Just to play devil's advocate:

I COULD actually see it being 'more anticipated' but not in the way everyone here is thinking (postive). I am actually in the back of my head looking forward to see how this shit show goes for CoD Infinite Warfare and likely have zero intent to purchase either it or BF1.

Really at this point the game launch is going to be huge news one way or another. People are all going to be clamoring to find out if it is really as bad as they were expecting and ready to shout out it being a surprise hit or massive failure.

IF it does well it would be a massive 'comeback' story from falling into the depths of the internet hate circle and somehow come back from that. IF it does bad then it could be a huge shift in the industry for a massive titan falling and opening up more space.

[–]TheNamesVoxi7 4790k/ MSI GeForce 1080/ 32G RAM DDR3 185

I feel like CoD is almost "too big to fail", like ya the last half a dozen (how ever many sense MW2) games have been declining but they still sell a ton of copies because everyone knows about them. Ya tons of people are hating on it now but so many people don't look at that stuff, they're more casual and are gonna buy it anyway.

Exactly, I think people here underestimate just how much more 'they are in the know' (and really even then they aren't) than the average consumer.

Heck I have seen people at a bar when Destiny was coming out think it was only for PS4 because the Ad showed the Playstation logo and completely ignored at the end it still showed the Xbox sign.

Many people are just going to only really hear about the game in the last month or two before launch from TV ads and facebook/twitter post. And many of those people likely won't care enough and still just pick it up because that is what they do.

[–]TheNamesVoxi7 4790k/ MSI GeForce 1080/ 32G RAM DDR3 62

Exactly this, and I think its a major reason a lot of really popular games coming out now are kinda, shit. A lot of people aren't looking around or waiting for reviews they are watching trailers and seeing ads then buying it, see Battlefront. A lot of people aren't voting with their wallet and this "casualness" is hurting gaming, take NMS for example. Hello Games promised all of this stuff and we got a bare bones game that felt like a early access indie game, not a AAA $60 title but a shit load of people still bought it. I don't mean to shit on casual gamers, more uniformed consumers, these massive studios can push basically anything with ads and trailers because no one wants to do like 5 minutes of "homework", and its just causing more and more studios to do the same thing.

Sorry about the rant its slow at work and this shit gets me heated.

[–]piedude3Eh, it's pretty good

Honestly, if someone didn't know what battlefront was, it was their fault for buying it. I mean, there was open beta out months before it's release, and everyone knew what it was. While a ton of people hate EA, at least you know what you're gonna buy. BF1 has an open beta coming up soon, and I'm sure everyone will know what to expect upon release.

I felt like a dipshit for a while after that. Especially since it took a lot of neighborhood yardwork to buy a game back then.

My brother calls CoD "the Madden of shooters". They release practically every damn year, upgrade very little in regards to the actual substance of the game, and still sell like gangbusters year in and year out. I'm sure the franchise will come to a close eventually, but even one really bad title won't be enough to do it. It has such a rabid core user base of relatively casual gamers that it'll just keep chugging along long after it should have died.

On a side note, though still related, what is it about this one that has people riled up? I've been fairly OOTL in regards to gaming lately. After Destiny, Star Wars Battlefront, Halo 5 and Dark Souls 3 all lacking the staying power I was hoping for I've drifted away from gaming a bit. Yes, I'm a console-tard. Lol

I think they are more intimidating then anything. I played Madden and a couple of NHL games back in the day, despite the fact that I don't give a shit about hockey or football. I never really understood the deeper aspects of the game (such as when to pick what play in Madden) but I got ok at the basics. Plus in today's world of YouTube tutorials for fucking everything you could probably find someone giving a point by point break down of the best way to play.

Don't get me wrong, CoD hasn't innovated since MW2 and has gotten pretty stale, but there honestly is quite a difference in feel to the games by the different developers, especially Treyarch and IW.

Black Ops 1 and MW2 felt very different, so did Black Ops 2 and MW3, and the same for Ghosts and Black Ops 3 (I'm leaving Sledgehammer out of the discussion because they're new and I avoided Advanced Warfare like the plague)

In that sense, CoD isn't really like Madden. The game does feel different the next year because it's made by a different developer. But IW is probably the worse so Infinite Warfare will almost definitely suck ass.

