Brisbane boxer Trent Broadhurst must overcome American Shawn Miller’s vast experience and lifetime of memories
BIG American Shawn Miller brings a lifetime of boxing experience — and the memories of a young Mike Tyson — into his international battle with Brisbane light-heavyweight Trent Broadhurst at the Eatons Hill Hotel on Saturday night.
Miller was just three when Tyson’s legendary trainer Cus D’Amato approached Miller’s parents, Bob and Lorraine, to help him showcase the wild young heavyweight who learned to box in a boys’ home.
Lorraine worked as a receptionist and helped Bob not only raise a house full of kids, but work on his Tri-State promotions, putting on small shows around Albany, New York. D’Amato knew they were renowned for their honesty and industry and the fact they put on well-run fight cards.
Under the guidance of the Millers, Tyson became the most talked about young fighter in America, winning his first 17 professional fights by knockout. But a year later Cus D’Amato had died, Tyson was the world heavyweight champ and the fighter had switched promoters to the electric haired entrepreneur Don King.
Taking a break from his fight preparations this week, Miller said ``Ever since I was little I’ve been around boxing. My father worked with 15 or 20 world champs. Since I was born I was raised in the boxing world.’’
Miller, 34, arrived in Brisbane last week full of confidence with his esteemed coach, John ``The Iceman’’ Scully, a former world title challenger, who fought some of the best super-middleweights and light-heavyweights of the 1990s, including Olympic gold medallist Henry Maske.
BRISBANE scaffolder Trent Broadhurst takes his next big step on the international scene against American Shawn Miller at the Eatons Hill Hotel on August 20.
Miller has a record of 15 wins and a draw in 18 fights while Broadhurst is 17-1 with 11 KOs. The Brisbane fighter, who spends most days working on skyscraper construction, is looking to improve his world ranking of No. 12 at light-heavyweight (79kg).
The big August fight program also includes rising stars April Adams and Mark Flanagan on the undercard.
Interesting Mark Flanagan gets a mention on the Broadhurst card for August 20th, when he is also listed on the Green card for August 3rd??
