African men have a reputation of holding the prestige of patriarchy in the society and more importantly, in their homes.

They are the heads of the homes and their voices alone, puts things in line.

But in a twist of events in the 21st century, the number of men subjected to gender-based violence by their wives is increasing exponentially.

Chairman Maendeleo ya Wanaume organisation Nderitu Njoka made a damning revelation which if it is anything to go by, Kenyan men are in real trouble.

Njoka, Thursday, said scores of men are subjected to torture and physical assault by their spouses (wives) but are too embarrassed to come clean to the public.

He said instances of men being assaulted are on the rise, yet only a few cases get to see the light of  day.

In a forum at a local television talking about gender-based violence Thursday evening, more than half of the viewers engaging the panelists were men decrying violence leashed unto them by their wives.

Their responses were shocking some of them saying they have no say in the family. Violence has become a part of the love story the family once enjoyed.

With these revelations coming to light, more needs to be done to stop gender-based violence across the board.

Njoka noted it is important for lobby groups to take concern with men who are battered by their wives.

He said GBV again men should be treated with the same gravity GBV against women is treated with.

In the same vein, men who are assaulted physically by their wives have been urged to come out and report these cases without fear of victimization which has made the situation worse.

The revelation follows a sad story of a Machakos woman Jackline Mwende, 27, whose both hands were chopped by her 30-year old husband Stephen Ngila on flimsy grounds that she does not bear children.
