Personally, I was more than a bit miffed when he signed him but that was more due to his age and injury record rather than any concern over his ability. At the moment, I can't really make up my mind over whether he's good enough to play for us.

I think he's good enough to wear the shirt but not good enough to be a starter but his age and wages does question why he's here

A German football legend but he hasn't really done anything at United to deserve this "legend" status which means he has to play every game.

I can see why he doesn't fit into Mourinho's plans. He excelled at a box-to-box role in his day but he doesn't have the legs anymore and we've just bought Pogba. His passing ability and positional discipline isn't top drawer either so he doesn't really excel in a deeper role.

Last season he did bring a lot of stability at points, just from his presence and experience he was able to control the tempo of the game. But other times he was a liability (against Arsenal) or fairly ineffectual compared to the likes of Carrick.

He's good enough to play but not starting. Pogba always starts and I'd put Fellaini, Schneiderlin, Herrera and Carrick all before him. Then it's better to leave him out of the squad and give opportunities to youngsters

I think he can still start at one of the better sides in Europes top 5 leagues (like Schalke, Wolfsburg, Gladbach). He's good enough to play for us but we have too many midfielders unfortunately

I think people are overstating how poor he was last season. I didn't think he was that bad and had a few decent games for us. His worst game was probably against Arsenal but then he was given some weird tactical instructions that made him look even worse. He didn't look finished like falcao by any means.

That said, Mourinho is right that he doesn't really fit in to a 4231 alongside Paul Pogba.

A top quality player who can offer calm and experience both on and off the field.

No longer has the physical attributes to be a starting player for us week in, week out but I think it's a shame he can't play a supporting role.

I don't think it really, matters at this point but for what its worth he was one of our more consistent players last season. Thats not to say he set the world alight. He could still do a job for us in some capacity and is far above the MLS. Think he'd be a good signing for any team fighting for Europa League or even Champions League outside of England (e.g. Schalke) if they could get him on lower wages. His only real drawback is his fitness. Still a good midfielder and certainly no worse than what we currently have to partner Pogba.

Pogba is the guy who would do the attacking, we need someone who can win possession back and protect the defenders. All other 4 midfield players can do this better than him. He doesn't have the stamina to do that over a course of a season. Mourinho doesn't make much changes in his starting 11 usually and he wants players who are reliable in terms of injury and stamina to play over the course of the season.

I have nightmares about the Arsenal game. Just doesn't have the legs, regardless of his other assets. At best I see him as a Mikel style closer.
