Here's a summary courtesy of duckroll from NeoGAF:

Summary of the Tabata statement from the video:

  • FFXV went gold the other day, and that was planned to be the version they ship on Sept 30.
  • That version of the game will be playable at Gamescom, and they are cutting a 30 minute gameplay video to be released on Aug 16 showcasing the performance of that version.
  • They planned a massive Day One Patch for the game which would further polish the game and fix lingering issues.
  • But they have decided that instead of pressing the current gold master and delivering a day one patch, they will instead wait and use that completed version as the final gold master.
  • Hence the game will be delayed to Nov 29, but they will be adding even more stuff on top of the planned fixes of the day one patch.

tl;dr - The game is delayed because they believe not everyone has internet connectivity and they don't want them to be left out of the perfect FFXV experience when the game ships to stores.

Would rather they delay it and fix these problems to avoid a massive day 1 patch. Nothing pisses me off more than getting a game only to find it has like a 1 or 2gb patch that I need to download on my slow arse Australian internet, which usually takes me an hour or 2.

Delays to fix problems to avoid day 1 patches are acceptable. Especially when as a result we will get more content as an apology.

Just remember, if they chose to delay it, it's for a good reason and lets hope for a better game.

I'm not going to call anyone out, or ask that apologies be made (unless you think it's warranted), but I really hope some self reflection is done. Some of the stuff being said was down right embarrassing.

    The original speculation was that it would be released this year, but because of Scorpio it may be a moving target now.

    I think that was the hardest day of his life, but at least he had the courage to come in front and tell us. I'm not going to cancel my preorder, why the f would I do that? This is going to be a great game, even 2 months later. Maybe even better that that. Even if I wanted the rumors to be false, there's nothing I can do about it, neither everyone else for that matter.     Gamestop employee here. I work at Gamestop and thus am an industry expert and insider and informant and since I work at Gamestop I can tell you that, without a doubt, this game is NOT delayed. But I'll ask Doug, boss, tomorrow when I go to work for sure.

    There was a lot of stupid shit from both sides. People blindly assuming that it was definitely delayed after the first gamenesia post and then others blindly assuming that it's not delayed because news sites can be wrong.

    I think the majority were silently hopeful that it was false, but wary that it could be true and were simply waiting for Square's confirmation.

    Kotaku, who has also been reliable, stated they confirmed it with their vetted source, a different one, who also continues to be reliable.

    So, you're going to have to be a little more specific on your logic.

    At least tell me, do you know why these leaks were all posted by these sites which have no good articles other than leaks? I'll give you a clue, it's not because good sites don't have sources!

    Aw heck, I'll tell you. Kotaku, gamenesia, gematsu... They're all gutter sites. Most articles they post isn't news, it's biased rubbish written by someone who gets paid for how many clicks they get in total. They want to spam out "content" as fast as possible. They leak this stuff because they want to get clicks, they do not care about the integrity of the site, about the quality of their content, or even if it's wrong. They don't lose credibility, they had none in the first place.

    The official sources from companies, once something gets leaked by a site, stops working with that site. That's why you also never see good articles on these sites that are actually about official announcements. They're always late and rushed rubbish, like the rest of their content.

    Gamenesia and Kotaku's "sources" were completely unconfirmed before this. Gematsu' was the only source which had actual proof of their source before this. Kotaku would lose nothing trying to corroborate Gamenesia's post, they'd just say that their source was deceived or some shit. Gematsu, however, would lose credibility of their sole source so they were a bit more reliable here. Still, though, they could've simply been wrong and it wouldn't have mattered one bit to the sites. They still got their clicks.

    But like I said, you don't understand how News sites and "news" sites work. I don't really expect you to after this. Enjoy your blind following of gutter news, I'm sure it's something special.

    The problem is you can't just say Kotaku isn't a reliable source for leaks based on their other content. Their other content and leaks are not mutually exclusive. Jason Schreier, in particular, has a stellar history with being correct on leaks as does Patrick who is now over at Vice. Being blacklisted by a company, and having a source are also not the same thing.

    You can call them gutter sites, rubbish, clickbait, CPM-based or anything else, but when it comes to the content of leaks specifically, you have to decide if you can trust them, based on who is writing it and who they are saying their source is and in Kotaku's case, Jason's history is flawless.

    Firstly, yes I can say that. Like I said, they get paid for clicks, leaks are clicks - a lot of them.

    Jason does have a good history of posting correct leaks, you're right. If he worked independently from a site that generates revenue by uploading garbage, he would have far more credibility with these leaks. As it is, however, his Square source was so far unconfirmed. Like I said, the only response to this should've been caution: he's been right before, that doesn't stop him being wrong - he also works for Kotaku, but that doesn't stop him being right. Blindly trusting him is a sure fire way to being burned in the future.

    And you're right, they are different things. However, sources could tell you literally anything they wanted to. They could even be deceived themselves. Even in huge fields their sources are sometimes wrong.

    Like I said, the only reaction you should've had to the leaks is one of caution. If you're one to follow these leaks and take them completely to heart, you should still understand that they're never confirmed until the official source releases their statement and, because of that, there's no reason to care about the leaks until the official source does say something. It's just pointless. If they're right, you find out when the official source says anyway so why would you care until then?

    That wasn't the problem. The evidence was shady at best and derived from an obscure, small gaming journalism website whose rumor reporter cited his source as "a close friend who worked at GameStop". That's all the rumor had going for it, that and Kotaku.