I don't know about "too big to fail" but they definitely won't just die off after one poorly received game. Maybe sales will slowly trickle down to the point that they're not yearly, then space out some more, and maybe eventually fail.

They're the Apple of video games. They reuse stuff that's been out for a whIle now, maybe add a couple of "innovative" gimmicks, and then throw out to the public, where, for some reason, people think its the greatest.

The survey was based on intent to purchase so it's not just asking people what they were most interested in.

It's just a poorly conducted survey. They only surveyed about 100 people which is too small of a sample. Most likely the people surveyed were all from the same location since the sample is so small. On top of that they only asked PS4 and Xbox One owners.

The survey basically showed that around 33 people wanted to buy Call of Duty while around 26 wanted to buy Battlefield. In typical "journalism" fashion that was turned into a click bait headline saying Call of Duty is the most anticipated game.

There's a bit more info about the survey here: http://www.investors.com/news/technology/click/most-anticipated-video-game-is-out-of-this-world/

[–]EggheadDashAMD FX-8350, AMD R9 290, 16GB RAM, Arch Linux/Windows 7 24

And I get the impression a good chunk of the dislikes are just from CoD anti-fans who just want to see it fail. The target audience will still buy it.

Yup, it actually shows more of why Youtube's Like/Disklike rating system is so awful.

It is way to passive (and useless in this case) of a feature to actually get meaningful data from it and IIRC some organization put that dislike trains get insanely popular and once a video falls below a certain threshold of dislikes in the first few hours it is essentially all downhill from there.

FFS even look at LinusTechTips where they commonly joke on go ahead and dislike certain videos because they know full well how much of a joke like/dislike gets on certain things.

Edit: It is just like basing something JUST on the results from a complaint/opinion box, people are much easier to put in complaints but really only put praise when their expectations are unexpectedly blown away.

[–]GloryHol3i5 4690k | GTX 780 | 16 GB RAM | NZXT 5

I think we're slightly overlooking why it was hated on so much... It wasn't just that the original reveal trailer was bad but also it was the first reveal for the game that you had to buy to get the much more anticipated modern warfare remaster. The bad business model (or genius, really) is really where all the hate came from. St the end of the day it's still a call of duty game, will sell millions and do just fine. But they won't get my money until they release mw stand alone

Honestly, I probably won't buy either of them. I am just going to get titan fall 2. I loved the first one, but it wasn't terribly popular and I was into starcraft at the time.

I only play Call of Duty single player campaign

The game is correctly criticized for it's on-the-rails experience. However, if that's your thing few other games pull it off as consistently. I'm with you on this one - I love me a good and mindless blitz through a CoD campaign as much as I enjoy a mindbending session of The Witness.

Even though the multiplayer experience is run-of-the-mill and samey, it is basically the mutant offspring of FIFA and Unreal. FIFA is a massive economic success, and Unreal play is extremely skillful so far as M+K is concerned (in a unrealistic way, sure). Not my thing, I enjoy more realistic gunplay.

Kinda wish you could get the two halves of the game separately.

[–]Jaggedmallard26AMD Phenom X4, 7850 2GB edition 6

Kinda wish you could get the two halves of the game separately.

They tested the waters for it with Blops 3 and the multiplayer only version and most of them have had the Multiplayer and Campaign as a separate exe and steam entry for a while now so I wouldn't be surprised if they start offering all the parts separate in the future.

They really are one of the few franchises able to pull off the action campaign, they're not the most intelligent of plots and they're on the rails but fuck are they fun, I still find myself replaying them when I can't be bothered with anything else. Other franchises that try to ape it instead of making their own thing like recent Battlefield games always end up falling flat. On the note of them being on the rails more recent ones have felt more open with blops 3 providing some pretty open levels at parts and IW looking like it has a semi-open campaign.

BF4 has a buttload of DLC-related content yes, but none of them are essential, and vanilla probably has the largest community in Battlefield. That said, BF4's DLC content (maps, and weapons, etc) is great, and based off of Battlefield's track record with me, I'd be happy to buy BF1 DLC unless something goes drastically retardo with that game.

