with Hudson Taylor in China, John Mott determined to be a missionary. That same year, at the 1886 Northfield (Massachusetts) Student Conference led by Dwight Moody, Mott volunteered for foreign missions. Mott attended the Mt. Hermon Conference in 1886 where the Student Volunteer Movement (SVM) was born. He became college secretary of the YMCA in 1888 and that same year, he helped organize the Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions (SVM), a branch of the YMCA and YWCA. He served as SVM chairman for over 30 years, simultaneously providing able leadership for "... a highly evangelistic YMCA and World's Student Christian Federation."

The ecumenical YMCA of the USA, in their 'YMCA at a Glance',  states that "....Ys help people develop values and behavior that are consistent with Christian principles. Ys are for people of all faiths, races, abilities, ages and incomes..." http://www.ymca.net

The Mission of Toastmasters International is, "...devoted to making effective oral communication a worldwide reality. Through its member Clubs, Toastmasters International helps men and women learn the arts of speaking, listening and thinking—vital skills that promote self-actualization, enhance leadership potential, foster human understanding, and contribute to the betterment of mankind..."

Toastmasters International Vision, "... empowers people to achieve their full potential and realize their dreams. Through our member Clubs, people throughout the world can improve their communication and leadership skills, and find the courage to change."

Celebrity Centre International, 5930 Franklin Ave., Hollywood, CA  90028 is one of many Church of Scientology Celebrity Centres. From the linked Scientology Celebrity Centre site, L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology and Dianetics is quoted as writing, "... A culture is only as great as its dreams, and its dreams are dreamed by artists." The Centre continues its promotion by saying, "Artists supply the spark of creativity and the vision of what could be leading us into tomorrow. Artists wield enormous influence over society, setting cultural trends and forwarding new ideas, both good and bad....To forward their dreams and help artists elevate the culture, L. Ron Hubbard established Celebrity Centres. They are located in cities around the world and assist artists to achieve their goals through the application of Dianetics and Scientology...." http://www.scientology.org/p_jpg/world/worldeng/21/cc01.htm

Dianetics, according to their glossary, is "...spiritual healing technology.  It addresses and handles the effects of the spirit on the body and can alleviate such things as unwanted sensations and emotions, accidents, injuries and psychosomatic illnesses (ones that are caused or aggravated by mental stress). Dianetics means "through the soul" (from Greek dia, through, and nous, soul).  It is further defined as "what the soul is doing to the body." [glossary]http://www.renaissancespeakers.com/glossary.htm

The Renaissance Club was co-founded by Roberta Perry and Richard Stewart. Perry, describing her role, "...Renaissance Speakers was birthed from my dream to marry Scientology  and Toastmasters.  The dream took shape one sunny Saturday afternoon at a Toastmasters District One conference. As District One Governor, I was chairing the District Tall Tales Contest.  Richard Stewart won first place…and he was fabulous!!!  Upon being handed his trophy, he thanked Dr. Smedley and L. Ron Hubbard.  After the contest I backed him into the corner and quietly, but with enthusiasm, asked him if he was a Scientologist!  With that “Yes,” the rest is history.  We chartered at Author Services, on our first meeting in September 1989 with over 30 members..." [co-founders >http://www.renaissancespeakers.com/co-founders.htm]

Co-founder of Renaissance Speakers, Richard Stewart, wrote, "...In 1979, I joined Toastmasters in Houston, Texas...Later that year I won the District-Level Humorous Speech Contest and was invited to deliver the winning speech at the Houston Scientology Mission.  As a result of this event, many new people were introduced to Scientology and several L. Ron Hubbard books were purchased.  I realized, right then, the value of Toastmasters: ...The following year I was elected Area Governor of my Toastmasters District and started five new clubs.  (“Yes,” you could say I was a zealot.)  Best of all, one of the clubs that I started was the Houston Scientology Mission club.  We christened it “The Scientology Speakers.”  It was a blast joining the two powerful groups of Toastmasters and Scientology together. I wrote to L. Ron Hubbard in 1981 and told him the wins we were having with the Scientology Toastmasters club.  He replied to acknowledge me and the Toastmasters group (LRH Letter)...I moved to LA in 1983...I promptly joined a local Toastmaster club (Hollywood & Vine club)...I discovered that the District Governor, Roberta Perry, was also a Scientologist. ..." [co-founders >http://www.renaissancespeakers.com/co-founders.htm]

