EDIT: The admins are aware of this. Don't flood their support queues!

Let the admins know!

I can't wait for the admins to do nothing about this.

You should see how much they will do about it. There's going to be so much done about it you will be sick of how much they do about it.

Wait what does this mean? They are going to act on this for sure?

PEOPLE ARE TELLING ME THEY ARE TIRED OF INCOMPETENT ADMINS RUNNING THIS WEBSITE.

WHEN THEY SEE THE ADMINS TAKING MONEY FROM THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN THEY KNOW REDDIT IS GOING TO HELL.

What we want are admins who can win. And I think we have admins that can win.

They will build great code like nobody can build great code. Nobody builds code like they do. And they will make the_donald campaign pay for it.

When the_donald sends its people they are not sending their best. The_donald is sending its bots, and its /r/redpill rapists, and some, I assume, are good people. One of the problems we have is that good people don't go to the_donald. That's why it is such a disgrace.

But believe me. I think, ultimately, the admins will make reddit great again.

Even the female admins, you know, even with blood coming out of their wherevers, can be good when they aren't so emotional.

We have the best admins, folks, the greatest admins. Aren't they the greatest folks?

[–]LepontineTrumpster fire 127

The people over in the_Donald, they have no education, no Healthcare, no opportunity. What have they got to lose by vote manipulation? I tell you, believe me folks, you browse that front-page and become afraid that you might get shot.

Incredibly crooked, crooked people. Believe me.

We have to go to Bill Gates and ask him about what's going on, and get his help to maybe close up some of these internet areas. Really wicked people folks. Obama? He's been doing nothing about this. nothing believe me. And I have a lot of people - very smart, credible, anonymous people- who tell me that he's the founder. Obama is the MVP and I mean that literally. And by that I mean sarcastically. But not that sarcastically.

Bill Gates.

The guy who wrote a book about the future of computing in 1995 and completely forgot to include the Internet. Which was already 30 years old at that time.

[–]AlmostatimelordI'm still laughing at the Trumpettes. 13 Year olds dont scare me

They might ban a bunch of users, but don't expect them to quarantine or ban /r/The_Retard. They can't afford even the appearance of partisan impropriety on reddit's part.

We are talking about the biggest subreddit for one of the major party candidates. Banning it would become a major news story and the Trumpettes get to cry about "crooked liberal media" and shit.

I expect the admins will allow /r/The_DumspterFire to burn until Trump loses the election in November and the /pol/ trolls find something else to occupy their time.

So fucking what? They broke site rules. You don't get immunity from being vaguely connected to the election.

Yup. They should be banned and quarantined just like /r/fph was. A campaign build on stupidness and hate should not be tolerated, even more so with* the reddit rules being broken.

It's an interesting conundrum.

I called it months ago that reddit is still too goddamned autistic to realize they are being trolled by 4chan. Ironically that post was downvoted into oblivion.

But now we have a situation were those trolls have actually cornered the admins quite well... If they act against the blatant trolling then they must create publicity for DT, the anti-liberal.

Wtf can they do but just let it run its course? Which really only represents the lesser of two evils, the trolling from that sub is potent stuff for histrionic Millennials. Allowing it to continue to spite Trump still keeps him top of mind and only has the benefit of quarantining that effect to reddit and not creating a big stink that will run on Breitbart and every other nationalist rag. But then again at least that stink would burn bright then disappear, as opposed to the slow burn of meme magic from now until November.

"MAJOR SOCIAL MEDIA SITE BANS GIANT PRO-TRUMP DISCUSSION BOARD"

The alt-right is already good at pushing the "we're being censored" crap, this would give them way too much to work with. Yes, anyone who actually looks at the facts will agree that they don't deserve to keep their sub. But fake free-speech outrage spreads way too quickly online.

The best we can hope for from admins is that they continue to push back to a moderate degree: keep them from monopolizing /r/all, ban individual offenders, etc.

Very little people in the real world have any idea what /r/the_donald is and most of those that do think it is satire. I really don't think that there would be any real backlash other than a garbage shitpost storm for a day like when /r/fatpeoplehate was banned and a nasty article from breitbart, who nobody really cares about. I just don't see reddit losing on advertising or appearing unfair. In fact I'm sure the Trump ads would remain.

