Pierson: Trump Didn’t Flip-Flop on Immigration, He Just ‘Changed the Words That He Is Saying’
Donald Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson had a unique response to the charge that her boss flip-flopped on immigration Thursday, saying that his position hasn’t changed, but his words have.
“He hasn’t changed his position on immigration, he has changed the words that he is saying,” she insisted.
That elicited laughter from the other panelists. “That would be a change,” responded contributor Amanda Carpenter.
But Pierson braved on: “What he has said from the beginning is that he does not want to allow people to stay in this country illegally, he does want to build the wall, but he wants to work with Congress to get things done.”
“Katrina, he has said ‘get them out,’ he’s been very clear about his position,” pointed out host Erica Hill. “This is a change, this is a shift, this is a flip-flop, an evolution, whatever words you want to use.”
“No, Erica, it is the how being discussed now. He’s always said if they’re here illegally, they have to go,” Pierson responded.
But Hill noted that Trump has said before that the “how” would be a mass deportation force. “So now he is shifting. Katrina, there is a definite different message that we’re hearing now,” she said.
“There is not a different message. He is using different words to give that message,” Pierson said.