According to the glossary, Scientology Mission is a group granted the privilege of delivering elementary Scientology and Dianetic services. [glossary]http://www.renaissancespeakers.com/glossary.htm

Other Members of Renaissance Speakers include, Barbara Ayash, "Co-Founder and President of the Concerned Businessmen's Association of America...http://www.cbaa.org; http://www.excaliburworld.org" and others.

Author Services>http://www.authorservices.com/ is the international representative for the literary, theatrical and musical  works of L. Ron Hubbard. However, all writings and works of L. Ron Hubbard are actually the property of "... a corporation doing business using his name and literary reputation, calling itself the "L. Ron Hubbard Library."

That name, though, is a "fictitious business name." In fact, its primary business address is just a rental mail box--#162--at a place called Village Mail Call, 419 Larchmont in Los Angeles, ... click to see the actual "Fictitious Business Name Statement" that was filed with the Los Angeles County Recorder's office. [http://www.clever.net/webwerks/veritas/cst/cstdba.htm] The true name of the corporation is "Church of Spiritual Technology" (CST). From Library of Congress records, it seems that CST now owns ALL copyrights to everything L. Ron Hubbard ever wrote..., CST now also holds the power and authority to seize all trademarks that are related in any way to Dianetics or Scientology, and to seize the confidential "Advanced Technology" (which includes the "OT Levels")..."CST has the power to...[take] over the religious trademarks and use of the Advanced Technology, thereby gaining direct control over all Scientology organizations..."

The four secretive co-founders of CST are considered the controllers but it is unknown if they or others are in control. They are: "Lyman Spurlock, Sherman Lenske, Meade Emory, and Leon Misterek. None of them but Lyman Spurlock is a Scientologist. Spurlock is a CPA. The other three are attorneys." [Hubbard Library>http://www.clever.net/webwerks/veritas/index.htm]

There are authors who suggest that Hubbards/Scientologists information and research on remote viewing and other occult beliefs was incorporated into CIA experiments, joining the two groups in manipulation and mind control experiments and propaganda.

L. Hubbard's theology of Scientology is based on his definition "Knowing how to know ... Know thyself ... and the truth shall set you free." It was the 1950 publication of Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health that initially focused world attention on L. Ron Hubbard. Hubbards writings, speeches and other works are considered sacred Scriptures. Scientology teaches that all humans descended from a race called Thetans, who are uncreated, omnipotent gods, who gave up their powers to enter the Material-Energy-Space-Time (MEST) world of Earth. Paralleling Darwins theory of evolution and that of Freud, Thetans evolved upward by reincarnation to become humans who could not remember their deified state. Scientologists are encouraged to awaken their dormant Thetan potential by removing all mental blocks called engrams. By doing so they can realize their true personhood, achieving total power and control over MEST. Scientology uses a psychotherapeutic process for breaking through the engrams "picked up from traumas in prior lives," to "realize" once again one's true identity as an "operating Thetan" (God) beyond the limitations of MEST. Scientology includes the occult rooted astral travel, regression to "past lives", and the "urge toward existence as spirits."

2 Thessalonians 2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

L. Ron Hubbard was involved in Buddhism, Native shamanism, and so on. He also declared that Dianetics was "the spiritual heir of Buddhism in the Western world," and it is suggested by some that Hubbard was at one time closely linked with British Satanist Aleister Crowley.  He was in fact, according to the book Acid Dreams, directly linked with John Starr Cooke. The association took place during the CIA LSD experiments, and while people like Laura Huxley and many others embraced and promoted the drug under the CIA experiments, a memorable Love Pageant Rally allowed the mass experiment on many hippies.

Michael Bowen, an acid induced artist was a liaison with  "...the Oracle staff and various psychedelic and artistic luminaries such as Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti.

