[Discussion] What should be our CB pairing? (self.reddevils)

After todays match I was really surprised at Bailly and how good he played. He was very physical and effective in the back, and stopped a lot of attacks from Bournemouth.

But on the other hand Blind played once again a terrific game, and showed that he is fighting for his place on the first team.

So my question is what CB pairing would you like? Bailly and Smalling for that extra muscle in the back, or Bailly/Smalling and Blind for both psychality and great passes and build up play.

Too early to call imo. Blind and Bailly look good atm. But tbf we haven't seen Smalling this season under Mou.

The solution is to play blind at cdm. Alongside Herrera and pogba in a 4-3-3. But that's a pipe dream because of Rooney.

That's a bit too risky. Would replace Herrera with Fellaini and then it might be a bit more balanced. Unless we are all out attack mode. Then Herrera-Blind-Pogba is what we would do.

I disagree. He's not mobile enough to play there. He is fantastic as a ball playing CB because he has a lot of space and time to play those nice little through balls. He has the whole pitch ahead of him.

As a DM he would be under a lot more pressure and his lack of physicality would be more of a problem. We already saw him play there in 14/15 and he was underwhelming.

Blind and Bailly. Alliteration aside, Blind provides the perfect level of game intelligence and positioning to cover a more rash and physical Bailly or Smalling. Bailly however edges Smalling on both pace, calmness and control. And he plays the ball better. So for me, Blind and Bailly is the best combination we have

Anything with Blind in it until he get's figured out. His reading of the game is beyond doubt. That 1v1 today was outstanding. Blind Smalling again and Jones/Bailly or Fonte/Bailly if rumors are true.

If we're getting fonte , then I feel jones' position might be under severe doubt. He won't play more than 20 games... That too to just rest the folks ahead of him occasionally.

I doubt he has ability to read the game, make interceptions and make those intelligent forward passes of Smalling and Blind

We have no idea. He may well have. He needs to take his chance in the EL.

Well, he's never shown it in all of his previous games... His tackling ability is beyond doubt and so is his physicality... But he has been found wanting when trying to pass the ball

But I agree with you, he needs to take more chances in the league cup or EL

To be honest this season is Jones make or break. We are so stacked at defence it is ridiculous. Smalling, Bailly, Blind, TFM, Rojo and Phil Jones. Now that another defender is coming, Jones needs to show that he can perform and most importantly be injury free this season.

Personally I don't think he will make it, obviously I want him to, but I just doubt he won't pick up an injury.

Completely agree. I always liked Jones because he wears his heart on his sleeve and Is a no nonsense type defender... But if he's not doing his job effectively, then it might be the end of his stint at United.

Really want him to succeed and hope he takes his chances this season

I said a few days ago Blind is our best passer of the ball. And I stand by it. Most teams want a ball playing defender and because of how well he reads the game, against smaller teams it should be Blind starting.

Against the top teams id go Smalling and Bailly.

Agreed. For the weaker teams we can have Bailly/Smalling for the agressive defence, combined with Blind to ensure a better build up of attack.

For the top 7 or 8 teams it would be better to have a very defensive and psychical defense with Smalling and Bailly, so that no top striker or attacker can get through it.

At the moment, I really do like seeing Blind being the priority starter at CB... his intelligence and composure seems vital at times, and he's been great so far. Bailly and Smalling seem similar in some ways for their rashness and physicality at times, and I think Blind equals it out if he was there too.

blind looked very good this game, so i think blind and bailly should be our center backs for the rest of the season if they both are fit. but its difficult to see smalling not included after having a very good season.

Play Blind against skillful strikers, his reading of the game is excellent. However, Bailly/Smalling should be the default pairing IMO.

I think it should rotate a fair bit if we get Fonte. We definitely shouldn't burn out Smalling or Bailly.

I don't want us to buy Fonte because it would surely spell the end of Jones' time with us and I still harbor a hope for the guy. But the realistic half of me says that if we are truly attempting to ascend to the highest level of soccer in the world Fonte is a step in the right direction.

Blind and Bailly have a nice balance, Bailly is aggressive and in there fave while Blind reads the game.

Smalling might be a bit too similar to Bailly, have to wait and see.

Let's just play a 3-5-2 with Bailly, Smalling and Blind at the back. Shaw and Tony can move up in to the midfield.

I am hoping Blind has done enough to show Jose that he's competent as a team player. Can be quite resourceful. I hope we keep Jones as well, and get rid of Rojo. Absolute dead weight.

How are people so confident of dropping Smalling? He was one of the best CBs in the league last year. Are we all forgetting how fucking good Smalling was?

I know Bailly has been good but I don't think he should automatically get the nod over Smalling because he's shiny and new.

Blind is also suspect at times, that we saw last year. Though 80% of his games are like today's, where he is top notch. I'm happy for Smalling to come in for either if he's showing he's just as good as he was last year. It's nice to have this problem, mind.

I'm not saying drop him, he has been stellar. But let's not just settle on that and say "he's our starting CB now". It's a case of whether he keeps it up or not. Whilst he plays like this of course he should start, but Smalling was at least as good most of last season, so do we just not let him show that he might be better than Blind or Bailly because they're good enough? We should be flexible to any of the two, but Smalling has shown most that he can be United's starting CB.

Bailly is playing very good at the moment, so it wouldn't be wise to send him off. While Bailly and Smalling can pair together, in my opinion it would be too physical, and without Blind there, it could hurt the build up play to midfield.
