I would give it around 7/10 (without mods) on PC and 8/10 (with mods) because I haven't encountered any of the performance or stability issues. If I encountered the frequent crashes that PS4 players did it might be 5/10

I have at least twice every time I play the game.

I've actually had to get in to the habit of flying to the space station after every black hole just to save it, didn't do this one time having fixed up the warp drives and gone through 3 black holes just for it to crash....never been so angry with a game this much.

Summary:

The good: Music is awesome, the use of color is amazing, gameplay and pacing is on point, freedom to do whatever you want, a sense of purpose.

The bad: Crashes and framerate issues.

The score is absolutely ridiculous but it's not the only questionable review.

Yeah I liked Tomb Raider and Battlefront they are not even close to a perfect game and neither is NMS.

I don't think the outrage is that its a good score, more that a 9.9 (out of what I'm guessing is a 10 point scale) seems quite generous. While it delivers on scale, the game comes incredibly short on features (for now).

HG is definitely not going to waste any more money on this game, since they already got the bulk of their sales, and they pretty much can't recover from how shit this games launch was. They'll probably just put it towards their next project, or pocket it.

That would be the smart move. Maybe we'll get lucky though, and they are dumb artistic types that can't see the writing on the wall and will waste their windfall money on improving the game. Maybe we'll get even luckier, and what they see as improvements will actually be improvements.

Oh I agree, I'm really enjoying the game and the promise of what they can bring with future updates has me incredibly excited. But you can't give a game a 9.9/10 simply because of what may or may not happen in the future. Personally I'd give it no more than a 6 now, but if they deliver content in the future (to include some of the features that we were told of prior to launch that didn't make it) I'd definitely raise it.

Professional reviews aren't meant to be one person's opinion, though. It's an objective look at the product. Even if the reviewer loved the game, it's his job to distance himself from the his personal opinion and point out flaws and potential issues other people might have with the game.

Well, yeah. Because I've played the game and it sucks. So I know that somebody who gives it a 9.9 has to be wrong. How is that complicated? Besides, the top voted posts here are from people that actually like this turd, and even they are saying 9.9 is way too high.

Of course some people love it. You can say that about virtually every game that exists, no matter how bad it is. What does that have to do with anything?

I'm really enjoying myself with the game and don't have any absurd delusions about "lying developers" and all that nonsense, but you're correct. This game is objectively not a 9.9 even if you grade it on an indie scale and not AAA scale. Let's take many design criticisms and depth/variety of content issues and put them aside for now because just based on a technical level, the game has far too many problems, even after 3 patches, that cause crashes and freezes to be scored that highly, I think.

Even once the technical problems are fixed, then there's still so many valid criticisms. I'd say the game is about a 5 or 6 out of 10, and yet it's a lot of fun and I'm interested in how it changes over time if they continue to work on it. I still look forward to playing it for hours just because the basic gameplay loop is fun and the planet surfaces are fantastic, but just because I like it and have fun with it doesn't mean that allows it to fail to meet criteria for higher scoring.

As others have said, due to the nature of the game, and the hype factor, the reviews and results are going to cross the spectrum.

For starters the game was WAY over hyped. A lot of things were never promised, merely mentioned as possibilities and yet people took them to be gospel. Others expected far too much from a small studio and failed to grasp that delays were happening for a reason. Yes Sean did mislead us on some points, but unless you were "Stalking" him and HG, and following every piece of information and media/fan speculation, then you really did not see that much of it.

If you just expected what the original intent of the game was (relaxed pure space exploration in a procedurally generated giant space environment), you came away likely enjoying yourself a ton and having a blast.

The other thing people are forgetting is that this game is "RANDOM". Some people started on amazing planets in amazing systems. Others went through 10 planets before finding more then a few crappy creatures or plants. I know it took me 4 systems and 15+ planets before I found a "lush" planet with large dinosaur like creatures and an amazing environment. I found it worth it. Others might of given up after 6 planets and said "this game is shit, wheres what we saw in trailers?".

Because of the randomness, some people got a bad taste from the start, others had patience, and others got lucky. This means people could have a VASTLY different early view of the game and some might give up.

On the Ps4, my woman got a shit planet, I got a life filled amazing planet with sea creatures.

On PC, she got the nice planet with life and I got a toxic wasteland. 120+hrs in and im 160k light years from the center and still loving the game.

9.9 from me also, only the crashes the first couple days were an issue. I have been loving it since then.

The people that are butthurt rushed to get to the center of Euclid and came to the conclusion that the game sucked. People like me that are chillin, exploring our suroundings, are lovin it.

It all depends on what you bring with you and what your expectations are. What I've noticed is that most people who enjoy NMS for what it is did not get caught up in the hype, nor did they watch/read every piece of media about the game. As far as they are concerned the game delivered on it's promise that's on the back of the cover. While i fall into this category, i did watch a few trailers her and there but i wouldn't give it a 9/10. It's more of a 7/10 for me. Very enjoyable but flawed.

I was excited for the game as soon as it was announced, but didn't tried to avoid trailers and gameplay. It's an exploration game and I didn't want the environments spoiled for me. I do wish there was a little more variety in the models, but overall I really enjoy the game and feel it delivered on the core concept. It's not the perfect game everyone wanted, but it's good. :)

I did watch all the videos and stuff since back in 2013 and here I am, giving it a solid 8/10 just because the stuttering makes me feel like smashing the monitor on my head. when that's fixed it's a 9. when new deeper content will hopefully come in a year time it might very well move to 10 and join The Witcher 3, Fallout 3, Antichamber, Monkey Island, Another World, etc.

Not working at all for many/most folks on release,

Failing to have multiplayer even though it was advertised,

Outdated cartoony graphics,

NPC's that can't move and interactions with them that consist purely of multiple choice quizzes with irrelevant rewards,

I don't understand the surprise with IGN giving an undeserved/inaccurate score. It's been well established that they are paid off for scores via PR and marketing.

As someone that visits IGN on a weekly basis, primarily for FYI's about new games, I didn't see many ads for NMS on the english site, hence it's 6.0 rating (along with it warranting around there). I imagine that there was more ad space purchased on the swedish site, hence the inflated rating.

I have been enjoying myself and it took me 15+ planets to find a lush nice environment planet with large creatures.

Do I think it was worth $60? Yes in terms of the time I have spent playing but no in terms of the game content. Its more of a $30 early access feeling to me.

If I had to rate it, I would give it a 7/10. Ive enjoyed myself, but do see the flaws and was hoping for more. But I would hardly call it bad.

To be honest, based upon what I know about Swedish culture, a 9/10 or higher is expected. This game is right up their ally (A relaxed free form exploration game).
