Is Blind now the favoured CB over Smalling?

It looks like Bailly has cemented his position as main CB

Smalling has to start when fit, absolutely no question about it.

Why does he? Genuinely? Bailly has been nothing but superb since coming in and his ball playing ability is greater than Smalling's is, he is more composed.

Blind appears to work really well with Bailly and was imperious vs Bournemouth, he's another player with great passing and building from the back.

With those two, our general play increases two fold as we can quickly move from defence to attack via their progressive passing. Smalling is a great defender, but he's not on either of their level's regarding passing and ball playing.

Bailly is a physical monster & has reasonable distribution but he is a bit like Jones, just a bit more refined. He likes to toss himself into tackles to get the ball off the opposition, & yes he's done okay thus far, but tackling will only bring you so far & there is much more than that in defending.

At the moment, Bailly is going to need someone fast & composed to partner him in the best case scenario. If he loses a tackle at the back, the partner must be quick to react in mopping up whatever comes through.

Blind excels in take-ons because of his tactical awareness, but he loses out when challenged on pace or when he is outnumbered. On the other hand, I think Smalling edges him in this aspect. He's stronger, faster, & that leadership aspect to shore up the back line is a major plus.

Of course one can argue that Blind has better distribution than Smalling does, but I fail to see why we need two defenders that excel in distributing the ball forward when long balls are not our primary game (and we are nor playing a Guardiola system either). We are going to have Pogba in the middle of the park to bring the ball forward, & pacey fullbacks in Shaw & Valencia to bomb up the flanks.

Don't get me wrong though, I do rate Blind very highly but I just don't think he can keep Smalling off the starting spot. He might be the 3rd choice centreback though & will be looking to displace either of Bailly or Smalling for this season.

Trouble with blind is as we saw last season, you end up playing your team to suit the limitations of a CB who isn't tall, that strong, and whilst he holds his own well he isn't someone you can rely on defensively unless he has others to cover for him.

You have to account for his lack of pace whether that be the fullbacks holding back or a midfielder sitting further back than they would , same for height if you expect the striker to beat him in the air you have to allow for someone to chase the rebound , with the other two you expect them to win the ball in the air and so the midfielders can play in a way to expect the ball to be headed to them rather then chasing it elsewhere .

Terry and Cahill weren't amazing on the ball and they did fine under Mourinho.

This line gets rolled out every time, but it's completely false for me. Blind makes the same/if not less errors than Smalling or your average centre half does. People harp on about Blind's physicality and pace but he rarely gets exposed by it. People struggle to name a lot of moments were Blind made serious mistakes.

Terry has always been a really undervalued ball player, he's got good range and can use both feet with ease.

You can't play Smalling and Bailly in the same starting eleven. That's a recipe for disaster.

It needs to be Blind + one of them.

Spot on, Smalling and Bailly are more defensively orientated CH's than Blind is and we need Blind's passing for our build up play.

And for me there's no way Bailly can be dropped right now, Smalling should not walk into this side.

Right but he did have a few of those games last year. All CBs make errors but I feel like when Blind makes an error, he's making errors that whole match and has a total shocker. Chris has a mistake in his game too but in the games where he makes those mistakes, he's otherwise very solid.

Only time will tell, but Jose will be very aware of Smallings performances these last two seasons. Personally I see Blind losing his spot as the season progress.

Playing Smalling and Bailly would be like having two tanks on cruise control.

You need that intelligent driver, and Blind is the closest we have.

Smalling will be Mourinho's first choice, it's obvious.

He prefers 'specialists' over versatile players, and that's exactly the case.

It's been two games, with Smalling not even being able to be selected yet. Just wait and see. Talking about players cemeting their positions this early on is premature.

I think we should continue to play players until they stop performing. So for now leave Bailly and Blind, when one of them has a bad match or two, replace them. Every player should be like that. There are enough games for everyone to get a chance and it let's us find our best eleven.

Smalling should start no matter what. I think Bailly and Smalling is gonna be our CB pair and that Blind will be the backup if someone is injured or in games where you want to rest players.

Smalling was poor in the second half of last season. He doesn't just walk into the team.

For me, Blind has to start. Whether that's in defence or midfield is a different question.

He was very good until LVG switched from zonal man-orientations to rigid man-marking. After that his performances took a turn for the worse.

Agree, which seems to be a very unpopular view point. He got caught too tight to Bolasie man to man in the FA Cup final and as a result had to fell him down and take a red. Could've done better with Deulofeu's cross in the Semi Final too. There were other incidents in the league too, I think Blind had a better 2nd half of the season.

I think overall Blind was more consistent, but he had a small hiccup right at the end of the season. Could've been fatigue?
