I really, really think people should be listening to the game's music. It is very good, and tailor made to add to your experience.

DO listen to anything you like that is chill, to your personal taste

Yeah, I read that line and thought "This sounds like the ingame music to me."

[–]Crocoduck_The_Great 18ポイント19ポイント  (19子コメント)

I used to listen to video game sound tracks while I did homework because the music is purpose made to help you focus and not be distracting. Why would you listen to something else while you played?

Because I don't care for the in game music all that much, and prefer my own music. I guess other people like different things than you.

Downvotes for having a different opinion about WoW music... typical /r/wow

Yeah the ost is really high quality. Interested to see how it mixes with the content.

The OST for WoD was by far my favourite thing in that expansion

I really liked Shadowmoon Valley, the zone is just awesome.

New xp is the only time i have the wow music on for a few weeks

The default sound settings are terrible. Turns away more people than it should.

Turn game sounds waaaay down to be barely noticeable, turn ambience up, character voices up, and music below ambience. Guaranteed immersion

Seriously Blizzard does very well on their soundtracks.

Especially with the new dialog boxes.

I have a rule of thumb to turn on in game music for at least 3 - 4 months minimum of a new expansion. That shit is too good to just never hear.

I agree, especially for the first go around. blizzard makes great soundtracks

legion launch pro-tip don't take time off work for legion launch day 99% chance servers go down save that day off for when servers are stable :p

Ha, that's why I took off the whole week!

e: Sometimes you just need to be direct.

Tuesday through Friday hype.

Tuesday through Wednesday hype! That Labor Day and 9/80 schedule OP.

I got super excited I didn't even realize Labor Day was that monday so I got tuesday - monday off since I work monday through friday normally.

Yeah, my boss was actually awesome about it. My original request was for Tuesday-Thursday of that week. She saw the request and asks me "Hey, rpaulv, you know you've got the following Monday and Tuesday off because of Labor day right (because of the one day off every other week and paid holidays)? You could take that Friday too and you'd have the whole week off. Just need to find someone willing to cover your Friday. "

I took that and ran with it.

I put "nerd stuff" in the reason box for my request off.

my supervisor plays too. i asked him why he wasn't taking any time off. he said he tried but has a business trip to take. avoid promotions kids.

Only promotion I need is from revered to exalted

I wish Ravenholdt shared that same attitude... last thing I need for "Insane in the Membrane"

You have to give reasons? Seems a little mean.

same here :) boss thinks I am going away with friends.....technically we are travelling to the broken isles together :)

[–]Crocoduck_The_Great 6ポイント7ポイント  (4子コメント)

I don't think my boss has ever asked why I wanted time off before approving it. He will ask after out of curiosity. Where do you all work that you have to give your employer a reason to take time off?

Jokes on you, I don't have a job.

Yeah, it's arguably not even worth it trying to stay up late on launch night. Even if the servers are up, it'll be a laggy Zerg fest. It's probably more worth while to just wait until the following day when everything is more stable.

That laggy zergfest is the reason I stay up late on expac launch nights. I love it!

Exactly, same reason here, I love the zergfest. And anyway once you get past the first few quests it wasn't that bad. Don't know how it will work now with the "choose your own zone" thing in Legion but we'll see.

I think that it's just going to be Bottlenecked in Azsuna due to profession quests.

Aszuna and going clockwise is also the apparent way to play cronologically in the story, not that it's a huge difference

Hmm well clockwise maybe not but starting at azsuna makes sense given the geography from where BI dalaran is.

EDIT: I was wrong, looked at the map and clockwise (in a spiral towards suramar) is indeed correct.

Yeah I saw that post saying where profession quest are and it basically boiled down to "OK these 3 are azsuna, this is the other place and this other one is that other place... for everything else if in doubt pick azsuna"

Joke's on you, I don't do professions!

[–]This_Land_Is_My_Land 1ポイント2ポイント  (4子コメント)

Never cared about professions; just going to do my thing.