    As you've been told countless times, the evidence wasn't shady, the source had been reliable in the past when they confirmed the original September 30th for FFXV, the release date for Star Wars Battlefront and the 3DS Gamestop trade-in deals. You've also been told this is exactly how it happened with No Man's Sky's delay. Later, physical evidence was shown and separate sources confirmed at Kotaku who didn't work at GS and who also has a reliable track record. Also, the words "a close friend who worked at GameStop" were never used, or anything remotely resembling them.

    Basically he said the "Master Version" of the game is already finished, but they want this XV to be the utmost/perfect/highest quality of Final Fantasy, but they think that the game hasn't met this goal yet and if they do release the game at 9/30 they will have to release a big "Day 1" patch, Tabata-san doesn't want the players to experience this so he and the team decided to delay the game for a little bit to polish it to the highest quality possible for releasing, so anyone please don't worry, the game will be awesome!!!!!

    Amusingly enough you could look at the reactions to NMS and say they're delaying in response to that. The game is probably in a bad enough shape without the patch that they'd be crucified if people tried playing it without it.

    This way they ship a better retail copy and can also optimize more during the time between gold and release.

    Well I usually rule out rumors until an official statement has been made. Still optimistic about coming on end of September. And I generally dislike day one patches, I won't mind them, I would rather have avoid them.

    The delay makes me wonder if the testers found a game breaking glitch or something if it warrants a patch or something.

    Well, I'm certainly not surprised by this. Let's see what has been delayed this year that I've wanted: Uncharted 4, and Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. Last Guardian will now be my next game in October. So now in November for me it's Watch_Dogs2, Nintendo Classic System, and XV.

    I kinda brushed through reading the rumours, ready to accept either outcome. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't hope it was false information. However, I can accept this. Would I prefer a Day One patch? Yeah, because a confirmed-high-enough-quality game being available soon can't be bad, right? I can tell it was a hard decision to make, but I can deal with this. Two more months of work being put into the game is more good stuff/optimization, after all. It did kill a little hype, but I'm still buying it.

    Whatever just delay it another year but that product better include all the DLC. No point releasing the game now if these people don't own the internet for the DLC. Also add a better magic system. Its lack luster the way it is. Also some more kinds of weapons would be nice also. There is only like 6 or 7 weapon types. Add a scythe and fists/claws to that list.

    I really like this comment.. I agree it really isn't going to be the revival anyone would hope for.. When I first starting loving this franchise, there were already 7 different games out. Now we're barely up to 15, and it has taken 10 years, who thought that development cycle was a good idea? Bravely Default the best Final Fantasy games we've gotten in 10 years but they're not even Final Fantasy;

    Yeah, the thing is I am a huge FF fan. But I'm NOT a fanboy. If I think something is up I'm going to call them on it. Games with extended development cycle rarely fair well. Sometimes they do but I'd say 70% of the time is a bust.

    Thing is, that isn't even fully the developer's fault. We the consumer over hype things to the point that NOTHING can meet of skewed expectations and companies bank on this and add fuel to the fire. It's a vicious cycle on both fronts.

    I know I'll probably get down voted to hell for saying those things but I stand by them. Do I think the game will be good, maybe even great? Yes. Do I think it'll be the second coming of JRPGs that so many fans (not everyone) thinks it'll be. No.

    We as a video gamers need to temper our expectations and the industry needs to step back from the over hyping and under delivering of games. I think more transparency on their end would help in that respect.

    I agree, many players have high expectations, to the point where most of the triple A games that release become disappointments. We need to be reasonable.

    However, I'm open to the idea of XV being the 'second coming' of JRPGs, popularizing the genre and FF series once again. It happened with VII, and granted the industry was very different back then, but this is a new kind of FF we're getting. It's possible, but then again it may not be. We'll see in November.

    I've gone ahead and cancelled my preorder. As pathetic as it seems, I actually planned my vacations around this release date, so this is absolutely disappointing.

    And sorry but I have to say this, this delay might not be a big deal but those who say it's a good thing are complete morons, from whom you should distance yourself. A game being delayed because it's isn't where it should be is absolutely fine, but it's the developers job to make sure it's ready by the time they announce a release date. It's their fault for failing to deliver on the date they announced and the game not being up to their standards is their failure. You've waited 10 years, what's 2 months? I planned this to be my final game before quitting altogether but now I won't even touch it. Hope all the best to those on this subreddit who aren't moved by this announcement.

    We're not excusing their failure, we're just accepting the state of things and believe that if the game is in dire straits a delay is a good thing because otherwise we'd get a broken game.

    I see no point in being worked up about it. They messed up and they'll lose sales because of the delay, simply because of the date. Most of us still eagerly await the game though, so while disappointed we just want to play a good game and as long as we get one, it's all good.

    I'm sure they realize that it's a failure on their part to deliver on the original deadline. Just remember, it only hurts them, not the players. People will get the best experience possible without any need for a substantial day-one patch.

    It's my bad for being angry and posting the same thing on two different posts, but the "best experience possible" should already be ready. I understand those who aren't too let down by this delay, as I am. But please do everyone a favor and don' say it's good thing. It's them trying to fix their failure.

    Day 1 patches are a shitty standard, and I'm glad SE sees that, but just because they're not doing something bad doesn't mean that's they're doing something good.

    He clearly said the game was going to be delayed...so yes, I believe I did. That's a silly question. I understand what he's going for and it's not world changing event. I'm not going to doom say or flood the boards with crying as it's not a huge deal. Just going to drive down the road of disappointment till probably mid-end December due to not getting free time once the holidays start reeving up.

    With that said still can't wait to see the 30 min preview.
