3' Rooney tries to win us a corner but Josh King manages to avoid the ball and it's rolled out for a goal kick. The subsequent Bournemouth attack results in a chance as Shaw miscontrols in the box and Wilson pounces but smashes the ball wide.

8' Both teams have had periods of possession but no major chances either way yet.

11' The ref awards a free kick for United and as the whistle is being blown, Bailly barges into a challenge and gets the ball but leaves King rolling. Nothing given. United still with the ball.

13' Valencia darts down the wing and floats in a beauty to the far post for Ibrahimovic who flies in and takes down two Bournemouth defenders by flying into the challenge. They're all back up and ready to go though.

19' Neither team has been getting good chances at goal yet. Wilson had a chance but he fouled Blind quite clearly in the build up so there was nothing to come from it.

23' Martial cuts inside from the left and tries to curl the ball into the far corner with one of our first shots of the game but his shot is well wide.

26' Rooney forces the first save of the game! Valencia is played through down the wing by Herrera, he pulls the ball back to the edge of the box to Mata who passes to Rooney but his low shot is well held by Boric.

28' Valencia wins our first corner and he's been dangerous down the right so far. Mata swings the ball in but it's straight into the hands of Boruc.

31' The momentum has swung back Bournemouth's way and they're doing more of the attacking now. There's hardly any space for either team to make something happen.

36' King makes the most of another challenge where he isn't touched by Ander Herrera and Marriner doesn't give anything again. It's getting annoying now. Bournemouth also had two players take a tumble in the box while their last free kick was being swung in and there was very little contact there. Come on...

39' MANCHESTER UNITED GOAL MATA SCORES! A MESS AT THE BACK FOR BOURNEMOUTH AS THE DEFENDER FEEDS MATA THROUGH! His initial shot is saved but it ricochets back to him and he sweeps it home from a yard out! NO PROBLEM!

I think he's been pretty good today. Considering most people refuse to accept he can even be useful at CM, I think he's doing a great job.

As a whole defensively we look solid, and I think he's contributing to that.

It hasn't been blistering football as you'd expect for the first fixture away from home, but let's keep it in perspective.. van Gaal's first season we had 13 points after TEN matches. We didn't win a game until his 4th (or 5th?) match in charge. So I'm OK with ugly 3 points in Mou's early days :-) We'll get better!

Last week when vardy tapped in that passback mistake from fellaini they were sucking vardys dick saying how lethal he is and reading the game perfectly. How he knew fellaini was going to make a mistake because that's what good strikers do.

This week the exact same scenario with mata.
It's all luck and no skill, pure fluke from a poor United, free goal etc.

Rooney is a legend. No denying that. But his time to be phased out might be here unless he can show he can perform. I know its first game of season but he is just a weak link at this point. I just wish people would stop shitting on him all the time. He has still scored so many goals for this club.

I don't think you need me to tell you that they're both players with different playstyles and one was preferred in this game over the other. I feel like Carrick would struggle to make an impact against a team thats played so defensively and narrow; Herrera has been running around everywhere and rotating well. Not ideal and I agree that I do prefer Carrick in most situations, but i trust Mourinho is utilizing him to get the most out of Bournemouths defensive frailties

Some thoughts after 45 minutes. Bailly has been class, solid defending and amazing passing. Fellaini plays his role really well this game and might be a good fit besides Pogba. Rooney still looking the same as in the preseason games. Lackluster performance so far but wouldn't be surprised to see him score in the second half like he did against Galatasaray. Overall lucky to be in the lead but at the same time Bournemouth hasn't really created anything so far.

Taking a while to get into the game, started stepping it up in the last 20 but not looking as sharp as we could be - a consequence of our lack of pre-season and international tournaments.

  • Attacks have been more direct than last season, with the tempo a bit quicker and a willingness from the team to play lower percentage balls. We've looked to play early passes forward to spring an attack before Bournemouth can set up at the back, but the quality of the pass has not always been there, and that's also been the case for some simple passes. Players have been willing to move out of position if there's a potential to counter or to try and pull Bournemouth out of position, and it's been good to see how quickly the others will fill in the space left behind in case Bournemouth break.

  • One noticeable part of our attack has been the focus down the right flank. Valencia has done a lot of work on and off the ball, at times being close to the furthest forward player getting on the end of a switch to run at Daniels/Ibe one-on-one. Been noticeable that a number of early crosses have been put in from this side, perhaps to utilise Martial and Ibrahimovic in the box, with Rooney and Fellaini also often popping up. Valencia's done well individually, but it does feel he could do with more support from Mata. The Spaniard at times seems to be covering the right back spot more than working with Valencia on the wing, which could give him an easier time escaping his marker - could just be how Mourinho wants to limit the threat of a counter in behind the full back, although Ibe and Daniels have often both been forced to drop deep, and Bailly has the speed to cover.

  • We've been defending quite narrow as it has been in pre-season, in an attempt to close down space for passes and runs in between the lines. Been noticeable that the full backs have tracked their man inside or stayed in line with the back four at times, with Herrera, Fellaini, Mata and Martial tasked with tracking the wide men when this occurs. Midfield closing down players on the edge of the box well and cutting out shots from distance which has caused us problems in recent seasons, limiting threats and recovering the ball to try to launch counters (although they haven't been too successful).

  • Individually, Bailly and Blind have been reading the game well, with Bailly in particular impressing on his debut - quick to anticipate and strong in the air and tackle. Fellaini has similarly been good in winning the ball back early in midfield and getting opportunities to counter. Attacking players haven't overly impressed generally, with Valencia being the stand out player in this regard.

Classic Mourinho half of football, no real risks, capitalise on opportunities. Positives: Fellaini's looked very solid, Mata's played well, Valencia and Bailly have been our two best players on the pitch so far, Ibra's been dominant in the air. Negatives: Rooney, Martial's been a little quiet except for a couple of nice moments and we haven't looked all that threatening when in possession.

Overall reasonably happy.

Defensively look much more solid than last season, Fellaini is performing very well with Herrera, surprisingly productive midfield pairing.

Valencia just loves Mourinho, Bailly is crazy but I love him, Shaw looks good as per, likewise Blind. Only downside is Rooney playing like absolute shit, and maybe Martial being a bit quiet.

Lucky goal, it's been a scrappy first half for us, Bournemouth have been surprisingly good at keeping the ball at times. As long as we get the 3 points I couldn't care less how we played at this point.

    Not dominating possession is actually good. The more they have the ball the more they get drawn forwards which will create space to be exploited. Unfortunately we have a player at number 10 seemingly incapable of anything dynamic and whose first instinct is to stop and look backwards i.e. the easy option
