Unfortunately American history classes tend to make a caricature of every religion that isn't Catholicism. You are in good company.

I would say that many do worship him as a god, but not as "God". Buddhism isn't a solid, unified religion so you will encounter many discrepancies among sects.

I remember my public school history class taught Buddhism fairly poorly, stating how Buddhism was a monotheistic religion that believed in a single creator God.

Another class of mine taught that the book Siddhartha was an accurate depiction of Buddhism, despite the character Siddhartha realizing Brahman at the end and arriving at the conclusion that everything is relative to the observer.

I'm not sure if you are trolling, but Buddhists do actually worship Buddha as a god. The only ones who don't are post secularists who don't take the historical content literally.
