Manager Watch: Mourinho vs. Guardiola

Eric Bailly shines at Bournemouth as Jose Mourinho begins with a win

Eric Bailly had a commanding Premier League debut as Manchester United beat Bournemouth 3-1.

Manchester United were worthy 3-1 winners at Bournemouth on Sunday, as Jose Mourinho got the win he craved on his Premier League debut with the club.

Although there's plenty to work on, there's plenty of promise. And plenty of excitement too -- £89.3 million man Paul Pogba will come into a winning team. Goals from Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic sent United on their way and although Adam Smith's consolation was disappointing from Mourinho's point of view, this was a fine win to kick things off.

Positives

United's football wasn't breathtaking but it was still far more interesting to watch than anything the fans witnessed under Louis van Gaal last season. Mata's goal will have taken the pressure off him with the constant rumours that Mourinho wants rid, despite the manager's protests to the contrary.

Ibrahimovic scored on his debut, yet again, to keep any potential critics quiet. This was a good performance and the fact it came without Pogba will have the fans excited.

Negatives

Mourinho would have preferred to see his team keep a clean sheet in a game they were dominant in. David De Gea had next to nothing to do all game, so it's disappointing United conceded.

Manager rating out of 10

8 -- Mourinho got his team selection right although it was surprising to see Rooney last so long after a disappointing performance. It would have been welcome to see Marcus Rashford brought on for his pace or Henrikh Mkhitaryan earlier for his creativity.

ESPN FC's Craig Burley breaks down Manchester United's solid EPL season-opening victory, but stresses there is still work to be done.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK David De Gea, 7 -- The goalkeeper didn't have much to do over the course of the game and couldn't have done much else to prevent Adam Smith's consolation. With 30 seconds of injury time remaining, he suddenly had a lot to do. He made a great save from a corner and then came out well to block a further attempt.

DF Antonio Valencia, 7 -- Put in a brilliant ball to Ibrahimovic early on but his most important contribution was his ball in to the box which led to the second goal, headed in by Rooney.

DF Eric Bailly, 9 -- An excellent debut for the young defender, 22. He was strong and held off players well. He played the ball out of defence with authority and showed his quick and aggressive nature and although he may yet have a few mistakes in him, as he adapts to a new league and country, he looked totally composed.

DF Daley Blind, 8 -- Kept up well with Jordon Ibe's twisting and turning in the second half to put in an important block. He also made a vital tackle to stop Ibe going one on one with De Gea not long later. Was slow to react in the lead up to Bournemouth's goal though.

DF Luke Shaw, 7 -- His poor touch in the box led to an early chance but other than that he put in a fairly solid performance. There weren't as many great runs forward as fans had seen at the start of last season, but he put in a good shift.

MF Ander Herrera, 7 -- The Spaniard saw more of the ball than any player on the pitch. He made a crucial tackle with 10 minutes left to play which stopped Bournemouth breaking.

MF Marouane Fellaini, 7 -- Ran around a lot more than we're used to and made a good contribution to the team's performance. He put in tackles, won challenges in the air and helped United defensively and on the attack. It was a far cry from so many of his performances when he's looked like a total liability.

MF Juan Mata, 7 -- A surprise starter for Mourinho's first game considering the rumours he isn't fancied by the coach but he justified his selection. He set up Rooney for United's best attempt in the first half an hour and his perseverance paid off later when he made the most of a Bournemouth mistake to put United a goal ahead. He was taken off with 15 minutes remaining.

No.10 Wayne Rooney, 6 -- Lost the ball too easily, as United fans have become accustomed to seeing. He struck a shot from inside the penalty area too close to Bournemouth goalkeeper Artur Boruc and in the second half did well to outmuscle his marker but failed to convert the chance. He was able to salvage something from the game for himself when he reacted quickly to head in United's second goal. Should he lose his place when Pogba is ready?

MF Anthony Martial, 6 -- Had United's first chance of the afternoon after running confidently at the Bournemouth defence before putting his shot well wide. And it was his attempt that he drilled in to the ground that led to United's second goal. There were a few good runs but it was largely a quiet afternoon for the Frenchman before he was replaced with five minutes left to play.

FW Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 7 -- He didn't make much of an impact on the first half, which could largely be attributed to a lack of service. In the second 45, though, he grew in influence and flicked the ball on brilliantly to create a good chance for Rooney. He took an excellent free kick that forced a top save from Boruc, before putting United 3-0 up with a long range effort which he clearly enjoyed.

Substitutes:

MF Henrikh Mkhitaryan, N/R -- Brought on for Mata with 15 minutes left to play. He showed a few decent moments and clever control of the ball.

MF Morgan Schneiderlin, N/R -- A late substitution brought on with the intention of seeing out the game.

MF Memphis Depay, N/R -- Delivered a good ball in to the box after being sold short by a Fellaini pass.