I don't favor deleting a sub just because of who it supports, but at this point /The_Delicate is coontown/Stormfront, so if the admins are going to pretend to have some kind of policy where there's a basic standard of human decency expected, they should apply it evenly. That sub is a cesspool of overt racism and online harassment.

It is crazy how far they can bury their heads in the sand. Oh, they're very high energy, let me tell ya. This is yuge!

Let's do this!

  1. Vote manipulation is against the site rules
  2. The definitions of vote manipulation are:
  • Using multiple accounts, voting services, or any other software to increase or decrease vote scores.
  • Asking people to vote up or down certain posts, either on Reddit itself or through social networks, messaging, etc. for personal gain.
  • Forming or joining a group that votes together, either on a specific post, a user's posts, posts from a domain, etc.

.3. This script being used

  • Is software used to increase and decrease vote scores.
  • Posted on the social networks, 4chan and 8chan, asking to upvote or downvote certain subs.

Besides brigading obvious friendly / unfriendly subs

  • The group then upvotes and downvotes specific subreddit and users' posts.

This is vote manipulation, admins.

[–]TomatoHere👌 100% Spooky Jazz Wizard 👌 273

Yup, that explains a lot. I'm sure lots of us are targeted users. What a good week for ETS, first we b8 the mods at the_dingus and now we have proof of vote manipulation. Keep up the high energy!!!!

I'm just laughing at how much t_d whined about censorship on reddit, yet here is another piece of evidence they commit censorship abroad in other subs, to silence dissenting opinions. If they want to have their confined safe space, that's one thing, but running amok with their dishonest and cheating tactics is a whole new playing field of deceit.

I don't think it's working. I'm not getting heavy downvotes. (yet)

I think that auto -1 we get these days, is just part of reddit's vote blurring algorithm. I think they switched it up a couple weeks ago, and now it can auto subtract one or more right off the back.

Sandsforprez. occured naturally as a movements among likeminded people, while sometimes annoying it never had a sever ideological conflict with the userbase. /r/the_donald on the other hand...?

It's so clear that this entire scenario is just trolls from /pol/ and stormfront targeting an site because of the political leanings in it.

I hope stupid fucking antics like this don't get RES kicked from Reddit once and for all.

Aside from automatically tagging people, this has nothing to do with RES. Banning it would break one feature (which could easily be replaced) and the rest would keep working.

Also, because RES is a client-side thing, it's pretty much impossible to ban unless reddit becomes a flash or java applet.

Seems like this only uses RES to take advantage of "never ending Reddit". That way it can tab, click, tab, click pretty much indefinitely. If you take away RES, they'll only be able to hit 25 posts at a time.

No wonder they threw a hissy fit when the admins changed the algorithm.

Remember, they could've written and deployed this script in response to the algorithm changes.

I doubt there's any great way to see when they started executing it, but, there might be.

Meanwhile, if they're doing this, they likely had a script that was gaming the old system anyway. I knew such a large number of redditors couldn't possibly be Trump supporters!

I doubt there's any great way to see when they started executing it, but, there might be.

1a. Find users who upvote a lot in r/T_D

1b. Examine the script to see what time interval between upvotes it uses.

2. Scan accounts identified in 1a for strings of upvotes with the interval identified in 1b.

3. Look for the earliest of these strings of upvotes, that's when it started to get popular among T_D users. (Identifying the actual very first implementation would involve skipping 1a and applying 2 to all Reddit accounts.)

[–]wonderful_wonton 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

You would characterize the behaviors, and track them with some kind a state machine. Like detecting network hackers.

They don't give a shit about reddit. They're using it as a tool. They live at 8chan and 4chan /pol/

These are people supporting a man who said he was going to talk to Bill Gates about locking down the Internet. Don't be fooled into overestimating their intelligence. :)

I think it can be equally as dangerous to underestimate their intelligence. Look at Ted Cruz, Robert Mercer, Ben Carson -- you can be extremely intelligent or capable in one domain and batshit crazy in others. Those people (like technically competent Trump supporters) scare me much more than the ones whose intelligence I'd overestimate.