Some years earlier Bowen had fallen under the singular and charismatic influence of a mysterious guru-type figure named John Starr Cooke. A man of wealth and influential family connections, Cooke was no stranger to high-level CIA personnel. His sister, Alice, to whom he was very close, was married to Roger Kent, a prominent figure in the California state Democratic party; Roger's brother, Sherman Kent, was head of the CIA's National Board of Estimates (an extremely powerful position) and served as CIA director Allen Dulles's right~hand man during the Cold War. John Cooke hobnobbed with Sherman Kent at annual family reunions and is said to have made the acquaintance of a number of CIA operatives while traveling in Europe.

Driven by an avid interest in the occult, Cooke journeyed around the world befriending an assortment of mystics and spiritual teachers. In the early 1950s he became a close confidant of L. Ron Hubbard, the ex-navy officer who founded the Scientology organization. Cooke rose high in the ranks of the newly formed religious cult. (He was the first "clear" in America, meaning he had attained the level of an advanced Scientology initiate.) Before long, however, he  grew disillusioned with Hubbard and they parted ways. A few years later, while living in Algiers, Cooke was stricken with polio, which left him crippled and confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Despite his physical disability he was revered by a Sufi sect in northern Africa as a great healer and a saint. Some of his admirers claim he could activate shakti, or kundalini energy, and induce a blissful spinal seizure merely by touching people on the forehead

[See:More Manifestations, Less Bible]

By the early 1960s Cooke had moved back to California, he immersed himself in an intensive study of the tarot. Word quickly spread through the West Coast occult circuit about an extraordinary psychic who possessed a tarot deck with the handwritten annotations of its previous owner, the infamous Aleister Crowley. Crowds of young people started to flock to Carmel to visit Cooke, and they were not disappointed. With a bald head, goatee, and piercing eyes, Cooke looked as though he belonged behind a crystal ball.  Shortly after he participated in a series of "channeling" sessions which resulted in the New Tarot Deck for the Aquarian Age, he had his first taste of LSD-25. Apparently he found the psychedelic to his liking, as he proceeded to drop acid nearly every day for a two-year period. According to one of his disciple-associates, Cooke was something of a bacchant. At times his penchant for alcohol and acid left him drunk and crazed in his wheelchair.

Cooke was sequestered at a secluded outpost in Cuernavaca, Mexico (his home until he died in 1976), from whence he directed a small but dedicated band of evangelists known as the Psychedelic Rangers. Michael Bowen was a member of this group. At Cooke's instruction a half-dozen Ranger's were dispatched to various psychedelic hot spots in North America and Europe. Bowen went to Millbrook to try and influence the thinking of Leary's clan and lure some of them back to Mexico where Cooke was leading seances while high on acid....

Bowen claims he furnished acid to a number of well-known public figures,... He also turned on certain journalists (among them a reporter for Life magazine) with the hope that they might see the Clear Light, as it were, and present a more favorable picture of LSD in the press.

Cooke and his Psychedelic Rangers believed that by spreading the LSD revelation they were helping to enlighten mankind. They fancied themselves cosmic Good Guys secretly battling the Forces of Darkness in an all-out struggle that would ultimately determine the destiny of the planet. Their world view was distinctly Manichaean: Eros versus Thanatos, the great mythic showdown, with history merely the echo of these titanic opposites locked in eternal conflict. In this respect their perceptions were akin to those of another group of psychedelic devotees who operated in secret while invoking a Manichaean demonology to justify their activities. Nourished by the dual specter of an all-powerful enemy (Communism) and a permanently threatened national security, the CIA assumed the role of America's first line of defense. In its never-ending battle against the Red Menace the cult of intelligence utilized every weapon at its disposal, including covert LSD warfare.