If you actually feel most people are going to go to Azsuna because they care about their professions, however, I know to avoid that zone.

I think another zone a lot of people talked about starting in is Stormheim, which I'll also avoid.

[–]Crocoduck_The_Great 1ポイント2ポイント  (3子コメント)

I've got so much Stormheim hype it's ridiculous. Howling Fjord, Grizzly Hills, and Stormpeak are some of my favorite zones. More Vrykul plz

Only thing I'm worried about is the sheer amount of instances launched causing problems when people rush to get their artifact - the same happened with garrisons at the start of WoD and it was miserable for a good week until it got mostly fixed.

But maybe blizz learned from that, buttheyprobablydidnt

Wouldn't we have seen that with the pre-patch quests as those have you scenario'd into your own little world?

Way less volume since all people didn't do it at the same time, plus people coming back for the launch day.

Yeh, even if I can't participate in the laggy zergfest I'm gonna rubberneck it on Twitch.

Benefits of being on a small server. I played both MoP and WoD launch, no issues for me....

[–]Rpaulv 1

Maybe for all those starting in Stormheim... but for those uf us starting in Highmountain... or Aszuna... or really any of the other zones, it'll be.... well tbh probably just as laggy until about 4-5 am when all the "energy drinkers" crash and burn.

But then you miss all the shit posting and experiencing the shit show with others! Wow launch was awful and great at the same time when it actually worked...

It's too late for me, there's no turning back now!

[–]Cendeu 1

IIRC the cata launch was incredibly smooth. There were almost no issues until later in the day, and even those were fixed quickly. Let's hope for another Cata (launch)!

That is the "pro tip" I read the most and the one i disagree the most with!

I have played every single wow launch since vanilla and several other blizzard and other mmo launches. i always take 1-2 days off, often (like with wod and now legion) i take an entire week off.

the thing is: If you "admit" to yourself that you are crazy enough to take time off work for a video game, you might as well go all the way to make that time a good one for you.

which is why i would urge op to include this in his "guide":

Go to bed at 8pm before launch. Miss the launch. Put your alarm on 3-4am.

This is the time everyone else goes to bed being frustrated from the amaount of people, server crashes, and other mishaps.

You however log in at 3am, while the dust is settling and can look forward to a minimum of 5 hours lag free and since you are online, you don't have issue with server queue as well like al the other people who went to bed at 3, slept till 10, and now log on AGAIN being frustrated, while you already finished up your first 110.

I am not even kidding, back in WoD, which was quite objectively, even for me, due to DDoS, a PAINFUL start (in eu more so that in NA) i had my first char at 100 at 7am, when people started logging in, at 10, and saw me at 96 they were asking me if it was worth it waking up at that time, not realizing this was my alt already.

On Monday i will go ahead and prepare a chili that i put in the freezer so i have some healthy food without having to order pizza, i will buy loads of water, orange juice and lemons, and while playing i will stand up every 3-5 hours and go for a run for 30 minutes.

launch time can be a great time if you properly plan it, and not just sit down and play. because that is what everyone does and that is why servers break ;)

Ok mom, jeez.

She even is telling us what music to listen to...

They're just tips, if you want to eat only Doritos, snickers, mountain dew, monster, and order Domino's, you totally have the right to !

I waited 22 years to be able to eat pizza and drink redbull whenever I wanted!

I'm using launch day as cheat day and eating pizza :)

If everyday is a cheat day, no day is a cheat day!! :D

I'm currently on cheat year #4.

This is a dangerously awesome way of thinking.

Mom.. What did i tell you about going on the internet...

Don't take drugs. Seriously, it's a game. Caffeine pills, Adderal, Speed, Amphetamines and subsequently Meth will for sure help you stay awake, but will not help in the long run.

Does not apply to "first" racers, obviously

You heard the man, all you world first folks are gonna want to get your hands on some meth if you want to be #1.

