The U.S. Olympic team now has 100 medals at the Rio Games, the sixth time in the last seven Summer Olympiads that they've reached the century mark.

Dailiah Muhammad winning gold and Ashley Spencer winning bronze in the women's 400-meter hurdles Thursday night were medals No. 99 and No. 100, respectively.

And when American athletes have won, they've won gold more often than silver or bronze: 35 gold, 33 silver and 32 bronze. Next best in the medal count? China with 58 (20 golds), followed by Great Britain with 56 (22 golds).

Now the Americans have a shot at history.

The U.S. record for medals at a non-boycotted Olympics, as well as for an Olympics on foreign soil, is 110 — set in Beijing eight years ago.

And there's still three days left, with some medal locks such as the U.S. women's water polo and U.S. women's basketball teams, both of which are assured no worse than silver.
