About this project

  • Art by Sandrine Kespi, from Jerusalem, Israel.
  • To be made into 310gsm-grade linen cards.

If made by makeplayingcards, their fronts will be used, unless someone volunteers to make standard/classic card fronts. Then there could be consideration for using those custom fronts.

Starting off with 500 deck initial. Depending on the people, more might be produced.

I tried to be realistic with the pricing. If you tried to get a single deck from makeplayingcards.com, it's almost 30 dollars, after taxes and shipping. Who wants to pay 30 dollars for a deck? I assume few. However, by mass production, the company offers discounts per deck. The more the decks, the more the discount. 15 seems fair for a purchaser, and is way more than fair in this instance, as we save buyers dollars compared to if you were to buy it yourself. A single custom deck that I purchased costed me 27 dollars and change. A linen deck costs 15 before tax and shipping. That means you skip the tax and shipping. With large funding, we can make the expensive, less expensive, and even inexpensive.

Recap:

  • The product is (a) deck(s) of cards.
  •  There are several designs.
  •  The designs are actually art pieces done by someone else, not me.
  • I came across the art by googling images.
  •  I was googling images because I was looking for an image to use for a custom card deck back.
  • I wanted an image to use for a custom card deck back because I wanted to buy my own custom card deck.
  • I like cards, I like card decks, I like card deck back design art, I like to throw cards, I like to play cards, I like to look at cards, I like to use cards. Cards. Something something cards.
  • I appreciate the art/design that I discovered, I asked the owner for permission to the designs. It's still that person's property, I'm simply spreading the material, get it known.
  •  Directly/Indirectly making it less expensive to buy the decks, because companies will sell for less per deck if mass produced
  •  I don't have that level of finance.
  • If there are people who like what they see, they can help manifest it into reality.
  • I am simply someone that cropped someone's art pieces and liked how it looked as card backs.
  • I'm kind of doing this for her, in a way, but also doing it for me.
  • I figure that there would be minimal to no actual profit from this, other than that person's work being circulated and known by more people, which could increase her income, potential, among other things. Somewhat because of the small/eccentric size community of card enthusiasts/buyers. Also, this is technically a first time at kickstarting these concepts, as well as having no real guarantee or knowledge as to how many people there are, and how many people would be interested/able to chip-in.
  • Popularity could potentially cause the back designs to become universal, so that a person wouldn't have to pay 15 dollars, but instead 1/3rd or 1/4th of the price, in the near or far future.
  • Instead of having to settle for the typical standard back designs we see in stores, we can help get this out into circulation.
  • A big investor, like Bicycle, could pick it up. Generally beneficial for the artist who did the artwork, and for people who like the design.
  • The delivery isn't necessarily by Dec, 2017. It's more like (Time till end of fund + Time counting the amount of decks in total + Time counting the number of decks per design + Time making sure all configurations are right & sending them to the company + Time for production + Time for shipment/delivery to me + Time for me to sort out which goes to whom + Box & Send, several at a time, per day + Repeat until all units have been dispatched + Time you have to wait for your delivery.
  • If the fund reaches 1,000 decks, we can go for "Linen Air" grade cards.
  • Maybe in the future, plastic decks could be pushed for funding.

Risks and challenges

The story behind this is simple.

I, being recently fixated with cards/card-design, went on a shopping mini-spree. I found a website called makeplayingcards.com, which allowed me to purchase my own customized deck of cards.

I was able to choose the design of every single card within the deck, and choose the card's material. The back-design quality resulted nicely. That is, the art-work that I googled and then cropped for use of a back-design.

I asked for permission to use the image for a single deck, for myself, but on a larger scale/mass-production, that person should receive both recognition and compensation. This kickstarter is to raise the money for compensating the company that will manufacture the product, according to the design.

'Linen air' grade cards can be achieved only by 1000 decks.

I would have to pack and mail the cards to each addressee. That includes purchasing a card-board box for each address, and paying the shipping for each respective address.

The art is original, done by Sandrine Kespi. That person has the rights to the artwork, as it's that person's work. I'm simply an 'enthusiast' of cards and card-designs, and had the free-time to put this little thing together.

I'm not an photoshop user by any means, nor do I have any other production skills. That includes video, audio, and hand-drawing. If anyone with the talent/skill with Photoshop, networking, and such is able to volunteer to enhance the production in whatever way possible, feel free to contact.

The project can definitely use a card-front design. Standard card-fronts are fine, and preferred. Otherwise, the default faces/quality of the manufacturer will be done.

From seeing the card front myself, I recommend changing the front. I purchased a sample size (2 copies of each face/back from makeplayingcards.com) for my personal use/view, just for myself. I have not yet seen them, but I do have the Pomegranate-design, which looks fine.

The plastic from makeplayingcards.com has a matte finish. I did not personally see a linen finish, other than by videos. The project can be re-opened if it comes to that, or if all else, retracted.

This idea to use kickstarter sprang out after my own desire to produce those custom decks for myself. It hadn't occurred to me that Kickstarter existed until recently, having forgotten about it. Recently, I enjoy casual card-throwing, and watching card-tricks. I just like the feel and idea of cards.

I don't know where the project location should be set as, but I set it as 'Hong Kong' simply because that's what it says on makeplayingcards.com's Asia location, and apparently, my custom deck was shipped from China.

Technically, we could ask Bicycle to do the manufacturing for us, but the product is rather different. Especially when it comes to plastic cards.

I've never ordered custom decks from Bicycle, nor have I ever sent designs for which to be denied or accepted, so I have no personal experience with them. I do, however, have received a custom plastic deck from makeplayingcards.com, which came out as satisfactory.