You laugh but when i went for server first DK in wrath I missed by 1hour and a bit to 2 college students tag teaming an account doing speed, they openly told me cause they were impressed that i was keeping up by myself without drugs...was ahead of them until i crashed for 2hours at 75 -.- not even grizzly hills could save me

I have to work all week, so at most I'll get in 2-3 hours a night till the weekend. So no world firsts here.

Worlds first responsible player.

lol yea part of being a single dad, my kids come first, game comes last.

Good attitude, why I should never have kids lol

[–]Overexplains_Everyth 4ポイント5ポイント  (2子コメント)

He's teachin his kids to never have dreams, to give up before you even start and how not to multitask .... /s

If I wasn't too tired I would come up with a burn about never having kids because you're a virgin or something.

Lmao. I'll pretend you did and get out the burn cream anyway

Make sure you put it on your palm since I'm sure it probably has a friction burn.

[–]Lukias 1

Right there with you man. I prefer to think of it as knowing myself well enough to not do those things rather than put a kid through my horrible parenting :/

Could be worse. Last Thursday, my boss decided to send me 2 states away for work for 2 weeks. My flight coming home lands at 11:55 PM Friday night so no Legion until I get home 2 hours later. I would take 2-3 hours without any complaints.

true that. Ill be on call the weekend of legion dropping though, so i dont know how much play time ill actually have.

Same here, I am taking that Friday off though because it's a three day weekend anyways. I'm sure I'll be able to hit max level by the end of that and have whole week and more to gear up for raids.

I'm not even going to bother logging in till the evening of the first day, hope the servers will be stable by then.

I'm okay with that :D.

Yeah same here, not too upset about it though. Server's will be unstable until the weekend anyways.

I work on a ship that routinely goes out to sea for months at a time.

Guess when we're going underway next?

Yep. August 29th.

As its pulling out, jump off and swim back. What could go wrong.

so you already have something to sink the ship? cause i know a guy who knows a guy if you know what i mean

Had 5 days off for it.

Got promoted.

Had to give up those days off.

I weep.

I'd just quit.

Second that. Legion is life. You going to stand idle at work while azeroth burns from the legion invasion or are you going to get your punk ass on here and defend your horde brothern in battle!?! LOK'TAR OGAR!

I play Alliance ;_;. But the amount of time's I've died from walking into Horde bases thinking I'm Horde, despite not playing Horde since 2009, I'm obviously Horde at heart.

Alliance, huh? Are you gonna let your king's sacrifice be in vain? King Varian would want you to put the Alliance and Azeroth first!

He was the king that died for nothing after all, you heard Gul'dan

im sorry bro. but congrats on the promotion at least!

Game's not going anywhere bro. Congrats on the promotion. You'll enjoy the expansion even more in the long-run.

Let's hope that you're not being way too optimistic about launch and we'll actually be able to play properly with no DDOS and other shenanigans.

I like the idea that the launch is spread out over 4 zones rather than the 1 or 2 it usually is. That and hardware hopefully is even more prepared than WOD

Cuts to Illidan working away in the server racks upgrading hardware

You are now prepared.

I'm hoping blizzard has a few tricks up it's sleeve to have a smooth-ish launch like Overwatch did, maybe renting some server space from Amazon !

We shall see. With the cuntnuggets trying to DDOS the servers during the last 2 days, not feeling that optimistic honestly. I'll probably try my luck with starting early in the morning when those who stayed up all night will be heading off to bed.

Don't give them to much credig. Bunch of salty script kiddies that got banned for cheating

If I remember, Mists and Cata had fairly okay launches and much of WoD's problems came down to the bottlenecking as they dumped a bajillion players in the same spot and bugs with instancing/garrisons. I'm expecting a smoother launch this time around, honestly.

[–]Estake 2

Same now, everyone will TP to dalaran at the same time and then do their personally instanced artifact questline.

