I just bought DOOM and it's amazing. (self.PS4)

Since GameStop and Amazon had DOOM on sale for 20 bucks, I went for it. Wow, this game is amazing so far and the reason why I love it so much is because it reminds me so much of Metroid Prime. The map system is exactly like Metroid prime. The feel of the game with the visor and the health bar and icons is very much like Metroid. The data log which has explaination of everything in game just like Metroid Prime. This is probably my favorite game on the console so far and I think it's definitely worth the 20 dollars, or even more than that.

Edit: I just wanted to clarify some things based on the comments. I am not saying this game is exactly like Metroid Prime, it just has things that reminded of it. Metroid Prime is amazing game, way ahead of its time. Original story, fully 3D open world and environment, great suit upgrades and game mechanics, and graphics were great. I loved the game so much and I was really sad to see that after Metroid prime 3 they haven't made a sequel for the Wii U yet. DOOM on its own is amazing, I love the story so far , the gameplay is great, I love that it is really fast pace even though it might give some people motion sickness. It just really moves me even more that it has some characteristics of a Metroid Prime game. I really enjoy playing DOOM and I hope people find out how amazing game is and worth your money. I really hope the game does overall well in sales and they make a sequel because this game deserves a sequel.

I'm a lifelong DOOM fan and this game was everything I could have hoped for. My favorite game of the year by far and one of my favorite FPS games ever.

At first, I was bummed by PC couldn't handle this game. But they got the controls so tight and precise on the console versions, I don't even care about keyboard and mouse anymore. It looks and performs amazing on PS4 too (I never even notice the variable resolution). iD did an incredible job developing this for consoles and I don't regret my $60 purchase one bit.

I never played the first few DOOM games back in the day. Doom 3 was my first foray into that franchise. I loved that game, but I'm told it's a bit of a departure from the other games in the series.

It depends what you like about it. The general aesthetic and type, concerning demons from hell infiltrating a Martian research base through portals and so on? Needing to get keys and figure out where to go, find secret areas, etc? It's got all that.

But Doom 3 felt more survival horror-ish. You generally worked in narrow dark hallways and cleared monsters 1 at a time. This is much more in your face fighting with hordes that you have to clear at a time. More action-based. For instance, there's no need to reload weapons, giving it that early FPS feel.

There isn't a in depth story like doom 3. It pretty much goes like doom 3 never happened. Story is essentially "You are the toughest mofo around, you hate demons, and nothing will stop you from eradicating them". So essentially old dooms story but a little more fleshed out. I strongly recommend it. Especially now that it's on sale.

DOOM 3 was much slower paced and was very heavy on the horror elements. New doom (and original DOOM/DOOM II aren't really horror games. They're more like insane run and gun games where it's you and your adrenaline vs. hell. If you stop moving, you're dead. So you don't stop moving, and you don't stop shooting. I tend to go into these murder-fueled fugue states where I don't remember much until the room falls silent and there's blood everywhere. It's insanely fun.

It's worth noting that when you aren't used to that, it gets pretty tiring. I've always been a huge DOOM fan, but it had been years since I was used to the level of action the new DOOM has. After playing one map, I usually had to go take a break and play something happy / super casual to calm my nerves.

Once I got back into my groove, I couldn't get enough of it.

If you liked Doom 3 then Dead Space is the closest relative I can think of. New Doom is a very fast paced shooter (by modern standards) with virtually no storytelling.

Completely different type of game, but Doom 3 was great in its own right. If you want to playing something similar to the dark, tension of Doom 3, you might like the Metro series. Not as scary as Doom 3, but the pace is similar.

If you have a PC and want to get into Doom and Doom II (doesn't need to be a gaming PC, just something relatively current. My Surface 3 handles it just fine) I highly recommend you play Brutal Doom. I can zip up the folder in a drop box and send it to you in a PM later on if interested.

I had never played a Doom before but knew the name well. Looked at the trailers, pre-ordered and was playing just after launch. I don't think I've ever had so much fun in a game.

It runs so well too, especially after the Vulkan update. I have an i5 6500/390/16GB RAM machine and get 80FPS on Nightmare graphics settings at 1440p.