4 has been the most supported, most played, most successful entry in the series. I also loved 3.

Tbh I imagine you must be one of those people who comment "This will never compare to album XXX" when a band or musician shares new music.

Things change over time. So is life.

I don't follow your analogy, there are plenty of bands that I like their older albums more than their newer stuff.

I don't have a problem with bands or devs changing their sound/ gameplay, but it doesn't mean I have to like it.

/u/jackty89 is completely in the right if he doesn't like the direction that Dice has been taking with the series, its an opinion, deal with it.

This is coming from someone who has played the games since BF2. Look, I love the series, and I reaaaally like 3 and 4, but there is no denying that 3 and 4 have been made to cater to a more casual audience and I can completey see why some veteran players enjoyed the older titles more.

It's like you hear all the time about people enjoying vanilla wow way more than wow today, even though it was been updated with more features and visuals since vanilla. It's because there is something about having to be invested in a game that is enjoyable.

I don't blame the devs for trying to make it more palatable to the casual player, but it doesn't mean we have to like it.

I really miss BF2/2142 gameplay. Using a past-war setting doesn't really mean they changed the gameplay back, it actually seems more like COD than the previous games, running and gunning around, low TTK, bunch of automatic weapons in a war were swords and horses were still a thing...

I really don't like were battlefield is going.

....Just because a ton of people disliked cod's video(s) doesn't mean a shit ton of people won't buy it, especially since you need to buy it to get the remastered cod 4.

I'd put money on IW selling more than BF1, regardless of whether or not it's the 'better' game and has better reviews.

COD will still out sale Battlefield. Sometimes the loudest people on the internet don't represent what the majority of the population wants or thinks. I would argue that millions of COD players don't even pay attention to anything going on I the Internet.

This post is, imo, cancer.

Basing popularity on one isolated study is as stupid as basing it on YT views. YT views do not represent what people necessarily want. The trailer might have been more popular.

Also, remember when BF4 released and this sub was crying their hearts out over how buggy and shitty it was?

And now many people upvoting this are wooing the new game all over again over a popularity contest.

I'm gonna be honest, I was more excited for BF1 when I heard "World War 1 game!"

But after seeing the trailers and gameplay? I have no interest. Its not a WW1 game. Its a WWII game with a WW1 skin over the top of it. There is a ridiculous amount of full auto weapons and other ridiculous things that were pretty much never used. I don't recall seeing a single trench in the latest trailer.

It plays like every other battlefield game ever made. And after the terrible game that was Battlefront, I have no interest in a DICE game that also doesn't really give me anything new.

The joke used to be that every Call of Duty is the same, year after year, but its really the same for Battlefield now too.

And I think the stupid meme campaign to dislike the Call of Duty trailer was just loony. Most of the people who I saw complaining were complaining that it wasn't a game set in the past, and I thought "God forbid Call of Duty do something different for once"

This whole circlejerk of "hur dur Battlefield #1, Call of Duty is shit" is just childish.

I don't plan on buying either game.

I haven't played a CoD game since the first Modern Warfare due to the quality dipping by such a large margin.

Basically circlejerk, but people were hoping for something other than another future shooter, but they fail to realize all three studios were likely slated for 1 future game each and this is the last one. Most of these people are also forgetting the hullabaloo raised when World at War released due to WW2 saturation.

I might be controversial here but I don't really care for either. I think BF looks the same and seems to play the same all-in-all but now with old timey weapons and handlebar moustaches.

Futuristic settings I think work way better with games like this, it gives an easy excuse for whacky new technologies and game mechanics, so kudos to COD for sticking with it even tho fan reception wasn't the best.

Bottom line, if anything I'll probably look into titanfall 2 on release and hope there's more than 5 minutes of player retention compared to the 1st one...

I don't think either game looks that good, but Infinite Warfare doesn't aggravate me quite as much. BF1 claims to be set in the First World War, but people are still running around with automatic weapons and there's barely any proper trenches to be seen; anyone with even a passing acquaintance with military history can see a problem there.