I'm not under-estimating Trump supporters simply because I disagree with them. In fact, this is the first time in my 25 years as a voting-age American where I've honestly thought supporters for the other side were less intelligent than me. Sure, I've joked about it in the past but plenty of very smart people voted for Bush, Dole, Bush Jr, McCain, Romney...

Yes, it's usually tactically wise to assume your opponent is at least as intelligent as you are. In Trump's case I truly think it's more accurate to assume his American supporters are mental lightweights. The polls and stats even support it.

Nice detective work! Can add "cheating the system" to the already existing "it's a hate group" on the list of reasons the sub might deserve to join the "blacklisted" invisible subs.

Knowing Reddit there would be a colossal shitstorm about censorship if the sub was indeed hidden though. I wonder what other possible actions Reddit could take. Perhaps new ways to detect voting patterns that are clearly and obviously targeted vote manipulation?

Perhaps new ways to detect voting patterns that are clearly and obviously targeted vote manipulation?

I think they might already have this; it could have been part of what they did with the front page algorithm a while ago. From an administration standpoint it's not necessarily a bad idea to detect wrongdoing and then instead of completely banning and hiding things, just cordon off the detected crap so it doesn't deface the public face of the site; this way the people doing the vote manipulation still feel like they're getting away with something and might not feel the need to step up the creativity of their hackery and vandalism as soon.

But I'm pretty much just talking through my hat here.

Hey there I heard you were talking about shilling. Here is a little something so that you keep it under wraps. Shilling is hard work, but we get a lot from the Saudis to make it all worth it. They even gave us a nice office. Have a shilltastic day.

Did you let the admins know?

That's not a botnet btw.

You are right, this isn't proof of a botnet itself, but it is proof that the script can be attached to a simple botnet for vote manipulation. This is just proof of massive votegaming using a script.

I mean, I will do it right now (actually, I just sent it), but this has going on for months - they don't really care, or don't have the tools to detect it themselves.

Otherwise they would have stopped it and banned those involved already.

they don't really care, or don't have the tools to detect it themselves.

If the admins actually enforced the rules, T_D would've been banned forever ago. I get that stuff is holding them back in some ways with handling it but it's just surprising that so few actions ever seem to be taken against a sub that breaks that many rules.

the trump supporters are mindless automatons so technically it IS a bot net

Why would spez care about a little old blatant vote manipulation tool like this?

Let's not start tagging spez, he gets an incredible amount of harassment and tagging spam from /r/the_donald redditors. I will let this one go, but I don't want to see a chain thread starting it. I have reported it to the admins, whether they do anything with it is up to them (don't even know that spez is responsible for vote manipulation).

Plus, like literally every other CEO, he delegates tasks to other departments. Send this to Trust & Safety, the community team, or ping/pm achievementunlockd.

Pinging spez will never get the desired effect

Im starting to also think the number of subs they have may not be legit either Someone should probably investigate that and see whats going on.

Wow, good find.

Yeah, this is big. Really good evidence of just how desperate these people are for their shitty sub's posts to be seen.

The funny thing is increasing the visibility of the donald posts just makes Trump supporters look awful.

I am a web developer. It would take just a few hours to create such a script, I think. Shouldnt be that difficult.

The script posted does add two menu items, but I dont see the code that does the up and downvoting. But it sounds not too hard to write that, just loop through the upvote or downvote buttons and click them from code.

The code that does the up and downvoting is right there in the screenshot.

// Select the first div with the up class and click it
// On upvote, the div no longer has class `up`
// So when repeated on a timeout, it will iterate through posts yet to be upvoted
$("div.up").first().click();

I think this is something reddit admins could feasibly detect with a little bit of analytics querying and retroactively ban. Human behavior is much more stochastic, so constructing a time-series of differences can give you insight (moreso the more it's used)