Doritos, Mt. Dew, Red Bull, Pizza Hut, hot wings, and NoDoz pills. Got it! Good advice!

but if i rush through this xpac what am i gonna do for the next 2 years?

Complain about a content drought.

Nah i'm sure 7.2's instagram integration patch will be enough to sustain 6 months...

what am i gonna do for the next 2 years?

Getting AP for your off-specs. Kappa

Getting Advanced Placement classes for my offspecs? No thank you! I already need to get as much AP as possible for college as it is!

You heard the man, pick an off-spec major, and grind some AP classes for it!

Wait... Which one? I mean, there's History, Calculus, Trigonomotry, English, Biology, Chemistry, College-in-the-high-school classes...

I heard you can get a recipe in Biology to cure cancer that will sell for a lot on the ah.

Implying leveling content is even remotely meant to last.

Enjoy your game time however you like. If you want to eat an entire pizza while chugging soda while you stay up all night playing wow, awesome. If you want to do an entire 8-ball to yourself as you cruise to 110, awesome. If you want to take 5-minute power naps once an hour and do tai-chi while on flight paths, awesome.

Make your game experience whatever you want it to be.

I'm going to load up on greasy convenience store sausages and grab a box of wine. Times like this only come around once every few years.

[–]Relnor 8

Most important advice missing from this thread:

Be prepared to not be able to play on launch night.

It has happened again and again and people lose their shit again and again.

Just make your peace with it now, tell yourself, "I will try to play on launch night, and if it will work, that will be great, if not, well, I was expecting it."

For music, I have this study mix I found on the interwebs, 600+ hours worth. Its catchy, and not too hard. Its mostly light EDM.

https://soundcloud.com/thissiteisokay/sets/study-grind

Just had a listen, this is sweet - definitely going to have this in the background on launch!

Nice one! I love the description

hand selected to be excellent background music for studying

Yeah... Studying....

High in fat foods are great to eat as they make you fell very full and give you great amounts of energy, but sugar is bad yes

Don't take drugs. Seriously, it's a game. Caffeine pills, Adderal, Speed, Amphetamines and subsequently Meth will for sure help you stay awake, but will not help in the long run.

Found the filthy casual. Everyone knows that cocaine fuels 1337 m4ch1n3s.

-Water -Bananas -Metal

These are the ingredients to stay up until you're 110.

Disregard facts.

Drink Mountain Dew and DoritiosChip.

Instead of music I like to have a marathon of episodes from my favorite shows playing in the background. For legion I'll be playing some of my favorite Critical Role episodes.

I would like to rage.

Geeky side note. Did you notice Matt Mercer did the voice for the new boost tutorial alliance guard on the ship to The Broken Isles?

Did you know that he actually voices one of the artifacts too? He could whisper sweet nothings into your ear if you wanted to. You just have to play arcane mage.

Hah, I had no clue! My mage might have to be an alt to consider taking to 110 then!

Also talasin is the voice of male demon hunters, and during the new quest in dalaran, if you click on the person khagar is talking to it sounds like mercer

And of course Liam and Laura as Illidan and Jaina.

Take something that you've seen a thousand times or you get distracted and eventually just stop playing to watch a few episodes, especially when fatigue sets in.

Good guide for those who want to pull an all nighter. Each to their own but I'm gonna take my time and savour the new content.

thanks but I am sticking to my Mcdonalds and case of keystone light.

Why would you willingly put either of those two things in your body?

Like I'm all for burgers and beer, but god damn let's step it up a notch or 8.

Want to add as well, the week/day before, spend some time getting your shit together. Do some laundries, take a shower, make sure you're stocked up on groceries and that you have clean dishes. Hell, get some cleaning in general done, leave your home decently tidy.

Easier to come out after the 'launch night fugue' to a semi-clean house, rather than a total pigsty. There is a future after Legion launch, I promise!

Also, this has to be mentioned; if you need to leave your house during your legion-spree, shower first. worrying that this always has to be mentioned, more worrying still that it's almost always ignored.

