I simply do not buy into the idea that there is a far right fringe element separate from moderate mainstream Republicans.
It has always been there. All Trump did was make it mainstream, and hence reinvigorated the conservative base.
Conservatives used to hide behind dog whistle politics, such as George H.W. Bush's Willie Horton ad, Reagan's fictious story of inner city welfare mothers drivign around in Cadillacs at the expense of hard working whites, Nixon's Southern strategy, to Goldwater's oppositions of the CRA, to William Buckley - the father of modern day conservatism. (Here is Buckley debating James Baldwin over "Is the American Dream at the expense of the American Negro?" and Baldwin destroys him at an all white Cambridge University). It is a great debate that everyone should watch at least once.
However, my point is that the very heart of conservatism is the alt-right movement. It is not separate from it. It is not a fringe element. It is the heart of the Republican Party.
The Conservative movement has never been inclusive. It has always been hostile to change and forces that challenges the white male figurehead that is "supposedly" straight, never cheats on his wife, and never diddles little kids. If he did, God and America would forgive him.
They constantly claim that blacks and minorities don't know what is best for them. They claim that Democrats have tricked them into another form of slavery with handouts. If blacks only voted to slash taxes on super rich white guys, while cutting aid to education, health, and job training that they would be emancipated.
Regardless, I don't see an alt-right movement. I see it as the heart of conservatism.
p.s. And notice, Conservatives will only start to speak out once they realized they were being negatively effected by Trump. They don't even denounce him, but will rationalize him away. A Trump like candidacy could never exist in the Democratic Party.
