José Mourinho has really turned things around at Manchester United. After winning the Europa League and narrowly missing out on the EPL title to Chelsea in his first year in charge, United were a force once more and very much a team on the up. Mourinho proved this in 2017-18 when he went on to dominate, comfortably winning the league and beating close rivals Liverpool who finished 2nd and Manchester City who finished 3rd.
The 2017-18 transfer window was a relatively quiet one, with Mourinho deciding to trust our promising homegrown talent, with Gribbin the stand out player promoted to the first team but yet to make it as a regular starter. The only major signing being Brazilian Right-back Fabinho, from Monaco who we tried to sign the previous year.
Despite MUFC's domestic dominance, the return to the UCL proved to be a bit of a reality check, getting thoroughly outplayed in the Quarters against last years Runners-up, Bayern Munich.
The squad is young, still has potential to improve but the likes of Bayern, Barca and Madrid are still a different class. Mourinho has been handed another war chest, the League title and return to the Champions League has helped boost what is already the most profitable club in the world. Wayne Rooney is considering a big money move to China after failing to hold down a regular position in the team, losing his captaincy and no offer of a new contract.
The team that lost to Bayern looked like this.
Tuanzebe is on the verge of replacing Smalling as first choice and Fosu-Mensah has become our first choice holding midfield player, with Fellaini and Schneiderlin proving to be very capable backup and alternative options.
Januzaj failed to impress during his loan spell at Sunderland and was subsequently sold, along with Wilson, Rojo, Jones and Darmian.
Depay and Martial are constantly battling for the LW position, with Lingard, Mkhitaryan and Mata competing for the same position on the right or as our 10.
Ibrahimovic followed Carrick into retirement leaving Rashford as the clubs new no9.
We're now a bit light up top and as good as Herrera, Schneiderlin and Fellaini do in the EPL they were exposed on many occasions in Europe, how and where do we improve? 💭