SET @vote_type="upvote", @subreddit="the_donald", @lower_s=0.300, @upper_s=0.650;
SELECT prior.user_id,
prior.vote_id,
prior.timestamp,
next.timestamp,
timestampdiff('second', prior.timestamp, next.timestamp)
FROM user_votes `prior`
LEFT JOIN (
    SELECT user_id, vote_id, timestamp
    FROM user_votes
    WHERE subreddit = @subreddit
        AND vote_type = @vote_type
) `next`
    ON (prior.user_id = next.user_id
        AND next.vote_id = (
            SELECT min(vote_id) FROM user_votes `compare`
            WHERE compare.vote_id > prior.vote_id
            AND compare.user_id = next.user_id
            AND subreddit = @subreddit
            AND vote_type = @vote_type
        )
    )
WHERE prior.vote_type = "upvote"
    AND prior.subreddit = @subreddit
    AND next.vote_id is not null
GROUP BY prior.user_id, prior.vote_id
HAVING timestampdiff('second', prior.timestamp, next.timestamp)
    BETWEEN @lower_s AND @upper_s

I completely agree with this redditor, isn't he the best folks? I know many of those words. Those are the best words

Btw do you know how this line works:

function get_rand(min, max) { return Math.floor(Math.random() * (max - min + 1)) + min; }

yeah, so take two variables min, max (100, 300).
The return scheme looks like 100 + floor((201)*[0,0.9999])
So this returns a min of ~100 and a max of 100 + floor(201*0.999) = 100 + 200 = 300.

So this function basically just gives you a random int number in that range, because the Math.random() function returns between 0 and 1.

DELETE THAT SUB!

This is a very good find. Did you let the admins know?

Does this break any of Reddit's TOS? Doesn't sound like it would serve any purpose besides vote manipulation if this is allowed.

Well, vote manipulation is banned by the Reddit ToS.

Running $("div.up").first() in the console throws an error saying that first isn't a function. $("div.up") shows the next upvote button in the console. $("div.up").click() clicks the upvote button. So either that script wouldn't work, I'm missing something or reddit admins have already broken the script.

Edit: I'm going to assume the thing I'm missing is greasemonkey.

It works in firefox. For whatever reason the chrome console jquery doesn't have this function even though it was introduced in like 1.4 or something. It could also be that it's not getting jQuery selected which would then default to getElementbyid (which doesn't have a first method on its return)

I have to be pedantic, sorry: this is not a botnet, this is just a script that lets users vote en masse. A botnet is a large number of computers that are spread out and act in coordination based on a signal being sent via some control pathway (how that happens I'm not entirely sure).

Can /r/the_donald finally go the way of coontown?

Seriously- it's the same mentality, same people running the damned thing.

Just pull the plug already.

TBH at this point I just don't know what to believe anymore. According to reddit it's basically CTR shills vs. Hired russians/KGB. Are any real people even involved in these subs anymore??

/r/the_donald: complain about fraudulent voting during election, proceed to vote fraudually on reddit.

Knew it all along. Guarantee it- it goes deeper too. Paid.

Funny funny stuff, tiny people who live in tiny worlds, with tiny ideas and tiny minds. I pity them.

This isn't a political discussion it is a matter of intelligence. If you honestly support trump; you are unintelligent and a part of the problem.

Using JavaScript to do mass upvoting is nothing new. These kinds of scripts have been making rounds for as long as I can remember, and I first started using Reddit in 2007... Reddit has countermeasures that silently negate this kind of thing. Theres honestly nothing to see here.

Which is why Trumps AMA went from 15k upvotes down to 2k after the admins negated all the botted votes lol.

I can't believe they banned r/fatpeoplehate yet this shit is allowed to exist

Who the fuck wants to win if you have to cheat to do it? Turns my fucking stomach.

Boy, it's been a long time since I bothered with this bullshit. It hasn't been easy staying out of the Trumptardation striking reddit. But frankly they aren't worth bothering with.

I'm not surprised the people who complain about shills the most are actually said shills themselves. From /pol/ to Stormfront, T_D is a subreddit that's been invaded by Trump supporters from all over the internet in order to "uncuck Reddit" (aka, push the alt-right agenda), so to speak.

Fantastic find despite your title being misleading. Too bad there's zero chance the sub will be banned due to this, or for any reason in the future. They've extremely blatantly brigaded other subs before (the worst I've seen in 4 years on the site by far), repeatedly, and the admins took no overt widespread action.

They are even doing it on Disqus. Go to the comments in this article. Look at frankgrey765's comment, its the top one with the NBC link. All his upvotes are from accounts with no comments and painfully fake usernames. The link leads to malware