In 1966 Michael Bowen settled in Haight-Ashbury, at the specific request of John Cooke. The two men communicated on a regular basis, keeping each other abreast of new developments within the burgeoning youth culture...at Bowen's pad after the Love Pageant Rally, he dutifully called his spiritual adviser to tell him what had transpired. During their conversation, according to Bowen, the plan for an even bigger event was conceived: a "Gathering of the Tribes," a spiritual occasion of otherworldly dimensions that would raise the vibration of the entire planet...One of the main purposes of the be-in, as formulated by Cooke, Bowen, and the rest of the Oracle crew, was to bring together cultural and political rebels who did not always see eye to eye on strategies for liberation. In effect the goal was to psychedelicize the radical left. Toward this end the organizers decided to include at least one representative of the Berkeley activist community among the list of invited speakers. Bowen suggested Jerry Rubin, a leader of the Berkeley Vietnam Day protest, who was still a devoted Marxist although he had recently turned on to acid (evidence, according to Bowen, that the LSD reconditioning process was only partially successful). [Acid Dreams, pp 157-160]

Scientologists believe that Christ was merely a man. There is also denial of heaven, hell and eternal judgment, which is no different than many others as mentioned in our article "Will God say, "Just Kidding" About Eternity?" Rather, Scientologist believe they can awaken their "pre-existent" deity within and regain total godhood. That is not unlike group after group who hold to the "god within" theology. See: The 'god' In Every Man

1 John 2:22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. 23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.

The Scientologist website records, "....Scientology believes man to be basically good, not evil. It is man’s experiences that have led him to commit evil deeds, not his nature...."

That of course is contrary to God's Word which states in Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;"

Jesus said in Mark 7:20

"And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man."

Romans 5:10 "For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. 11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. 12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:..17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) 18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life."

We are reminded in Ephesians 2:2:1 "And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins: 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others."

We, that is those who have accepted Jesus Christ as Savior, are warned by God's Word:

Ephesians 5:6 "Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:"

Due to the obvious un-Biblical nature of Scientology, and certainly contrary to Christ, it may be surprising to some to see that people claiming to be Christians publicly endorsing the group. Many applaud Scientology for it's defense of what they deem religious freedom. The Church of Scientology has a website that presents such endorsements, from political leaders, businessmen, race and political organizations and religious adherents of all denominations.  For example:

"Scientology is a practical religious theology which embodies the technology of helping people discover themselves...The pastoral counseling program of Scientology puts man in touch with reality and enhances and strengthens his relationship with God and his fellow man. The beauty of Scientology is you don’t have to give up your religious upbringing to become a Scientologist. You can still remain in your original church...."

Cecil Vowles of the UN in Australia stated:

The Declaration of Human Rights as released to the world by the United Nations in 1948 was a huge stride forward for humanity. The tenets of the Scientology religion not only support the hopes and aspirations for humanity as contained in the Declaration, but give us all an understanding of why it is so important people are brought together when they have this understanding. The principles contained in Scientology will be a major element in bringing the peoples of the world together.

One noteworthy individual of the many who endorse Scientologists, is Evangelical pastor, Jim Nicholls.

"There are many Bible-believing Evangelicals and others in the established Christian community who have not yet accepted the Church of Scientology. Nevertheless, they should thank the Lord for them, because the Scientologists have fought a lot of battles that have helped protect and safeguard freedom for us all.

Because of these efforts, Scientology is continuing to gain more and more acceptability among leaders in the religious community, and the Church has won most of its battles. However, while they are enjoying a breathing period, be assured there are a lot more battles to be fought, and won, down the road.

Rev. Jim Nicholls

Producer of Voice of Freedom

Radio and TV Show

The Voice of Freedom shows are no longer produced. However, Jim Nicholls does continue to have influence as will be discussed in the next section. That Scientologists are welcomed and endorsed by ecumenical groups such as Toastmasters, should not be a surprise. That people view their inroads into all avenues of life as good, should also not be a surprise. The ecumenical nature of the world is being prepared to fully accept the "lying and signs and wonders," and all manner of false teaching which rejects Jesus Christ. The world is being prepared so that God's purposes will be fulfilled. Many claim to know God, but in reality reject His Truth.

Titus 1:16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
2:1 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:

For More on Religious Freedom See: CNP's Coalition for Religious Freedom: CNP Joint Projects >Dr. Timothy LaHaye, Dr. Jerry Falwell, James Robison, Dr. D. James Kennedy, Robert GrantMarlin Maddoux, Rev. Endorsing false teaching and false teachers is not sound doctrine. The concept of this 'freedom' that many advocate politically and religiously is not true freedom. In fact, it is a deception that lends itself to the ushering in of the anti-christ, one-world religion.