What? That's absurd. How am I supposed to kill demons if I'm showering? /s

wireless keyboard, cover the keyboard/mouse in plastic, use an elaborate set of mirrors to see screen, profit

Actually orange juice is pretty terrible for you unless you squeeze that shit yourself

Are you saying you think you're actually going to get to play at launch? Have you learned nothing from any of the previous launches? Don't expect to play for the first 12 hours

If i spend 30 hours levelling i will jump off a bridge.

Dried fruit and nuts make great snacking items. Apples and Bananas are always good if you are taking a break away from the keyboard for a few minutes.

Okay, let's take this step by step.

Sleep and rest

  • If you want to game for long periods, the last thing you want to do is mess up your sleep schedule. Don't sleep all day the day before, stick to your regular schedule, and stay up only slightly later if you really want to get extra gaming hours in.
  • Get up and walk around every hour is great advice! Not to keep yourself awake, but to prevent blood clots, which can and have killed marathon gamers.

Drinks

  • Do be careful of drinking too many energy drinks - they definitely aren't good for you, and Gatorade is deceptively high in sugar, but sports drinks will keep you hydrated.
  • Drinking enough water is always good! But carbonated water won't hydrate you any more than tap water. Just drink as much as you need.
  • Coffee is a diuretic, so make sure you take adequate bathroom breaks if you're drinking a lot of it, and keep any caffeinated beverages to a minimum, and interspersed with water.

Food

  • fatty and sugary and salty foods can indeed make you feel sluggish and tired, and are often empty calories that also don't satisfy hunger.
  • Protein and some fat content will keep you feeling full and can help prevent mindless snacking while gaming. Cooking with oil won't change that, though deep fried foods are still probably not the best choice. Seeds and nuts can be deceptively high in fat, and avocado is one of the fattiest/oiliest vegetables in existence. Avocado is great for adding fat to a salad or sandwich to help satisfy hunger, but it is incredibly oily and calorie dense. Don't overdo it on bananas, either, while the potassium content can help prevent muscle cramps if you're not getting sufficient vitamins/minreals otherwise, they can also cause kidney pain or stones in high quantities. Like most things - moderation is key. A few varied fruits will give you plenty of sugar and fiber, don't eat an entire hand of bananas.
  • Balanced meals will not only keep you full, but if they're giving you all the micronutrients you need, you're less likely to feel cravings and snack later.

Music

  • Listen to whatever you enjoy. It won't affect your gaming to any significant degree, though sometimes your fingers will start typing/clicking in time with the beat.

Final words

Most of this post was complete BS, just take care of yourselves and that applies to everyone - including "first" racers (but bear in mind realm first achievements have been removed. Just enjoy the game and don't do dangerous things like let yourself get dehydrated, eat only junk food, or do drugs to stay awake.

[–]Gouca 1

You're wrong like the OP. Sugary food and drinks are the best performance booster for a single all-nighter with a normal sleeping rhythm. Your body runs on carbohydrates the longer you stay still being awake.

Why would you keep caffeinated bevs to minimum? Caffeine also boosts your performance. Caffeine doesn't 'dry you out' if your body is used to it. In fact, recent studies show it can be counted in your daily fluid intake.

You heard it here first boys, dubstep is bad for you.

As someone who worked night shifts for years (2 night shifts in a row every few days) i can confirm these are very solid tips. Black coffee, lots of water and light food and you will feel immortal.

Only thing i can add is - if you are going to drink energy drinks, save them for the morning. I personally crash very hard at around 05:30-06:00am.

An all nighter in this subreddit blowing up about how you took time off work and can't play the game due to server issues/queues/ddos attacks.

You really need all this preparation to stare at the login screen and re-enter email+password every 10 min? :O

Go to bed, servers wont be stable for 6+ hours anyway.

Get up every hour and just do a small walk around your house for a couple minutes, as well as light stretching. That will help you stay awake and focused.