I'm not sure what the specs of your PC are, but they released an update that switches the graphics API from OpenGL to Vulkan and it gave me something like a 30% boost in fps. Granted, I was already at 140 fps to begin with

          It's shitty for the first half because you have no tools to defend your self. Then it becomes more manageable when you get half the weapons and a bunch of the mods. You HAVE to 100% every level tho for those sweet upgrade points, mods, preator tokens ETC. Otherwise you just get molested. Especially when more demons appear. You literally get killed by 2 imp fireballs and are regularly one shard of armor away from death on every hit. Plus they make the medkits nearly useless so you're going into a fight with no ammo and no health and just barely floating above death on every kill, as each kill gives you JUST enough health to kill the next 4-5 imps or a hell knight. Hoping they drop enough health or God please a BFG ammo drop.

          Ya ultra violence was already hard enough for me. Just enough to be a little frustrating but super rewarding.

          I hate the demon fireballs though. By far the most damage for something small.

          Probably out of fuel. The more powerful the enemy, the more fuel it takes to kill. I'm playing on Ultra Violence, so if you're playing a higher difficulty, it may be different.

          Yeah you can kill anything outside of bosses with it...just takes more fuel for the bigger guys as the other guy said. I think some can require up to 3 or 4 fuel segments.

            I'm really glad I bought at release.

            Often in games I can really say what my favourite part of the game is, but in DOOM everything is amazing. Soundtrack, graphics, art style, monster design, gameplay, length.

            Easily TOP3 2016 for me.

                  I kinda felt bad for my brother, who bought the disc at 60euro for my birthday, and next week it's suddenly 35euro in the playstation store for the summer discount.

                  Personally, I was kinda reserved on buying it, because I've been playing a ton of dark souls 3 last, and thought it wouldn't compare. My brother was the big gamer, but we changed positions a few years ago and he bought this out of pure nostalgia and thinking I'd love it, I guess.

                  But then I started playing, and the game is just so fucking awesome, now I feel like it's a really great gift actually worth the full price. And I'll get him something at least so cool for it. So, thanks, hermano!

                    The battle system is probably the most fun I've seen in an FPS yet. Once you unlock a few weapons and some runes and hte chain saw it is INSANELY fun and tense.

                    The idea that you shoot things to kill them, melee kills to heal and chain saw things to get more bullets to kill things just feels SO good.

                    In normal games, if you're about to die you run and hide and re-gen. Now? You jump into the fucking fray and rip a guy's head off to get more health. And you keep doing that while trying not to die.

                    Man, I've finished some waves of enemies out of breathe, totally on edge and feeling FUCKING AMAZING!!!!!!

                      I think they are both great remakes of their respective games.

                      Wolfenstein was surprisingly good because of a solid story on top of the oldschool gameplay.

                      Doom doesn't need a story and it knows it (Hell on Mars...story done) there are literally several moments in the game where the protagonist gets tired of listening to audio logs and such and smashes the screen because he cant be bothered listtening and just wants to shoot stuff....and that idea encapsulates Doom perfectly.

                      But Doom is every bit as slick as Wolf, but just has more emphasis on twitchy demon killing gameplay (and is better for it)

                      Wolfenstein is a little more tactical, in that you want to use cover often, and shoot out from behind cover. Doom is straight up run and gun. Each battle essentially takes place in a closed area, and you just run around in circles fucking shit up.

                      Different. I've been wanting to write my thoughts on this game for awhile now.

                      I am a huge fan of the first two games. I grew up on Doom 1/2 and modded them, built levels, etc.

                      On one hand, it's more 'faithful' to the series in that it doesn't constantly try to get you with strange jump scares and the random demon spawning of 3. The story is secondary and it doesn't really try to be a story driven FPS. It's chaotic and pretty fast.

