Seems like Mourinho has worked out how many players he wants across competitions this season and filled those spaces. He's also on very high wages for a League Cup backup player, in this instance it would be in our interest to sell him.

Pure speculation here because none of us really know but here are some possibilities I can think of off the top of my head:

  • His relationship with Mou has already soured so Mou doesn't want him around at all, negativity in the camp isn't good for the whole squad
  • His wages are way too high to be a backup player
  • Maybe he doesn't want to be a backup player and wants to start
  • Maybe he isn't even in good enough shape to play backup

You wouldn't be able to rely on him for even those matches. Would get injured.

You could play a youngster instead to gain experience or rotate our many other midfielders instead.