Easy, I need to piss every 30 minutes anyways.

Do: Poop in a sock.

e: Seriously though, if you want to pull an all-nighter, I highly recommend preparing yourself a meal in advance that you can heat up quickly. Personally, I'm having big bowl of cubed chicken breast, broccoli, roasted red pepper, and a little alfredo sauce and black pepper.

Make a slow cooker meal if you have one. Eat before launch time and start the slow cooker, then 4 hours later (or so, depending on recipe) you have a meal literally sitting there waiting for you to eat it

Before the launch of every expansion or major patch I see one of these posts and I just wanted to say I appreciate it. It's nice to have someone looking out for people and encouraging the fight against the legion. Can't wait for the launch :D

eh I often stay awake the whole night playing and I only drink cola and eat chips those times guess thats not so good

I'm just going to go to bed early and wake up early. I'll be logging in by the time all the all nighters are drooling on their keyboards!

Dude great post. Thanks!

Where's the section about how to deal with planning an all nighter but you can't play any blizzard game because they are being DDoS'd by a 12 year old?

Beer beer and even more beer.

Jokes on all of you. Launches 5pm for me hahah

DIAPERS, why aren't they mentioned. Any time a game drops the first item on my list for hardcore gaming sessions is a case (not a 12 pack that will only last 24hrs or so) of adult Pampers.

Pampers are much more soft than Depends and also a bit more... fun (in terms of logos and colorization). Diapers allow you to level with uncannied amounts of focus. You aren't wasting time to get up... walk to the bathroom... wash your hands... walk back etc. When you feel the urge just go.

Diapers also provide warmth. Its two fold warmth when you really break it down. Its like a sweater for the groin and on top of that.. if you feel the urge to drop a deuce, well by all means please do so. Talk about a warm pillow that you now essentially have b/t your legs/groin. By sitting in your own feces it really allows you to feel zen with yourself.. and remain completely focused on WoW.

If you haven't yet raided/leveled with a diaper please do yourself a favor and try one. You will have so much more time spent focusing on the game and will be amazed at how much faster you're leveling in the long run.

Woah there, a burger is not junk food

So what you're saying is the reason I barely missed out on server first rogue back in Cataclysm is because I wasn't on meth?

What's this? Some new-age vegan diet?

Ok, eating bad stuff is bad, but just fruits, fish/meat without any oil and water? Cmon lol, you live once.

Just eat bananas as snacks instead of fat garbage, a pizza never killed anyone (maybe?).

Also, what's up with

Get up every hour and just do a small walk around your house for a couple minutes, as well as light stretching. That will help you stay awake and focused.

Sorry but an all nighter is... an all nighter, not a fitness club.

Casual af.

Oh lord, here we go again with the xpac launch tips.

  • Eat what you want to
  • Drink what you want to
  • Sleep when you want to

It's one day every 2 years, calm the fuck down.

[–]Jkpqt 3

not sure why you felt the need to make this post...

"Meat: Anything lean, like chicken, WITHOUT it being friend."

Chickens are friends not food.

For music I recommend checking out the trip hop station on Pandora or some playlist on YouTube. Usually little to no lyrics, a nice beat, and most of all: chill.

Every expansion for every game, there's at least one stupid post like this.

I won't even bother playing hardcore around launch, because I think it will be just like the launch of WoD, which was pretty unplayable. Even though Blizzard might be prepared this time, I still think it will be laggy and (for me) unenjoyable. still, these tips are nice for later! :) ty

WoD was almost completely fine 0:00 - 13:00.

It's when the school kids started coming home when shit hit the fan (broken garrison phasing).

[–]Qubis 0

I always try to be in between unhealthy and healthy, always works out for me :P

[–]PM_ME_UR_PIZZA_DOG 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Be prepared for servers going down constantly. Massive influx of players = overloaded servers

I usually grind for 14 hours with the filthiests dubsteps you can imagine