                      On the other hand, and this is something that I wish more reviews (and players) would state right off the bat: this game's action is based on "set pieces" - you don't just run around like in the first two games through corridors big, large, narrow, and wide, killing monsters at a pretty constant pace, grouping them or taking them on one-on-one, with total level freedom. This game locks you into set piece rooms where you have to kill a shit-ton of enemies that keep spawning until you "clear" the room and the doors unlock. The first few times this happened, I didn't mind as it was a fresh, different type of fun. By 4-5 hours in, I was so... fucking... sick of these set pieces. It really ruined the game for me.

                      That along with really long stretches of NOTHING but running around looking for items/powerups makes it hard for me to recommend this game, at least for $60.

                      But at $20-30 - why not? It's a pretty long journey with excellent shooting mechanics that is worth checking out if you're into FPS games.

                        I've been severely disappointed in most of the games I've bought lately. I came to the conclusion that they were trying to be way too serious and I just didn't need a deep existential experience right now. Doom is pure fun. I had a huge smile on my face from the moment I ripped apart the first demon all the way up until the credits rolled.

                          I loved it, but unfortunately I couldn't stop getting sick from the motion. I tried adjusting all the settings and I kept getting nauseous which has never ever happened in a video game ever, and i play a lot. I'm hoping when I get a pc I'll be able to adjust the motion blur enough to play

                                Tried the demo. Way too fast for me; a long-time KB+M person adjusting to twin-stick controls. But man, does it run smoothly! Very impressed by the game even though I'm not buying.

                                And I did get a Metroid Prime feel from it, as well. Slightly floaty, visually similar enough to comment on, impressive use of the hardware.

                                Edit: if it had split-screen co-op or deathmatch, I'd buy straight away. But it does not.

                                I hate online multiplayer. I typically play a FPS game on campaign and never touch multiplayer.

                                I just want a FPS with a single player, good campaign. I don't care for jump scares or dead space type games. I seem to remember the last doom game being more of a dark game where I couldn't see anything, which I didn't like.

                                That's interesting that someone is comparing Doom to Metroid prime.

                                I was one of the skeptics for Doom when I was playing the closed multiplayer alpha on PC several months back. The multiplayer is just... Uninteresting and not very good.

                                But the campaign and singleplayer are fucking awesome! It's a shame you can do, and find just about everything in the game in like 15 hours though. Wish there was more to singleplayer as that is where this game really shines. Brings me back to the old days of playing doom on a DOS PC.

                                This is easily one of my favorite games that I own right now. Unfortunately, if I play it for more than about 10 minutes, it makes me extremely motion sick. Like, I have to lay down for 15-20 minutes to feel okay sick. It sucks. I've only made it to the third or fourth level because I can't play for long. And I've had it since launch.                                 It's funny, I never saw it compared to Prime before and it's all over in this thread. I've almost beaten Doom, and now that I think of it I did notice that I like it because it reminds me of something...and that something is Metroid Prime. Glad to have finally made that connection! The map exploration to find hidden areas and powerups is so similar in the best way possible. It's my favorite part of the game actually.

                                Movement and general combat feels a lot like Halo 2 on Xbox to me and I mean that as a big compliment. They actually made melee and grenades just as viable as the assault and sniper rifles but don't force you to use any one style.

                                My buddy has a physical copy so I'm just going to borrow it from him when he's done but for $19.99 this a steal of a game. I've played about 4 hours and had an absolute blast.

                                This iteration is the closest any Doom has ever gotten to being "what it always should have been".

                                The 90s Doom games were woefully inadequate to the task but only because technology was insufficiently advanced.

                                Doom 3 did a much better job although it tried for a horror-scary approach rather than a horror-gore style (which the former is more dramatic but has less replay value).

                                Until VR can replace the flat screen there is not much more room for improvement with Doom 4. Where else to go from there? Bodysuit controls? Then Doom 5 might be a multiplayer online LARP experience....

                                Now if id ever made a Doom Go, that would be worth trying out for its own sake...

                                I don't like shooters, I don't care about Battlefield or CoD, but I gave the demo a shot and was intrigued enough to give this a shot when it was on sale.

                                Easily my best PS4 purchase, the rush, the soundtrack, the level design, the exploration. THIS is the model that games should be made after.

                                I mean ideally they would be creative and original but we don't live in an ideal world.
