blind and smalling are 2 different players with different styles, maybe thats why?

Blind is a lot better on the ball and much better suited to pick a pass that's for sure. We'll miss that option at the back if he is dropped but Bailly seems confident on the ball and lets not forget how good Smalling was defensively. He was shaky towards the end and at the Euros after he worked like a dog throughout the season for us. Played the most number of minutes of all our players. Fatigue got the better of him after February but he should be fresh now and should always start over Blind imo.

Don't forget he was good last season as well until he wasn't against the overly physical and the overly pacey forwards of the league. He will be targeted just like last season by the Deeneys and the Manes of the league and will cost us points if he starts every game.

People say this all the time yet he also had Lukaku in his pocket as well as Kane the first game of the season.

The biggest difference for me is that when Smalling makes a mistake it is Smalling having a bad day (for example at Newcastle), but when Blind makes a mistake it's him not being a good enough centreback because he is not physical and quick enough.

People need to understand that Blind compliments a Smalling or a Bailly very much because he can organize a defense very well and he is always a safe option for the defense to pass to. Smalling and Bailly are very much alike and both right footed.

Why not enjoy the competition instead of making choices beforehand without having ever seen the result of a pairing?

I am sure Jose would select the best option we have depending on what kind of opponent we are facing.

Hes had a very good season and it looks like it's continuing , you can be fast and brainless or Phil jones his game suits Bailly more than Smalling will imo

I sort of have a worrying feeling that we lack a leader back there in the defence. Bailly doesn't speak English perfectly yet, and I don't know if Smalling is the leader personality wise back there. Smalling - Bailly is definately the best centerback pairing we have as of today. But I believe that bringing in Fonte could be a smart move.

I agree with the starter of this thread that Blind could be weak against certain oppositions and cost us points if he starts every game. And I don't think Phil Jones could stay fit a whole season.

Blind is the kind of player Pep would die to have. His ball playing skills and passing range is awesome.

Play him in midfield Mou, at least once and see how it goes with Bailly and Smalling behind him.

Blind had about 4 bad games last season and he played close to 60. He rarely ever struggled with physical strikers. I remember him handling players like Lukaku very easily. He wasn't "found out" half as many times as people claim. I personally think he is a very good CB and its healthy to have competition for the position. If refs were more vigilant as well, it'd be Smalling we'd be calling the liability. Lets be honest, how many times should we have conceded a penalty with Smalling doing his best John Cena impression during set pieces?

I want whoever is impressing most on the pitch and in training starting. That may be Blind, might be Smalling or Bailly.

Can you name me a game or a striker who Blind struggled against least season? Because I'm struggling.

Ighalo, West Ham away (seemed to struggle with anything that night), Wolfsburg in general

[–]BloodyMess111 0ポイント1ポイント  (4子コメント)

Ighalo didn't score against us last season. The entire defensive structure was a mess against Wolfsberg and he was clearly knackered against West Ham, he'd played almost every game last season.

Ighalo could have scored about 5 goals at Old trafford, that wasn't your question. Ighalo caused Blind massive problems that night, I've given you an example of a player don't make excuses.

West Ham he was awful, no excuse.

Wolfsburg he was awful, no excuse.

He did his job well on the most part but those games he was atrocious

Players have bad games. All of them.

[–]BarbadosDMLord Scholes 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

Ok, what has that got to do with your original question?

[–]BloodyMess111 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

You've named 3 games out of 50 odd. Hardly convincing. You can pick any utd player and find 3 bad games!

One on one positioning or stepping out to defending he's one of the best in the Prem but he gets caught out when defending balls coming in from the wing inside the box. If he can adjust to sorting that out then I don't see why he can't be one of the best all round.

People were clamouring for Hummels but he's about as quick as Blind. You don't have to be quick to be a great player but you have to be able to read the game better.

When Blind first started playing there I was dead against it but he's proven me wrong. He makes mistakes, sure, Rio and Vidic also made mistakes. I can't remember too many goals last season that were the direct fault of Blind. Although I will say the aspect of his game you mentioned does need work.

Off the top of my head the West Ham game at Upton Park. He was horrible. He also struggled a lot against Deeney and Pelle and Smalling had to cover for him. Defenders have bad games but the problem for me was at times teams seemed to target him and Smalling had to work extra hard so that Blind wasn't run over.

He was clearly knackered against West Ham. He'd played almost every game last season. Watford scored 1 goal against us last seaso, which was a pen so he couldn't have struggled that much. I can't really remember the Southampton games too well. I think he should be judged on his current form though and he's doing well.
