Thoughts on Daley Blind ? (self.reddevils)

Hi guys, I'm a West Ham fan and I want to read up on fans opinion of Blind. As a ball playing CB ( sort of, as in the sense Sakho tries to be lol) I have to admit Blind is my favourite CB to watch and analyse for the past year where he's been transformed to play at the back. His composure, reading and passing are all very easy on the eye for me which leads me to always watching him play if I see him starting. Sure he makes the odd defensive mistake here and there but he's not a natural CB, however he knows how best to utilise his strengths in that position which is why the partnership of him and Bailly is looking very impressive. Would love to hear any opinion about him

Strength: Vision, passing, ability to read the game.

Weakness: Slow, short.

I think he compliments the physicality we have in Bailly/Smalling. And I prefer him + one of them to a Bailly/Smalling duo.

5 foot 11 isn't short

He's not naturally athletic, and is slow. That's a con.

Yup, Mascherano is also very short (and relatively slow) for a CB but his ability to read the game is fantastic which is why he's so good at what he does. Blind would've been fantastic during Pep's reign at Barca

He doesn't actually do that, he almost never makes errors, the only knock on him as a CB is his physicality like pace, strength and height, other than that his positioning, reading the game, his tackles, and passing are great.

He's made quite a few errors that seem to have been ignored.

Good player but definitely not immune from errors.

Yeah I agree, the only notable error I remember him making was against Chelsea last season in which they scored in the last minute.

West Ham away he made 2 that cost us goals and played Carroll onside by about 10 yards, he didn't score. Watford at home he made about 4 horrible errors that Ighalo messed up.

Blind has done well but let's not pretend he's perfect.

I'm surprised people don't remember Blinds performance that night, it was really bad. Maybe they just chose to ignore it to reinforce their points.

Either way Ighalo could have easily had a hattrick

Maybe it's just the type of player Ighalo is. Maybe there's just something about his style that Blind couldn't figure out.

Or of course, Blind had a bad day at the office. Either way, it doesn't make him any less of a player as there is no player in history to have 100% mistake free career.

He's made mistakes in more games than Watford. I think people like to pretend he is some machine that never puts a foot wrong and I have no idea why.

He made more defensive mistakes than Smalling for example, but that is to be expected!

I am not saying he is any less of a player either, he's done well.

He just seems to be an extremely touchy subject to people on here for some reason.

He also almost fucked up in the FA Cup final and was bailed out by Rooney but he's been brilliant I agree

You're right, perhaps it was just reading criticisms about him in articles etc. Not seen him do a cock up for example. The only thing you can say is his pace but that's not really a main trait for a CB. He's covered on that front with Bailly, Shaw and Valencia. Never knew your back line was that speedy till I wrote them out lol

I love Blind as a CB but I suggest you rewatch the 3-0 loss to Spurs and 3-2 loss to West Ham if you don't think Blind makes mistakes for starters

Great servant. Stays healthy and injury free for the most part. At first it was worrying when he was positioned as a CB but I think at this point, he feels trusted and does feel like a CB/MF hybrid cus his passing range is so good and pinpoint as well as his positioning defensively. Very rarely does he get carded and most of the time, it would be a tactical foul. I say he's been definitely worth the money and more. He'll be quietly impressing the crowd in his performance. I think he's less exposed now in set plays because of all the height we have elsewhere.

He's got flaws but I really like watching him play. He's got a lovely left foot and his ability to play it from the back has good for United. He's got good technical skill and he can actually defend quite well 1 on 1. But he's prone to being caught out of position a little bit and then he doesn't have the pace to recover. I'd say that's how he makes most of his mistakes.

He's been really good but Smalling/Bailly has to be first choice.

Blind will get exposed much more this season with more adventurous tactics and less possession.

My favourite player of ours so I can't give the most objective view.

Mostly everything's been said but in addition to it, what he lacks in some areas, he makes up for in others. He's not the most physical or tallest player but with his intelligence, reading, awareness, ability you don't need to be. He is a paragon of adaption and with his understanding and ability he can reach optimal levels for a "jack of all trades" player.
